On May 2nd 2013, a legend was laid to rest. A funeral he had with many songs that were done by the best. There were tears all around, from the audience and from the stage. Because that legend was George Jones, and in the center his coffin laid.
Before the funeral concert begun, everyone was let in. All they could see was a picture and his lonesome coffin. Then the lights they went down, Eddie and Keith made the stand. To start off all the tributes to an influental man.
Cause George Jones was a legend, who sang so many good songs. He is now up there with all the best, who, sadly, have all gone.
And then the tributes started, everyone celebrating him. Then it was the turn of Vince Gill for Go Rest High On That Mountain. Oh my god, how Vince cried, when he was singing. And by the end of the song, everyone was crying.
And now that country music will never be the same. Just makes me want to hang my head and bow down in shame. Because there won't be anyone who wants to be in those shoes. But I will surely for one be paying my dues.
I'll say George Jones was a legend, who sang so many good songs. He is now up there with all the best, who, sadly, have all gone.
And now I hope to keep true country music alive. I want to make sure that the memory of George Jones and Co won't die. I want to sing his songs, cause they are some of the best. Cause now he's on that mountain, having a good ol' rest.
Because he has earned it, and yes, I know that fact. The day will come to all of us when we have to pass. But we will never hear that voice again with such beautiful tones. And I write this song in memory of the legend that is George Jones.
And I write this song in memory of the legend that is George Jones.
Note: Wrote this a few days ago after watching Vince Gill singing Go Rest High On That Mountain (he was crying aswell). If you have any ideas for lyric changes, feel free to put them in because I did write it in a short space of time and yes, it goes from the funeral to me, but that's because I hope to keep George's legacy alive (and also how I feel about the way that country music seems to be going)

Awesome song, beautifully written, so much emotion projected throughout the lyrics, it reminds me of the brevity of life.
Nice lyrics and I enjoyed reading them!

Thanks, Summer Rose, and you know, the lyrics may be about a country legend, but they are actually folk song lyrics, because the melody that they are put to sounds like something that Ramblin' Jack Elliott would use (with Woody Guthrie providing harmonies if he were still around)

Will do when it's next on (and if I get told where it's at because the place that usually holds it is booked for the next few weeks).

I read it as a folk song rather than a country number.I like story songs and have written a few,so it's good to read others, albeit about the loss of GJ. Best of luck with it Travis

Folk, country, bluegrass, I have them all on my song folder, Travis. As for my way of writing, it's a case of finding a melody, finding words for it... and NOT writing down dots on a sheet of paper because I cannot read or write tabs. LooknGlass, I know that feeling, as when I heard that GJ had died, I went onto YouTube and searched for Tender Years, put it on, listened to it, and cried, because it was such a surprise, aswell as a reminder that none of us are immortal, and that some day the dude in the cloak with the scythe will come knocking at our door asking for us to follow him (though I'd rather kick him in the butt and become immortal, for anyone who may ask)

I love this tribute to one of my heroes. Lyric wise, I would write in some of his songs. Vic
