Here's the cover of Sara Evans' song, "No Place That Far", that Diana and I did. Love that sweet voice!

I'm pretending I know what I'm doing on the guitar.

Thank you for listening and for any comments you might have!

No Place That Far

I can't imagine, any greater fear
Than waking up, without you here,
And though the sun, would still shine on,
My whole world, would all be gone,
But not for long,

If I had to run, if I had to crawl
If I had to swim a hundred rivers, just to climb a thousand walls,
Always know that I would find a way, to get to where you are,
There's no place that far

It wouldn't matter why we're apart,
Lonely miles or two stubborn hearts
Nothing short of God above
Could turn me away from your love
I need you that much

If I had to run, if I had to crawl
If I had to swim a hundred rivers, just to climb a thousand walls,
Always know that I would find a way, to get to where you are,
There's no place that far

If I had to run, if I had to crawl
If I had to swim a hundred rivers, just to climb a thousand walls,
Always know that I would find a way, to get to where you are,
There's no place that far

Baby there's no place that far

Hi Al,

If I hadn't listened to Sara's verion of this so many times, I would really like this but her version, with all the power in her vocals spoiled me for anything else. I think the song really calls out for that type of vacals and the laid back feel didn't do it for me. As always, the pickin' was great.

John,

Thanks for stopping in and commenting. We appreciate it!

When we did this, we sat out intentionally to not try to copy Sara. We wanted "our" version. It's just another approach to the song. Some folks will like something closer to the original. But that's OK! We just wanted to do our thing with it.

We appreciate your comments and your time to listen! Thanks a bunch!

Hi Al I cannot recall hearing the original so can only comment on this version......I like this version but am not totally convinced it is quite the right style and arrangement for this song....I imagine it more with a jazz arrangement than traditional country. I hear it as a laid back acoustic jazz orchestra type song or as a soul band type number.... think Aretha. Diana has a great voice and puts in a very good performance but I would redo the vocals at the keychange at 2.40 it does not really work for me there as the lift loses its effect. I think it needs a slighly diff rise in melody there just prior to the keychange with more emphasis to let us know it is coming...perhaps a pause would help it build.
Great song though just needs a few tweaks.....I am sure the country fans will love it.

Hey Al....the guitar is good...maybe it me or my speakers but it seems to be panned far to the left...that sounds "funny" to me....now this could be my old ears....lol....I would turn the volume down on the guitar part some also.....

The vocal is good....I don't hear this as Country....but in some spots I do.....no I haven't been drinking...lol....I think I hear Diana holding back some....I think she needs to let it rip and really soar.....

I read Big Jim comments....and have to say I agree, with him...

You always run in to the problem of a comparison between the original and the version you do....I don't know the original version, so for the most part I like this version....

Hope some of this is helpful....take care my friend....Bob

Big Jim...

Thanks a bunch for the listen and the comments. It was a #1 Country hit last year. So, we decided to keep it pretty much Country/Country-Pop. But you are right...a new production in Acoustic jazz would be a real nice. we might look into that later.

We debated about the key modulation...make it dynamic or make it fluid. Obviously, we went with fluid. Since it is such a pretty song, Diana thought her voice would just glide into the the two half-step modulation, which it did, making it more a seamless transition, which it did. However, a dynamic rise there would work, too.

Thanks so much for the observations and for passing them! We have taken notes! Always a pleasure to hear from you, Jim! Thanks again!

Mr. T-Bob!

How are ya, my friend??? Hope you and Terri are both doing well.

Thanks for the listen and your comments. Always good to get input from a great talent! And that ain't no lie!

The guitar is panned 80% left. We're not going to be redoing this one, but your point is well taken. We just threw this one up on her site until we get a couple of more original pieces finished...working on three of them right now!

It was a #1 Country hit last year. It's more Country-Pop than straight Contemporary Country. Perhaps the pedal steel and the fiddle need to be more prominent to better define the genre.

The day after Diana sang this, she got real sick and went to the doctor. She had Strep throat!..still trying to get over it! So, here vocal might not be as strong as usual. However, she does have a rather soft voice.

We were a little hesitant to post a cover for the very reason you mention...the comparison to the original will almost always play into the listener's mind and possibly skew their listening experience. But, we don't have an original ready...the strep throat is really kicking her butt... and we didn't want to long of a lapse between new entries on her page. So, we put this one up. We may reconsider posting covers on her site in the future...it's a topic of discussion!

Thanks Bob! All the best to you and Terri!

This is a good barometer of how out of touch I have been this past year. I don't know if I've heard Sarah Evan's version. It must have been a worse year for me than I thought, LOL. I usually know all the top country songs. But music has taken a seat way back in the bus this past year for me.
So I can't compare this to Sarah's version. But Sarah Evan's is an incredible singer so I wouldn't try to copy her either. Smart move Alan.

I love anything done Country and I think this one is done well. I'd agree with Bob on the guitar being panned hard left. I'd move it a little closer to center, but still keep it left. It'll get louder tho so you might need to back the volume down a little but not too much because the playing was really good and adds to the song. I'd like to see what you would do with my song Job Had It Easy.

There was a few spots than I thought might be done with a little more power but over all it was really well done. Perhaps punch it up a little on the last chorus.

But here is where I almost turned it off
Quote
It wouldn't matter why we're apart,
Lonely miles or two stubborn hearts
Nothing short of God above
Could turn me away from your love

And it has nothing to do with your version or Diana's vocals.
For 5 years I have heard these two rhyme couplets blasted by every critic, publisher, plugger, teacher, and the folks on this very forum, and anyone else in the business. Been told and seen it be told to every writer to NEVER use these in a song. That it is amateurish and lazy writing.
YET... here they (Heart/Apart Love/Above) are in a number one country hit.
And one of my favorite people has decided to cover it and thinks it a good song.
This is the kind of thing that has made me decide to not pitch anymore, to only write for myself.

On the other hand I have to agree with you Alan. It is a very pretty song.

One last question Alan. How are you doing the other instruments, Drums, Keys, etc?

Hey Bill!

Man, two crits form you in about 3 weeks...I feel special! Glad you dropped in with your comments. Please feel to do so anytime!

I agree with you about those couplets you mentioned. But, you know what they say...once you "make it", you can write by your own rules! It's just we outsiders who have to play close to the rules! I've come to expect it and quit fretting about it...it's the ugly side of the beast called Country Music!

Obviously we weren't going to change the lyric to a #1 song! But, we do empathize with you!

The extreme left panning of the guitar is my laziness! I recorded the guitar track on my computer with Vista, rather than the one with XP. My Vista setup records only to the left channel...it will not record on the right channel at all. had it looked at by two techies with better skills than mine. Both said it was indigenous to the sound software and there's nothing they can do about it! And when I try to pan it right in the mixer, it just fades rather than pans! I was too lazy to go downstairs and use the XP laptop! I know better now!

As far as the backing tracks...it has more combinations than a sampler tray at your favorite restaurant! there is some original work by me (lead and rhythm guitar, and keys), I stripped the drums form one backing track and put them with the other instruments (pedal steel and fiddle) from a different backing track and voila! The strings are a proprietary loop from my software.

Glad you liked it Bill! Hope you and Sylvia are fine. All the best!

Two crits in 3 weeks? You all deserve more from me after all the help you have given me over the years.
Considering the year I've had I had to work myself up to it, LOL.

Between the mess with my farm in Michigan and my Brother passing away I was ready to cash it all in by the end of the year. I am trying to get myself back to normal (whatever that is) and writing and playing again.
We just signed with a realtor to do a short sale. It will pretty much wipe us out but we will survive.
I still have a roof over my head and food on the table. AND A PLACE TO PLAY AND RECORD MUSIC. The Man Cave is done and all the equipment is set up and ready to go. I have a Nashville custom Telecaster ready for you to play if you ever get down this way.

I know what you mean about VISTA. I had it on my PC and I uninstalled it and went back to XP. Much happier now.

Bill,

Well, with the short sale, you might not get what you wanted for the farm in Michigan, but at least you're out from under the monthly check to the mortgage company. One payment than than two! Short sales can get messy, though. Hope your lender on the farm is decent with you.

Yes, you had a really tough years. Hopefully this one will be a hell of a lot better.

I'm gonna go up and check out your song. All the best! BTW....my guitar of choice is almost always a Tele!
