I have a contemporary Christian group that is starting to play in other areas. We would like to release a CD to help raise funds to buy equipment. Some of the pieces are public domain while others are not. How do I go about finding out what I need to do to record other people's material so that I'm not infringing on the songwriter’s rights?

Hi TU,

For material that is copyrighted, you'll need to contact the publisher of that material to request a license so that you can record the song (assuming the song has been previously recorded).

I would suggest starting with the following and playing detective by searching the titles databases for the publisher contact information:

1. www.ascap.com
2. www.bmi.com
3. www.sesac.com
4. www.harryfoxagency.com

Good luck.
