Hi! I have a question.I make songs on the piano(well,I've just started) and my piano(digital piano)is really old and I was wondering if I should buy a new one.I don't think my piano(the sounds) are bad,But I'm afraid it's not good.Honestly,to tell you the truth,it is very very poor.I was thinking of buying a Yamaha P-120,120S series because it has a real grand piano sound...sorry,I know my explanation is poor.Anyway,I was wondering,do you think I should buy a new one or keep the old one?and if the piano is poor,Do you think it will it obstruct my songwriting? Thanks!

NO keyboard sounds real, let's get that out of the way!!! Close, yes, but there's no wood and iron plate to transmit waves in keyboards. They don't breathe! They are sterile compared to the real thing. Lecture over!

Ok, for new, which in keyboards I recommend, (notice I said keyboards and not "piano", I would get a weighted, touch sensitive keyboard if you need it for recording as well as writing. IF just for writing, I would get a real acoustic piano. The sound and feel could inspire you more than any good keyboard, (for the "piano" selection on the keyboard). Strings and other sounds can of course also inspire you to write varied styled songs. Depends on what you are into.

I don't know the model number of the Yamaha keyboard I played at a Sam Ash, but it was slender, and had about 10 buttons. It sounded close to the real thing, and had speakers built in, which would be nice for taking out anywhere to play. It only weighs about 30 pounds too. Full 88 keys as well as being nicely weighted.

Get a full metal sustian pedal. It will not only look like a real piano pedal, but most importantly, it will feel much better than those black boxy types.

Korg, Alesis, Roland, Kawai, and the higher priced Kurtzweils are some of the other good ones to consider. Depends on what you want it for. Depends on how many other sounds, as in strings, horns, persuccions, sound affects you are looking for too. Speakers or no speakers. Piano only sounds, or a thousand other sounds. Some writers/players wil have several keyboards, with having one that does not have weighted keys, so the touch is easy, (thought touch sensitive) which that combination is nice for string and horn playing. Some will one keyboard because of the horns. BUT, many keyboards now have a CD Rom slot or whatever it is called, for putting in other sounds that you can buy on a CD Rom. (Steinway recorded piano), which is close to a Steinway in basic wave form, buyt of course missing all the natural waves of each note and room it is in. Yu could get horn CD's and String CD's to make whatever keyboard you get even better.

See if someone at a large music store can walk you through all the options. After hearing everything, sleep on all the info, and let a few days go by, and do the same thing at another store. You'll find yourself getting to know the subtle yet important differences between makes and models. Know your price range, but you might have to be flexible. The decent ones now should last longer and be current for a longer time than what you had.

Happy hunting!

John Daubert,
New Yesterdays

R&B ,it's cool ~~!! i like that very much .maybe you could buy a Roland synth keyboard with a lot of electronic sounds and effect. electric keyboard is expensive here ,and few muisc instrument stores sell synthisizer keyboards. i bought mine from Beijing. only some big cities have nice keyboards.

During KORG ,YAMAHA,ROLAND, Roland is the easiest one to handle .and it has the most popular sound ,too .if you try to make R&B ,pop music ,electronic music,Roland is the best choice .i use Korg n364 because i think its sound and effect processor are very good at playing gothic metal and black metal ,and it has very good dist effect for playing heavy metal ,too .but,it's kinda old now ,i will buy a Korg Karma when i have enough money .and i havn't been to Beijing ,too .i bought my keyboard on ebay ,and the seller is from Beijing.

hehe,i am not studying japanese now ,it's too hard to me.but Chinese can understand japenese writngs well,as it contains a lot of Chinese characters.but i still watching japanese cartoons .i only can understand some simple sentences of japanese. i would like to study japanese again if i have chance ,hehe. Say about Yamaha keybaord... yamaha makes less synthisize keyboard ,but they have a lot of good electric clavier.the most favourate is YAMAHA PSR series electric keyboard. and it's very easy to use . PSR 3000 is very nice ,but it's quite expensive . PSR 740 is the best choice . it's cheaper ,and has nice sounds. maybe you can get it in a very cheap price in Japan .and also , i think KORG keyboards are made in Japan, too ,Japan makes a lot of nice electric music instruments
