Received this email in response to song lyrics I sent this company recently thru their website www.ncarecordings.com
Do you feel this is legit?
The two main gentleman appear to be Troy Martin & Eric Zanetis.
Looking forward to your replies.

Thanks,
Larry Westfall

Dear Mr. Westfall,

I appreciate you sending your song words to WHAT WOULD IT TAKE and FATE MET DESTINY. I put them before our Board of Review and they received excellent reviews.

FATE MET DESTINY is such a sad story, but I feel that it is a story that a lot of people can really relate to - a boy and a girl, her father disapproving and calling out the law - only to end with tragedy. Very heartbreaking and reminicent of an older-style of country song that we all wish there were more of today.

WHAT WOULD IT TAKE could be taken many ways by whomever is listening. To me it meant that they could be already married to other people, but most of our Board felt that it was two people in today's world not knowing how to committ to another - scared to take the chance - but the love is there.

We would very much like to set both to professional music and create high-quality recordings, publish the songs and let people hear them. That includes established recording artists who are always looking for their next hit song. We have a track record of finding hit songs for artists (you might have noticed from our website at www.ncarecordings.com).

We do not pay for everything with a new songwriter, but almost everything. We ask the songwriter to contribute $300 each song towards the cost, never another cent, towards the recordings and you also receive publishing and our company working with you.

It happens that we have a major promotional campaign and album called THE HEART OF COUNTRY MUSIC being prepared right now which, in additional to our recording your songs, we will automatically ship them to 60 established artists and their managers and producers, 260 broadcast radio stations, 60 internet stations and trade publications for reviews, etc.

We ask the songwriters to contribute $490 each song for this project, but you get the immediate benefit of a big summer promotional campaign, plus the professional recordings at no additional cost.

Sorry to be so long winded, but I wanted to let you know what we were doing and that we believe in your songs. I have attached two agreements for you to choose from. I apologize in advance if I have confused you. Please call me if you have any questions.

Richard C. Woodsome
NCA MUSIC
615-754-7055

P.S. Regarding the promotional album, you may choose to have one or both songs on the album and campaign, but please do not wait until the last week to reserve a space because the album is limited to 10 songs. RW

in2piano,

Nice to see you posting on the Mentor Forum.

To cowrite with you, they want all the publishing, then they charge you $300 per song for the demos, then in order to pitch the demos, they want $190 per song (total of $490) to put it on a compilation. That doesn't sound like a good deal to me. If my publisher wants me to pay for a demo on a song I wrote all by myself, that's ok, as long as I decide where and by whom the demo will be recorded, and then I'll own the demo completely, he can just pitch it. If you're looking for cowriters, then that's all you need.

Most "we'll put your songs to music" services are really selling demos and other services. That's not illegal, but you end up buying a demo service you weren't looking for and tying your song up with a publisher service you weren't looking for.

Now, I don't know NCA MUSIC, for all I know they may be a successful publisher who has done well for their clients. But even if that's the case, unless you are looking for a publisher, demo producer, song compilation service, and cowriting service, then it's not worth it. You're buying more than you need. You can find a good cowriter by networking on the internet, you can buy a demo for $300 more or less without giving away your publishing, you can pitch those demos to a publisher, and you can get songs your record and own the publishing for on compilations...all separately but still own your own publishing.

I hope that more will chime in on this one. I have been talking with him about this and wanted him to start this thread to get more opinions than just mine. Alot of you on here would have at least a gut feeling about all of this. That's what so great about this community. You have an issue that you haven't run up against, but others have and they share their experiences with the newbies. It has always been so much help to me...I know that. So what do you all feel on this one, then?

I checked out their site, I can't read half of what is there. I believe this is the same company that I had an email from, trying to get me to send in lyrics, I ignored them. I figured they were just a demo shop looking for business, but it seem like they are more, a publisher that wants the publishing, and a compilation PR company. Mam they are the whole thing, with a fee for each service. If it was me that they were pitching this to, I'd say no. You may have great song or the worst in the world, but they are going to say they are great, cause they want your business. There are demo studios that will put a tune to your songs for free, especially if you can just sing it on a tape with or without music, they will charge you for the demo only, and the song will be 100% your, no publishing ties.

I'd say no, but then it's not my money. They may be a good demo studio but I don't like their approach to getting business. This is MHO. Take it for what it is worth.

Thanks for the comments guys (and lady).
Apparently the waters of the music business have more than their fair share of sharks.

in2piano,

It's like buying a used car. You've got to kick the tires and shake the wires. And, a good salesman can get you paying more for stuff you didn't want. Say, listen to that stereo! It's a 1200 watt amp with woofers, mid range, and a special tweeter that can kill fish. And, my don't you look nice in that all leather interior with the hardwood dash...did you notice that the AC can be set so that your exposed skin will be cooled within .0003 of a celcius degree? Just sign here and we can put you in this baby today, and we'll pitch your songs too!

The key to the music business is focus. Set a goal. Create a plan, on paper. Assemble a team of advisers. Make all your actions focus on your goal. If they are not focusing toward your goal, for example, if you are signing away your half of the publishing to your cowriter...for nothing...then don't do it.

Do a search here for "team" and "advisers" (you might include "advisors" since I don't always spel so gud) and you'll find a lot of info and tactics on how to build a good music biz team.

Good luck. God Bless. Write if you need some bass playing.

Mike

Thanks Marc.
The problem with rose-colored glasses is they only work for Elton John.

Hi Marc,

They have been after me for a few years now to put music to my lyrics, or redo the music to ones I have done. I won't be sending anything there. You have some good advice here. Either find a good co-writer or find a studio that will help put good music to your lyric.

Have a goodun,

here's a link from a year or so ago here...

http://www.jpfolks.com/forum/ubbthr.../1?sess=30da02931b9a5b2b7ea15cb5fc17e4d4

this is not the first time this guy has been discussed on here, he apparently learned these tricks from his father and continues to bottom fish for songwriter $$
all they seem to want is the demo $$ the publishing thing is so writers will get stars in their eyes and fork over the $$ let's see 10 songs $490 each, $4900 to the studio with minimal cost to
crank 'em out, probably can do a cd comp a week easy...
run for the hills...
there are many writers here who will be glad to collaborate with you if your work fits their styles, that will help get the song written, then there are
many many well qualified demo folks here too...
Mike or Marc would do a fine job on your country stuff
Sub is a killer too, these are A-list players right here in front of you who have written, toured, recorded etc. with a virtual who's who in many genre's...
feel free to pm me if you need help to weed through the process...avoid Zanetis if you like to spend your hard earned $$ wisely...
be well...

I think anyone asking 100% of the publishing royalties is asking too much. It leaves you with nothing to market to other publishers, possibly ever, depending on whether there's a reversion clause where their right to the publishing reverts to you, ending the contract with them. Agreeing to surrender any percentage without a reversion timetable will take a share of the royalties whether they do anything or not to get the song to market. When you succeed, if you do, they get a share for doing nothing.

Another question is whether anyone listens to compilations when they get them. And of course, it's all a matter of trust as to whether they actually send the compilation out to anyone.

They've made a profit whether you ever do.

There will always be another song to be written. Someone will write it. Why not you? www.garyeandrews.com

Not sure why this old girl got 'bumped' but I have learned so much since I decided to do this...Marc, Moker, and Gary...I have learned so much since this old post reared up...you guys saved me from something that basically is nothin more than "vanity publishing".
