Does anyone know about a company called Song Placement. http://www.songplacements.com
They have been contacting me saying that my music would be perfect for a project but they cannot make the submission to their client because I am not a member. (399.99/year fee) Is this their way to recruit new members? Or are they true.
I think they provide similar services like Taxi.
Any comments would be helpful.
Thank you.

Perfect? Great!
Then tell them to wave the fee till after you make that can't miss money from your can't miss song for that can't miss project.
Tell us how that goes.
Otherwise, you should already know that just by what they said puts them in a terrible light.
Do you really think you were the only one to get such a notice?

Hi Johnny,
You are right. I actual did tell them to wave the fee etc.,but they said they couldn't do that, it's not there policy etc.
I eventually told them that I wasn't interested, and they stoped contacting me.
However I was still doubting my self and wanted to post this to see if anyone else out there has had similar experiences with this company.

Al,
All these companies are roughly the same thing. They do submit songs for projects. But all music is based upon personal relationships. I know it would be wonderful if there was an "express lane" mail it in service, where we could all just sit home and let someone else do the work.
But there really isn't. Most people in any form of the industry, publishers, movie people, television, have their own people and contacts, relationships that have been built over years of work, growing up together, working on many projects. The "Mail it in" philosophy just doesn't trump that.
Save money, make trips, get to know people. If there are local film, commerical, television companies in your area, start there. Makes a lot more sense than chasing rainbows.

Well, at least they have a real address.... Song Placements (323) 988-5888 7039 W. Sunset Blvd Hollywood, CA 90028
Perhaps a JPF member could check them out in person ?
Scam ? Not in real terms, but I bet they make more on their membership "dues" than they do on any film placements.
cheers, niteshift

Nite,
None of them are so much "Scams" as they are well intentioned but over promising. They do pitches. They do have contacts. And if you are not in a position to have ANYTHING, what choice do you have? I don't even tell people NOT to do this. If you have some disposable income, want to have a feeling that you are at least in the ball park, and if it makes you work harder on your writing, meet some other people, gain a little discipline, hey, what is the harm?
Actually that is the cool thing about Taxi, the Road Rally where the members meet other people, learn about what is going on and get some face to face time with people that are involved in their careers. That is always a good thing.
All that I say is for people to learn what the reality of all this stuff is. Understand what the people working for you go through.
I talk about what I do through the eyes of Nashville. I make no apologies. Many writers come through here because so much of the business is totally self contained. You write, record, and bring heavy rock songs here, doubtful anything is going to happen because those people don't listen to outside material. Even country is iffy. But if you were to write very solid songs and start to make friends and integrate into the society by writing music with people inside the town, you stand a chance in getting in proximaty of people that can move you to the next level.
If you don't co-write, if you don't get out of your living room or develop personal relationships (even on the Internet) there is not a lot of chances much is going to happen.
These services are all very similar and all have about the same results. Not a lot. But there are those that offer things just the song itself. Taxi is one of those. I don't know about this one, it might have similar services.
That is all I am saying.

Listening to your tunes I see why they're interested in you. Very versatile possibilities for use in films, TV, commercial ads even.
Their success stories don't seem all that impressive.
Have you explored http://www.taxi.com ? Before committing to any organization, at a cost, I'd explore the possibilities.
Some libraries don't require a fee to join. If you're ready to take your product to those markets it's time to study the possibilities and make some decisions.
By the way, someone said Taxi had a money-back guarantee at the end of one year if you're dissatisfied. I don't know. Study.
And keep creating. Very enjoyable stuff.

Hi Everyone,
Sorry I haven’t commented today. I have been away all day!!
Wow! Thank you all so much for your great feedback and comments. They are all so interesting, helpful and eye opening!
Thank you for all the ideas and suggestions. I will definitely explore and check them out.
Over the years I have learned that the music industry is a tough business. Talk is cheap and nothing falls on your lap. You have to go out and get it your self, and this is no exception. This is what I am hearing from all of you.
The only thing we can control is our music, and that should be always the primary focus. Promoting, and marketing your music, takes a lot of hard work, time and money, which can drain your energy and creative juices. So looking for an easy avenue can be very tempting, making you and easy target.
You have all helped me to wakeup and smell the roses!
Thank you all for your time and support.
I will continue to check this thread for comments and to share my future new experiences on this topic.
Ciao for now.....Al
PS: Thank you Gary for checking out my tunes and for your positive feedback.

Greetings Al & Gang:
Welcome to JPF. Thanks for asking for advice. You've already been given some excellent pointers. Bob Cushing provided you with a link to the Music Library Report where you can do free lookups regarding the scadrillion music libraries existing in the US, Canada and all over the world. Not all of them charge to participate... if they approve the stuff you send them. Most are into music only (for film scoring, commercials, etc.) but many also want vocals. Art Munson is the provider of that site and has done a marvelous job of keeping things up to date.
I also checked out one of your numbers and was impressed. Good luck with your music and we hope you will continue to participate in the many facets of JustPlainFolks. It's a great place for anybody connected to music. Hurry back.
Our leader, Brian Austin Whitney has been in the hospital recently or I'm certain he would have issued a personal welcome to you.

Hi Dave,
Thank you for your welcome and your positive comments.
Everyone at JPF is very helpful and friendly. This year we were very fortunate and honored to be nominated for the JPF world album of the year. We drove down (14 hours) to Nashville for the awards weekend and had a blast. We played on the Friday night nominees showcase and the audience was amazing. Met many JPF members including Brian himself. It was a weekend I will never forget.
The link Bob Cushing provided is very interesting and helpful. I am working my way through the various sites. I found the review on "Song Placement" and it wasn't pretty. I am so glad I didn't sign with them.
I checked out your site, and "Wow", you write awesome music and songs. I wish you all the best.
Ciao for now......talk soon.
Al
