Said she was going out shopping, For my brother, daddy and me. Crack caused that reindeer caught in, Santa’s headlight-look in her eyes. She called from the police station, So that she could tell us good-bye. That year we had a dime store Christmas, In the housing project by the bay. A little tinsel and some garland, Sure can go a long, long way. Singing a few old Christmas carols, Pretending we could drive the sleigh. Just us and our dime store Christmas, That was reason enough to celebrate. With momma incarcerated, My daddy fell into the skids. Christmas can feel pretty lonesome, When you’re a latch-key kind of kid. We were always independent, And, Lord knows we grew up too fast. All we needed was two parents, Not ghosts from Christmases past. Repeat Chorus Bridge: Momma was a good woman, And, Daddy was a good man. How they let drugs destroy them, That’s what I don’t understand. Daddy barely coped without Momma, The devil drug him to the gates of Hell. Christmas can be so lonesome, Even when you’re singing Noel. We were always independent, And, Lord knows we grew up too fast. All we needed was two parents, Not ghosts from Christmases past. Repeat Chorus Bridge: Next year will be different, She says things’ll be a whole lot better. She gets out that week, she’ll be home by Christmas Eve. At least that’s what she says in her letter.
