THE NIGHT THE RIVER CAME IN

c2018 Brian Beecher

The water would rise to unprecedented heights
As people would carry their loads
Before long the folks there would recognize
Where they’ve hit the end of the road

The storm’s energy moved in unexpectedly
Said it will leave much later tonight
But before it does it will greatly destruct
Much of everything that’s in sight

The desire to make new connections unfolds
As the waters continue to swirl
Imagine a place in peril reaching its arms
Out there to engage with the world

Extending their hands to someone new today
And spark up a new helping hand
They spend lots of time in getting things done
As the flood waters ravaged their land

They would make new choices about work as well
When the water moved up with great speed
They’d choose to feel good and see how the world shifts
To accommodate in a time of need

Seems as though it takes a great tragedy
For to know where our neighbors have been
And so many strangers became best of friends
On the night when the river came in
