Hi there: This is a list of opem mikes. However, I would suggest you call these places to confirm times and dates. I have confirmed some of these but not all. The ones with an * are OK. I've been to those. The others need to be checked and I haven't as yet done that to confirm their listing. Good luck. Hi Fred, Good list of venues there. Do any of these pay perfomers. Are there any venues where an acoustic player could get support to a better known group? I'm gonna try head over to SF in Sept/Oct, try play some gigs over there, if I can get the plane fare from Ireland together! Any info much appreciated http://andrewhandrick.iuma.com [This message has been edited by Handrick (edited 06-27-2002).] IP: Logged |

Hey Holdemfred... could gather this info and the template from the Venue info and post it to the venues board? That would be fantastic, thanks. Jody IP: Logged |

Thanks for the great list! I've been to several of those (will be sure to check out the others too)...I've been particularly impressed by Sweetwater Saloon's, Espresso Garden's and Hotel Utah's. The vibe is really warm at these places -- very supportive audience, very skillful hosts. Something else to note: Bazaar Cafe (in the Thursday list) takes a very purist approach, in that they have no amplification (the room is small and has nice acoustics) and frown heavily on covers, last I checked. Hi ANdrew, OPen Mics do not pay performers,How ever if you send a CD Sampler, or play at the Open mics...then you could possibly get a gig while you are hear! Best ones to play would be ours at JPFOLKS....The Hotel Utah's,El Rio's....then the others...and Of Course let them know you are from out of town and looking for gigs til you leave town!!

I have another for this list. Went to it last night. You are mostly background noise, but the folks who run the joint are friendly and I did sell 3 CDs, so the evening wasn't a total wash. The guy who runs the open mic is named Eric, the woman who owns/runs the venue is Michelle. If you go, tell them Grant from Throwing Toasters told you to come by. The Info Music Open Mic Enjoy! ROCK ON! Grant IP: Logged |

Nice list of open mics in the Bay Area... some I wasn't even aware of. I did notice that you missed the new one at the VooDoo Lounge on Monday nights (which has been duly noted). There are also two more on Wednesday nights. Nickie's, at 460 Haight St (@Fillmore) in SF. 7:30 p.m. sign up. No pay, but you may be able to get a feature set if you can get ahold of one of the regular hosts. Also, the Triangle Lounge down in the Marina does an open mic. You have to get on the email list, though. Contact me if you'd like the contact info for that bryanh718@earthlink.net. The Triangle Lounge is located on Fillmore at Lombard. Nice work )Bryan ------------------ IP: Logged |

quote: I don't know if you are still interested, but in case others are, I have noticed two open mic's that seem to have more added value than others: 1) the Bazaar Cafe is a great place to network with up-and-coming artists and they have a CD listening station where people can hear your music and purchase it right there. So if you have a CD for sale, I would say this place has added value. Plus they won't book you for your own gig there unless you play the open mic first. To get on the list to play, call ahead (anytime) and put yourself in the next available Thurs. night slot. DO NOT PLAN TO PLAY COVERS, PERIOD. And know that you will have an very attentive audience (they kick you out if you are gabbing), plus they wait to make coffee drinks in between your two songs (how cool is that). Once you do get a gig there, people who come to the venue regularly are used to being hit up for tips and you get to keep whatever is put in the jar. 2) Cafe Du Nord has a "Monday nite Hoot" hosted by Eric Shea and promoted as an anti-open mic or "discerning mic" where you gotta impress Eric somehow to get booked. I have noticed that if you can get in on this one, it impresses certain people and can lead to other gigs/openers. http://www.rootsrock.com/hoot2.htm Has anyone here had success with the Freight n Salvage open mic? Also, here is a national directory of house concerts: http://www.houseconcerts.com/o3.html I am really interested in hearing stories from others here about which of these open mics and house concerts have either lead to better gigs or opportunities to sell better-than-usual amounts of CDs. ------------------ [This message has been edited by cc (edited 11-30-2002).] IP: Logged |

quote: I don't know what you mean by success, but i had a great time there this past week. We only all got one song, but I was told I could do two because I wowed them witht he first and i did make about $40 in CD sales! I also got the info to book there and was told I'd be a good opener, so we'll se what pans out. But yes, go, just go early to avoid the traffic, though i got there right at 7:30 and there were only about 12 people there to sign up. That was the first time I'd ever been there though, so I don't know how it is usually! Grant IP: Logged |

I'm going to try and make this tomorrow night! Hope to see some of you there! - Grant The Palo Alto Acoustic Music Open Mic is held on the second and last Thursday of every month at Caffè Verona. Please join us either as a performer or in the audience! Upcoming schedule: Caffè Verona For musicians, singer/songwriters and anyone with an urge to perform! You'll get to play for at least two songs (ten minutes maximum) and occasionally you'll get to play longer, if you wish. We're trying to keep set up times short, so acoustic instruments are preferred. We've got a good P.A. so the audience can hear you. C'mon out and have fun in a relaxed café atmosphere. More information? Easy. info@theopenmic.org Please pass this along if there is anyone you think would be interested. IP: Logged |

hey there - Just wanted to perform a little public service and make sure everyone was aware that the former Hotel Utah Open Mic is (until at least late March when HU is supposed to re-open, i guess) now being hosted by the Independent Community Arts Network (ICAN), 1310 Mission Street (at 9th), directly across from the Guitar Center. Patrick Simms, a fellow AFM #6 musician and compadre that I've run into as a sound guy at the Paradise and an MC at the People in Plazas concerts, is the amiable host. I spoke with him just the other day and he said about 30 people are showing up every time. His email is psstudiosf@aol.com if you have more questions. Have fun! IP: Logged |

Just a friendly update to your great list (thanks Fred). There is a new open mic on Wed. nights in SF at The Park over on 3rd St. near the ballpark. It's brand new so I think you can just drop in. I believe the places listed below no longer do open mics on these nights or at all: Nameless Café & Theatre, Oakland Paradise Lounge peace, IP: Logged |
