I woke up this morning to Billy Ray Cyrus singing "Love Is Always Sixteen". It reminded me of a song I wrote and posted here (Lyric Board) in April, 2002, titled "Suddenly Sixteen". Of course, the titles are different, the words are different, but the basic premise is the same. Wyman did the music for my lyrics and we paid to have the demo done, and now I feel as though I just have to set it aside and forget it.....if not forever, at least for several years. This is not the first time this has happened. Sunny ------------------ IP: Logged |

Sunny Honey. We all write about the same things. We just say them differant, and hope our way rings more bells than the other blokes. Now if the title was the same, and the story was the same, and some of the lines, and the music was dang close, I would worry. Other than that. Never. Graham ------------------ IP: Logged |

On three different occasions, there have been big hit songs with exactly the same title as songs in our catalog. Two of them went to #1. Faith Hill ("Let Me Let Go")and Rhett Akins ("Don't Get Me Started"). Can't rememeber the other one. We also have a title that is almost identical to Shania's "Oh, Man I Feel Like a Woman." Ours is "Oh, Man, What a Woman." We heard Shania's cut the day after we had a demo made of our song. Such is life. But, don't fret. Time eases the impact of such things. Our Shania-like title was put on hold this year by Lonestar. It didn't get cut, but the fact that it was put on hold was encouraging, and indicates that perhaps the title similarity is no longer a big issue. Back in early 1996 I had a great idea for a song but I thought the song had already been written. I asked the publisher I work with if he had ever heard a song like that. No he said, so I wrote the song. Trying to write something different that will be commerical is very difficult. Sometimes it seems that all of the great songs have already been written. You just have to keep trying. IP: Logged |

About 10-15 years ago I wrote a song. Put it on the shelf for a short time while I decided if it was finished. Next thing I know Whitesnake has a pretty big hit with "The Deeper The Love". The melodies were almost identical, and I wasn;t even a Whitesnake fan! oh well... Mike IP: Logged |

One of the first (Good) songs I wrote wayback in 89 was called "The Grey with Wings upon his feet" Me and the Composer (1999) even won a Song writing contest with it in 2000. In 2001 Tanya Kernigan brought out one that Topped the Charts for a few weeks called "When I ride". Similar enough to be noticable that the one that followed would be credited as a rip off of the first. It is unlikely the writer ever heard mine and even if they had, they are very different. BUT yeah I know just how you feel. ![]() Take heart at least we know we are on the right track IP: Logged |

Happened to me a long time ago. Early in the morning I was listening to the radio, and heard my tune as I cooked some scrambled eggs... Ah, it seems like Yesterday.... ;-) Congrats to Sir Paul on the birth of his new daughter! Yeah, it happens all the time. A few years ago I wrote a song about a guy who speaks no French who meets a woman in New Orleans who speaks no English. About a year later there was a hit country song about the same thing. Some of the lines were even the same. It's just coincidence. There's no way the person who wrote that song ever heard mine, and I certainly didn't hear his. About three weeks ago my wife heard a song on the radio that was recorded back in the 80s, and it was about: A guy who speaks no French who meets a girl in New Orleans who speaks no English!!! Three different songs on the same topic. Neal IP: Logged |

LOL That is way funny BB. I wrote a lyric way back as a bit of a joke for us on lryrics forum when we had a spate of lyrics with a bit of french in them. Was called The Only French I Know Is Fries, and was about a bushie and a french girl. Sat in the files for ages and when The local record bloke suggested h4e could sell a CD of my groty stuff if I made one, I dirtied it up some and it is now on my crass ass souindclick site as Cest La F Word Vei, and charting quite nicely too. Still got the original hook in it even. Not for the faint hearted, or pure of mind though. Graham ------------------ IP: Logged |

Hi Everyone.... Well, it is certainly nice to know I am not alone. I think what bothered me was the money invested in something that has to be set aside until listeners forget that "Billy Ray did that". Musically and even lyrically the songs are quite different. My problem was that we were both putting forth the fact that no matter when you fall in love, you are "Suddenly Sixteen"....or to quote Billy Ray..."Love Is Always Sixteen". I mean, he could have at least picked 17 (LOL) or even 18. But nooooooo.....we're both comparing love to being 16. Or if one of us said..."you are always young when you are in love"....or "a kid again" or whatever. But noooo.....we both have to compare it to being 16! Sigh....such is life. ------------------ IP: Logged |

Earlier this year I posted a song here called "Straight and Narrow Way" which I wrote for my father. About two months ago Lisa Daggs came to our church and performed. I thought about passing the song to her but chickened out. Then I bought her CD and - of course - she had a song titled "Straight and Narrow Way". It was completely different from mine musically and lyrically, but the title......I was bummed. But I'll still push my song. IP: Logged |

Mike! Would you mind posting "YOUR" lyrics to "Whiskey for my horses and Beer for my men"? Pretty please! They surely make more sense then the ones I hear everyday! LOL Mine was "I Stopped Loving Him Today"....had a good reason also.....just had buried him! Don't think that's in the "hit" single is it???? But don't reckon that matters, got the one up now I like better "I'll Love You Past The Day I Die"! I'm sure that's not been written "hit" yet!

Today I had an ask about one on my Roar Radio play list. From a publisher who owns one of the same name, but the artist listed isn't one of the folks doing their take. Hope nobody ever does one called I'm Missing You Like Crazy But My Aim Isw Getting Better before I get that one out there and established. Graham ------------------ IP: Logged |

something similar happened, I showed a song I had wrote to a friend who had been doing it for some time to get what I considered expert opinion; about six months later he came up to me to tell me a new song he was working on that followed a very similar story but was different as a whole, at first I was upset but later viewed it as mine inspired his much like songs I hear inspire me to tell my version of a similar story. quote: IP: Logged |
