This is a quick ditty I wrote this past week which was inspired by my daughter and her passion for organic farming. As a result of her influence, I pulled up our lawn last spring and planted a garden and it's a pretty cool space now.

Well they pulled up the lawn that very first week
And they planted a garden filled with good things to eat
And they weeded and watered and lovingly toiled
Saying prayers for the seeds and singing songs for the soil.

Now the neighbors were startled, upset and annoyed
For their emerald green lawns were their pride and their joy
And it seemed like a crime to destroy the whole thing
For a yard full of dirt and a handful of beans.

And the seeds in the garden quickly sprouted and grew
Like most things when lovingly nurtured will do,
And the people they danced with a joy unrestrained,
Giving thanks to the Earth, and the sun and the rain.

Now the neighbors recovered, they were better than that
They'd just been caught by surprise and didn't know how to act
But they showed up one day with their tools and their gloves
And they offered to help with this labor of love.

Well the harvest time came and their bounty was great
So they invited all their neighbors to come help celebrate
And they danced and they sang as the sun brightly shone
On all the beautiful things that the garden had grown.

Why Bobby,

You're just a "folky," born in the wrong generation! This would make a great story song for little kids in "Bible School," with the great message of God, Earth, & how the neighbors learned a valuable lesson about the foolishness of being pretentious.

Now there's a concept for you for you to create a CD with "valuable lessons" to market to the churches across the country! Who knows?

Nice lyrics--although I think you for the fun of it ought to write another alternate ending version where the neighbors get in to a fight and feud--destroy the garden and the well kept lawn as well!

Tom. Thanks for the listen and the kind words.

Eddie; Funny you should mention "God." I was intentionally trying to avoid the God thing by concentrating more on the elements of earth and weather. This is a better fit for my own brand of spirituality. As for the folky thing, I often feel that I am 50 years too late for the music that seems to spring from my soul.

Mike. Thank you for once again stopping by. So tell me....just what kind of plants are you growing up there in your attic. Sounds sort of suspicious.

Just wanted to clarify that I wasn't implying that your song sounded like a Christian oriented song per se' only that the values and lessons seemed almost "Biblical," in their lesson value from my interpretation. I also more than likely read the line "giving thanks" to imply "God" as well. It's really about perspective and as I re-read your lyrics, I can see that you are stating--"giving thanks to the "earth."

Cool lyrics and unique how you incorporated the "earthly topic" with what I perceived to be a typical suburban neighborhood where everyone feels as though they have to keep their yards as good as their neighbors which is rewarding for many--yet the contrast which you provided is somewhat "enlightening" to what's really more important!

By the way--we're "garden people" at our home!
