Click on first song. This is a rough demo, recorded just to get the song across.

Hi !! This makes me think of the super group, the Statlers. It is like one of their old classics..
good flow, music, and a good storyline..
Keep singing, as you are a fine one for sure! Kimberly

I think this is a pretty good tune and could use a more spirited demo. The current one sort of drags along. You have at least two stories going on here and they sort of compete (cowboy way vs. the evils of smoking), but that's OK.
I enjoyed the listen.

Bill, This is really pretty. That chorus is sweet with the down turn in the first line. Adds to the melancholy nature of the song. And I think that is what you have achieved or are achieving with this song, a sad but appreciative look back at noble but lonely profession. Kind of like songwriting huh?
Speaking of that I wanted to mention that I appreciate your critiquing style. And I agree with you mostly that it drives me nuts too when you see a song posted where little time or craft was involved in it and it gets rave reviews because the person is popular or people are reluctant to be honest.
But I wanted to mention one thing that I have come to understand about myself and other people's music. Sometimes I hear a song posted by someone else that may have significant commercial flaws in it and it would never, ever get cut but it can still have charm, wit, a cool progression, surprising turns or whatever that something is that makes it just good music. And you know what I respect that too.
I just wanted to say that because I really liked the advice you gave to that Telewanger guy about the craft of songwriting all of which I agreed with especially the part on reading every songwriting book you can get your hands on.
Anyway I like that you take this songwriting thing seriously, Tom

Thanks, Tom, I appreciate that alot. I just think that message needs to be said on here every once in awhile. I have to take a hiatus from here from time to time, there is far too much back-slapping going on. Every song is NOT great and it sure does mess up your songwriter mind. Mine, anyway. Write on, Tom, you are talented!

Hi Bill:
I really like this one. The music has a great feel and your vocal is perfect for it. Lyrically, I feel like the story could be tightened some - like Kevin, it felt to me like there were a couple of different story lines.

I had started this challenge of sorts on the General Forum...... here's the link..........
http://www.jpfolks.com/forum/ubbthreads.php?ubb=showflat&Number=794045&page=0#Post794045
and posted these comments over there.....
Hi Duke
Yours is the 2nd song that I have listened to for my challenge --I believe that I have listened to something of yours before though I did not recall the style and other elements - so you fit into my criteria - at least for Me- and though I feel that you DO have a LOT of talent as a writer and a musician -- the song - lyric/ melody combined effort -- does not seem to me to be something that I can sell to my personal audience and Boss......
the musical treatment feels out of genre perhaps.. You do have a real quality voice and the writing has very good qualities independently... playing and mix both quite good.......
only not the one that I can sell to my boss at this time.... but keep working on your catalogue. Best wishes jm

Howdy Duke, I had told you above how much I liked this tune,& now I'm back from listening a bunch more, & snagging a download Thank you. I has taken me a while to figger this out, And you must have heard it before, but your voice, and this music/lyics, capture all the best essences of Ray Price, who is one of my oldtimey heroes for sure........Thanks for sharing......Gus

Well, Gus, actually, no, I have not been told of a resemblance to Ray Price. But that is quite a compliment. I have been told many others, but not him. I don't view myself as a singer. At all. Just a writer who can (hopefully) carry a tune decently. Thanks to you and all the others, I always appreciate it. I have written on this song, for like, five years, haha.

Hi Duke,
Yeah, As I recall, one of the most effective anti-smoking ads involved showing the Marlboro Man (or someone like him) with lung cancer. He did die of cancel too, I think.
The cigarettes steal the focus from the dads life a little, I think...I also became curious if the singer/son was a smoker, like the dad, since the lyric itself seems to be going there in the later verse...
The strings sound a little cheesy, to me, in a song about a dad who liked the 'cowboy way'...maybe trade 'em in for a mandolin or a fiddle, in a future demo!
It's a tad sentimental, but a good song, I like what you did here, for the most part.
Mike
