This song was on the lyric board. Here is an almost finished version with music. All comments welcome! I’m Not in Charge Any More Copyright ©2014 Colin Ward V1 Well I’m hanging onto dreamland, Although someone wants me up, I was working ‘til the wee hours, That means nothing to a pup So I try rolling over, Thinking she might go away, But I really should know better, So I start another day V2 Now I’m sitting at the table, With a coffee in my hand, Thinking ‘bout the show last night, I played with my band Big eyes and a cold nose, Tell me all I need to know, It’s time for walking down the street, Because she’s got to go Chorus I’m not in charge any more, Someone tells me what to do, Where to be, when to go, Who to see, can’t say no, I’m not in charge any more V3 Now her bowl is empty, And I see those big sad eyes, So I drop what I was doing And look for her supplies, But the dog food bag is all used up, So I head out to the store, And she stares out the window, ‘til I come back home with more Chorus Bridge Now it feels like nap time, I could really use a rest, But it’s hard to get much sleep, With twenty pounds upon my chest So we head down to the dog park, Wear her out, make her run, But she won’t bring back her ball, So, I have all the fun Chorus

Hi, Colin...
What I want to know is, what kind of guitar are you playin'? So the song has potential. Our dog song was One Look. Didn't get too much review action. And I didn't think it was all that great til I'd heard it about ten times. Now, I think it's great. So...let it marinate a bit and think about a bigger production. I thought it was admirable and smart you didn't give a name...

Hi Diff,
It's an old Guild D45 from the seventies. Left channel fingers, right channel pick.
Yes, I will let it sit while I decide where to go with it. I like to get feedback early though so I don't have major stuff to change if someone gives me a great idea.

pretty nice sound and I always like the handclaps effect! I would add a fiddle and/or mando (or ukulele!), a bass, some extra vocals and it's done!
Good one.

Now that's a subject matter one would not expect and you IMO did very well with it. I most assuredly wouldn't put it on the back, or middle burner. It did cause me some conflict because irrespective of all the hassles our dog (and previous ones over 34 years of marriage) are worth it all....perhaps because we pretend to be in charge :-)

J & B,
Yes, it is all worth it! (except when she is barking at a possum in the back yard under the neighbor's window at 3am)

Hey Logan County Mate!
What a fun song--this would make a great song for a comedic video! Enjoyed the uplifting music vibe. My only sug would be have the last line read "she has all the fun," which kind of put's you as the song suggests, "2nd fiddle."
Nice creative write here Colin!

This is great Colin. I like the bass runs a lot! No nits except one...I wish the hand claps were better. Maybe a few more of them or throw some delay on them.
Minor issue though...nice song!

Colin, well you have officially entered the "in love with the pup" phase. I know the feeling I enjoyed this a great deal, the music, the feel, the vocal, the story, the only tiny nit I see is I feel maybe in the bridge we need to have one or two lines telling us the reason why you put up with the little aggravations and inconveniences that a dog can cause- because as it is, it sounds more like you are only saying you are being whipped by the dog, not in charge and doing a little bit of pardon my pun, "b*tching about it all" Kimberly

Kim,
Thanks for the suggestion. I will mull that over. Since it is all tongue in cheek, I am not sure if that is necessary or not.....

Here is the latest mix. I think I will add a little subtle fiddle but otherwise, about finished. All comments welcome! Cute song, Colin. A good grouping of instruments for the song.
The bass is especially nice. And the vocals are well recorded.

Hi Colin,
There I was listening to the first verse thinking "he's speaking about a younger lover, no, a daughter". "Pup" kinda threw me, but I could imagine myself calling a young human a "pup". "Cold nose" finally brought home the truth.
After that I settled back and enjoyed the song.
No complaints.
Later, Stan

The fiddle mixes in just right with the mando and banjo. Nice mix of instruments and a well sung tune. Like it all, it is a well done tune through and through! Again, I like those hand claps, too. The ending where the instruments drop out and then come back is a nice touch.
