Hi Everyone! There has been an interesting thread in the general forum concerning heaven. Soooo ... let's write a song about it. The theme will be Heaven, of course. It could be about how you picture heaven, whether you think you will go there, or if you want to go there, or you could tie the idea into the here and now ... whatever you want or whatever your thoughts about heaven are. It could be funny, respectful, serious, religious or not. Up to you.
The parameters: The main idea of the song can be about something else but the word heaven should appear either in the chorus or in a repeating line in the verses (if you aren't using a chorus.)
The goal of our "Song Challenges" is to write songs/lyrics on demand within set parameters. We don't critique each other's songs in this thread (but you can say you like someone's song if you want to.) Please post your original works. If you have already written a song/lyric that fits within the parameters, please feel free to post it.
Good luck to you and have fun.

I'll jump in first, Jean, but with an 'oldie'. Just happened to have a song called "Heaven" in my archives. It was one of the first lyrics I wrote, so is much longer than I'd dare write now. The atmospheric bedtrack had already been written, and when I heard it, I immediately envisaged a sort of 'film noir' gangster scenario. http://soundcloud.com/user1251525/heavenJay - Vocals & Keys Dave - Original Music, Guitars & Mix Mark - Bass Bill - Lead Guitar John - Drums Donna - Lyrics Heaven(v1) Nicky the Nose can sniff out danger Spot a phony who's on the make Smash the intentions of any stranger A quick once-over is all it takes (v2) Harry the Horse has an eye for the ladies Mainly one type matches his taste Likes her mean, darker than shady Svelte in black leather, a whip at her waist Chorus Grown men and their terrible toys Closer to Heaven when they were still boys They like their cars sleek with body-sized trunks Are easily offended by snitches or drunks An angel in Hell Has their names on his list Written in fire so none can be missed He's watched them from birth As they work to create Their Heaven on earth (v3) Tony the Traveller went too far A secret send-off is what he needs He’s being picked up in the Family car For a short-notice trip to Eternity (v4) Sal and his Caddy are part of the game He rolls to the curb as his eyes start to search Moves to the window to take better aim Knocking the Mother of God from her perch Chorus Grown men and their terrible toys Closer to Heaven when they were still boys Mack and his knife make a pretty sharp pair They'll skin you alive without turning a hair An angel in Hell Has their names on his list Written in fire so none can be missed He's watched them from birth As they work to create Their Heaven on earth (v5) Here comes Louie, thinking Life is so grand Sal in his Caddy does not miss a beat Leans from the window, weapon in his hands Louie does his bullet-dodging dance on the street (v6) They take what they want at the drop of a gun Power and luxury, pleasure and fame Murder and mayhem, some do it for fun Good or evil, to them it’s the same Chorus Grown men and their terrible toys Closer to Heaven when they were still boys No more fedoras or pin-stripe suits But they still know how to make concrete boots An angel in Hell Has their names on his list Written in fire so none can be missed He's watched them from birth As they work to create Their Heaven on earth Copyright: 2008 Donna Devine

Hi Jean!!
I took a look in my little black book Found a couple that would fit I know I have another too I'll have to look for it....
This first one was written back in 2009 when someone (I think it was Midnite Bob but I could be wrong) was looking for a lyric to fit into a play or musical about Jesus if he were alive today. I never offered it as I think that I found out the play's idea or theme wouldn't have fit the lyric, forgive me but I can't remember exactly....anyway
"Don't They Know"[size:8pt] ©2009 Lynn Orloff[/size]
As I walk these city streets With just sandals on my feet Doesn’t seem like much has changed from long ago Seems like people are the same Different faces, different names In a hurry who knows where with all their woes
Don’t they know how much I love them, don’t they know how much I care Can’t they see that I’m the Savior, who descended Heaven’s stairs With a promise and a passion, and a way to set them free If they’d only, if they’d only, if they’d only look at me
I could take away their pain If they’d simply call my name I’m so close and still they cannot see my face If they’d only look my way Say the words they need to say But they hurry back and forth within their maze
Don’t they know how much I love them, don’t they know how much I care Can’t they see that I’m the Savior, who descended Heaven’s stairs With a promise and a passion, and a way to set them free If they’d only, if they’d only, if they’d only speak to me
Bridge Why do they struggle endlessly, when I have what they need I long to come into their hearts, if only they’d believe
Don’t they know how much I love them, don’t they know how much I care Can’t they see that I’m the Savior, who descended Heaven’s stairs With a promise and a passion, and a way to set them free If they’d only, if they’d only, if they’d only trust in me ------------------------ "Mom's Spaghetti" (Children's Song) (c)2012 Lynn Orloff
Nothing’s quite as good as mom’s spaghetti Nothing I can think of that’s for sure When there’s ever some left over I will ask her Mom can I please have another plate full more
Mom’s spaghetti, Mom’s spaghetti It’s like heaven on a plate oh yes oreee Mom’s spaghetti, Mom’s spaghetti Hope there’s still some on the stove waiting for me
Though she likes to make a lot of different dishes And I’m sure she is the best cook in our town There is one meal I could eat Sunday to Sunday Her spaghetti tastes the best when going down
Mom’s spaghetti, Mom’s spaghetti It’s like heaven on a plate oh yes oreee Mom’s spaghetti, Mom’s spaghetti Hope there’s still some on the stove waiting for me
When I hear that pot of water start to boil And I smell tomato sauce dance in the air Well she doesn’t have to call me to the table Cause my hands are washed and I’m already there
Mom’s spaghetti, Mom’s spaghetti It’s like heaven on a plate oh yes oreee Mom’s spaghetti, Mom’s spaghetti Hope there’s still some on the stove waiting for me

Good Evenin' Mz Jeannie B!
My Best-Ever on this Subject's "WHERE THE HELL IS HEAVEN?" (C) 2002, music by Sue Shoshana-Braun, on my "Sessions With Sue" CD at CDBaby.com.... Lyrics are:
I've Been Searchin' a Lifetime Hoped I Was Closer Every Day But Every Time I Thought I Was Near It Prospects Kept Slippin'-Away...(So)
(CHORUS) WHERE THE HELL IS HEAVEN? Where Are The Streets of Gold? WHERE THE HELL IS HEAVEN? & Is It Only For The Old?
I've Been Searching for Completion Look For That Feeling All The Time But Every Step I Thought I Was Closer Led to A Much Longer Climb...So
(CHORUS) WHERE THE HELL IS HEAVEN? Where All The Angels Fly? WHERE THE HELL IS HEAVEN? & Is It Good-Enough-To-Die?
(BRIDGE) I Hear All Men Talk of It Some of Them Whisper It Others Shout Time & Again.. But None Can Explain Just What-It's-Like In That Place Where There Ain't No Rain I'm Hearin' Rainbows I'm Hearin' Happiness I'm Hearin' No Cares At-All But I Wish I Had a Little Better-Description So I'd Have No Reservations & Call...
(CHORUS) So WHERE THE HELL IS HEAVEN? Only A State-of-Mind? WHERE THE HELL IS HEAVEN? Hope Y'Don't Have to Leave This ALL Behind Yeah, WHERE THE HELL IS HEAVEN So Hard to Get There From Here WHERE THE HELL IS HE-A-VEN... Hope God Makes It Perfectly-Clear--

Heaven © words and music by C. Stewart ( March 31, 2012 ) I'm in heaven Cause you're with me We're in heaven And we smile I'm in heaven You're my angel We're in heaven We are one You're wearing my hand painted ring I play guitar and start to sing We're in heaven We're in heaven I'm in heaven Picking flowers We're in heaven So in love I'm in heaven Life is golden We're in heaven Dancing slow As the rest of the world disappears Love is the only sound I hear We're in heaven We're in heaven http://www.soundclick.com/bands/-0/calvinstewart

How's this grab ya? wrote especially for this challenge while on the throne... I Wouldn't Know Heaven If I Stepped In It My folks gave so much they sacrficed their life anything that would help us kids they'd opt to live in strife Mom would cancel that vacation Dad would drive an ole heap to help them pay for my guitar and college wasn't cheap Well, some people wanna know how that place works up above I woudn't know Heaven if I stepped in it but I've known love I have an older brother to whom I looked up to anything that he would try that's what i'd wanna do He'd crush a baseball a country mile i'd crush one half as far but he was always there to save my hyde in the playground or in the bar So, some people wanna know how that place works up above I woudn't know Heaven if I stepped in it but I've known love I've seen plenty of places that look like hell downtown Newark or as my Mom said "my room" and it bores me to tears to see this Evangelist here trying to save me from doom no, no one really knows how that place works up above I woudn't know Heaven if I stepped in it but I've known love

"Angels Cryin Heaven's Rain" (c)2012 Lynn Orloff (needs melody pls)
Lookin' out my window pane Lookin' at the fallin' rain Not all raindrops are the same I've finally come to know
My baby wasn't feelin' well Doctor said that only time would tell And it wasn't long until my baby fell Into the arms of God
What I'm feelin' isn't ordinary pain And this rain ain't ordinary rain Just angel tears fallin' to the ground It took the longest time for me to know There's a rain that falls down soft and slow It's because somebody's soul is heaven bound It's just the angels cryin' heaven's rain
There's the rain that we've all come to know That helps the grass and grain to grow That lets the rivers keep their flow Yeah that's one kind of rain
Then there's tears of joy that the angels shed When a baby's born, or two people wed Or when someone's goin' home again Angels cryin' heaven's rain
What I'm feelin' isn't ordinary pain And this rain ain't ordinary rain Their angel tears fallin' to the ground It took the longest time for me to know There's a rain that falls down soft and slow It's because somebody's soul is heaven bound It's just the angels cryin' heaven's rain
Yeah I'm sittin' here alone, and while I cry my tears of pain It somehow comforts me to know, angels cry down heaven's rain
Cos this pain ain't no ordinary pain And this rain ain't no ordinary rain It's angel tears falling to the ground It took the longest time for me to know There's a rain that falls down soft and slow It's because somebody's soul is heaven bound It's just the angels cryin' heaven's rain

okay, newly written..... “It’s For Certain There’s A Heaven” ©2012 Lynn Orloff(progressive Chorus)(needs melody) Not too many things I’m really sure of Though two and two still equal four And it’s a guarantee my dog will bark When someone knocks at my front door Outside of that well things get murky Who knows just what tomorrow brings And though I do not know the future I’m fully certain of one thing… Yeah I'm certain there’s a heaven, cause the good book tells me so I even made a reservation, took care of that long time ago Oh yeah I'm certain there’s a heaven, where I'll walk the streets of gold There’s alot I am unsure of, but there’s a heaven I just knowJust like the sun sets every evenin' Then peeks it’s head again at dawn I will like clockwork have my coffee Then grab the paper off my lawn And mother nature has her cycles That all repeat a million times But I realize change can happen Since God’s in charge of His designs But it’s for certain there’s a heaven, I feel it deep down in my soul And though I’ve never ever been there, when I get there I'll be home Yes I’m convinced there is a heaven, where angels sing in jubilee Although there’s questions I can’t answer, I know that heaven waits for me!(Although the world may change and rearrange, I know that heaven waits for me)Possible bridge Some people think I'm crazy they ask how can I be so sure I tell them when you know the truth, the truth can't be ignored

ALL THE ABOVE (Kurt Fortmeyer/Luke Robinson) I spent half my lifetime running crazy Dancing to the beat of my own drum But I've been thinking 'bout tomorrow lately And all of the tomorrows yet to come People ask why I follow Jesus I tell them if you really want to know I've got a long list of reasons That Heaven is the place I want to go It's not one single thing I'm thinking of It's all the above I walked in the clouds up in Colorado Thinking 'bout the day I'll get my wings I took a ferry ride in San Francisco But there's another Golden Gate that I'd like to see People ask why I follow Jesus I tell them if you really want to know I've got a long list of reasons That Heaven is the place I want to go It's not one single thing I'm thinking of It's all the above Bathing in the glory of the Master Seeing my baby sister after all these years People ask why I follow Jesus I tell them if you really want to know I've got a long list of reasons That Heaven is the place I want to go It's not one single thing I'm thinking of It's not one single thing I'm thinking of It's all the above It's all the above

Hi Everyone and thanks, Jean for starting this one. Years ago I had cowritten one w/ a very dear friend of mine entitled Heavens Window Pane. Thanks for the opp to share this one. Hope everyone enjoys. You may hear it here >>> http://marilynoakley.com/songs/Heavens%20Window%20Pane.mp3Heaven's Window Pane (c) Marilyn Oakley/Sharon Crews Verse: Dad and I could never agree on anything Leaving wounds for angry words to sting So at sixteen I packed and hit the road Anywhere was better than living at home Build: Tens years later, here I am at his side For a bad heart was taking his life Lost are years we'll never see again But I forgive my dad, 'cause I love him Chorus: When I had looked into daddy's eyes Tears fell like rain Didn't want to say goodbye Have him looking down from Heavens window pane Sorry we had to part Dad, please forgive my heart Never wanted it this way Not have him looking down From Heavens window pane Verse: The link between our hearts broken long ago Father, daughter words spoken, echo in my soul Ten years worth of days, forever gone Hoping to make it up before he moved on Build: I remember when I was at his side When a bad heart was taking his life Lost are those years we'll never see again But I forgive my dad, cause I miss him Chorus: Repeat Bridge: Daddy, my heart's missing you I'm married now, with a child of my own He has asked about Grandpa And I told him about your new home Chorus: Repeat

Aint no taxes in Heaven
1st Verse
Well here it is April 15th again Crops have fallen cause there aint’ been rain Still Uncle Sam wants me to pay my share It’s kinda hard to do when aint nothin’ there
2nd Verse Oh went to buy me 40 dollars of gas Man that ole jeep goes through it fast Bout’ 50 percent of it goes to tax Uncle Sam’s tryin’ to break my back
Chorus Oh thank the Lord there’s no taxes up in heaven, No 20 percent or 15 or even eleven God understands the common man Forgives his debt 70 times 7 Oh thank you Lord Aint no taxes in heaven
God don’t tax you for the work you done He won’t tax you just for having fun He aint anything like Uncle Sam That self-righteous bastard that don’t give a damn
Chorus Oh thank the Lord there’s no taxes up in heaven, No 20 percent or 15 or even eleven God understands the common man Forgives his debt 70 times 7 Oh thank you Lord Aint no taxes in heaven
Tag Think I’ll keep my change and give it to the reverend Oh thank you Lord…. Aint no taxes in Heaven

I'M A LITTLE LATE--BETTER LATE THAN NEVER, WHEN IT COMES TO HEAVEN! REVISED VERSION
DIGGIN’ AT HEAVEN’S DOOR © 2013 Mackie Humphries
V1 Clinton stumbled from the canyon Ragged and parched from the sun He'd been minin’ there for gold again Indians jumped him workin' his claim. He escaped down an old mine shaft And headed across the desert fast With a shovel, gun, and canteen He’ll be pannin’ for gold again.
CH He looked up to Heaven Prayin’, “Thank you Lord For savin’ my scalp”........ “I owe you once more”..... “I know I can’t offer much But one day I’ll score”..... “Wanna stake my claim with you And be diggin’ at heaven’s door.”
BR Clinton wrote out a simple will Surviving his recent ordeal "All gold I find or ever mine Belongs to heaven when I die."
...................SOLO...................
LIFT Ten years passed he strikes the Golden Chord Now Clinton’s riches will work for the Lord.
CH He looked up to Heaven Prayin’, “Thank you Lord For savin’ my scalp”........ “I owe you once more”..... “I know I can’t offer much But one day I’ll score”..... “Wanna stake my claim with you And be diggin’ at heaven’s door.”
OUTRO He’s been gone now since sixty-nine But folks still look up and imagine On a clear dark night Clinton’s still diggin’ Yes, He’s diggin’ for Heaven Diggin' at Heaven's Door…2X (fading)...........
Mackie

Hi Jean, I wrote a song about heaven once, but it was descriptive to my point of view without mentioning heaven but once,( raisin' up and goin' thru that white light or tunnel so they say), so I guess it really doesn't qualify as far as fitting the parameters. I got the words laid down somewhere, I don't save to much of my writing.... I'll try'n find 'em and post 'em. Robert Taylor did me the honors! http://soundclick.com/share.cfm?id=11001162

People talk about heaven too much Like it's a place that they can see Little do they know that heaven's right here And it's what you are to me
I hear choirs of angels When I hear you speak I feel the warmth of love When I feel your kiss upon my cheek
I see the light of eternity Behind your beautiful eyes It beckons me in And I will never blah' blah blah
People talk about heaven too much Like it's a place that they can see Little do they know that heaven's right here And it's what you are to me
that's what I have so far. corny.

(Vs) Son I know how you're feeling I'm feeling the same way I know that you're still reeling from what's happened here today
(Vs) I can't take your pain away when my pain's still so strong but listen to what I say What your mom knew all along
(Ch) She had to leave for heaven's sake to help decorate the pearly gates To help God prepare our mansion where we'll stay. Now don't lose faith for heaven's sake The good Lord doesn't make mistakes We'll all be together again some day She took a journey we all must take We just have to wait...for heaven's sake
(Vs) This morning was the best day I think we've ever had Yea mom always had a way to bring joy when we were sad
(Vs) Remember what she told you when she smiled that big last smile? "Angels here to see me through say they'll make it all worthwhile"
(Ch) I have to leave for heaven's sake to help decorate the pearly gates To help God prepare the mansion where you'll stay Now don't lose faith for heaven's sake The good Lord doesn't make mistakes We'll all be together again some day It is a journey we all must take You just have to wait...for heaven's sake (Bridge) All those months of being sick she still taught us how to laugh never once complaining "it's not fair" Lets cry because we miss her but take comfort in where she's at Someday we're going to see her there
(Ch) She had to leave for heaven's sake to help decorate the pearly gates To help God prepare our mansion where we'll stay. Now don't lose faith for heaven's sake The good Lord doesn't make mistakes We'll all be together again some day She took a journey we all must take We just have to wait...for heaven's sake

I didn't even realize you were still doing these challenges but once I saw this I couldn't help but thinking of some of the popular songs concerning heaven, such as Donovan's "Wear Your Love Like Heaven" and "Heaven's Just a Sin Away" by the Kendalls. Will have to check my archives to see if I have ever come up with one on this subject. If not, I'll try to craft one.
Peace, Brian
