Well.....I learned something really useful---My first demo Treva's Got a Secret was rejected by the publishing co. because it had a name in the title--they said it would be too hard to place and that the song had to be more universal eventhough there were songs with names in the title that made it-- learn something everyday!!!!

Hey Tim...
Not to worry...many well-known and successful songwriter's have had many rejections. I have a special file where I keep all mine...lol. Just keep writing...never know when fate might lend a hand.

Hi Tim:
Sorry about the rejection. Consider it part of the process... and believe me, it is an uphill struggle. Creativity is a gift and there is a "buyer" for every product or commodity. You will hear many "excuses" but look for the positives you may be able to glean from each experience. Eventually, it will happen. Until then, plunge on... please yourself first and others will follow.
Best wishes,
Dave

HiDee Brother Tim!
I long ago recorded "Door 26"...about the 25 TIMES Theodore Geisel got dumped-on before his FIRST "Dr Suess" Book got Published.
Rejection only slows-down what's gonna be a Biggie, IF ya keep on Pluggin'-Away, Amigo.
&, sooner or later, ya GET that Break...IF ya don't let the Many Doses of "No" overcome your Ability to Keep On Creating..& Pluggin'-Away.
"Living Well" IS the Best Revenge....so take Wifey out to a Good Restaurant...Pen that Next One...& Hang In There...
Good Luck..& Enjoy The Trip...(There are LOTS of Other Publishers, don't forget!)

I checked with Peggy Sue and Suzanne (For the Benefit of Mr. Kite), to discuss songs with names in the name. Eleanor Rigby was definitely in favor, but when I said Help me Rhonda, there was no doubt. We met in Alice's Restaurant and our waitress Gloria sent Cecilia over to talk to us. A younger girl named Dear Avery was at the next table and assured times had not changed. Since Jenny Was a Friend of Mine, we asked her opinion too. Julia also pitched in, and of course Jolene was our buss girl and she loved the idea. Jack and Diane were the last ones to contribute their ideas, except for Sally who was laying down the whole time.
So we all concluded that your publisher is a self-centered twit who doesn't know anything. Tim McGraw said try not to be hard on her because she just hasn't studied the history. We all agreed that it was Mary Jane's Last Dance.

You must have pitched it to a tv/film publisher. That's a whole different ballgame than the artist circuit.
If the target for the song is placements in tv/film/commercials ect., lyrics has to be very universal and can't contain specifics like names, places ect. unless the tv show /film is about that (which is quite unlikely).

Hmm that's interesting, but what did Fanny ,Miss Molly, Rosanna, Molina, Susie Q, Sara, Norma Jean and Angie think? Not to mention Jim, Leroy Brown, Rocky Raccoon, Jessie, Lena, Lea, Danny, Daniel, Lido, Lady Madonna and to many others to name...

Absolutely.
Not that I know anything about it.
But with a new title they may at least listen to it.
Good lock with it...

The man with bait in the water is the man who catches fish.
Just cause the bait worked on the fish last fall doesn't mean it will this fall.
Using a name like Treva (I've never met a girl named Treva in my 61 years) really narrows down your chance for familiarity. Name songs used to be popular, they haven't been for a long time ( "Tim McGraw isn't a "name" song, it's a "personality" song, and other than that and "Clancy's Bar" or whatever the name of that Toby Keith song was, I can't think of one name song in the last five or six years...uh...make that ten or so, maybe fifteen).
Tim, was the publisher a Nashville publisher, a New York publisher, London, L.A., Austin, Beijing? Did you find out what kind of songs they were looking for? More importantly, did you find out what cuts they got last year? Did your team think that particular publisher was a good fit for you? Do you have a team? Just some thoughts.
Keep at it. An old friend of mine who had hit songs in the early 50's and wrote for major television shows had enough rejection letters to fill a file cabinet. He was a true pro.
If you ain't breaking lots of line and losing lots of lures, you ain't catching fish.

First you have to have a great song to pitch......that is probably stating the obvious but a lot of folk forget that first very important point. Second the people you pitch to have to be in the market. Third the exact criteria of what they are looking for has to be met. Fourth your song has to be better than all the other songs countless others are pitching. But most important the folk you are pitching to have to know you..respect you... and will actually listen to this wonderful song with a view to cutting it. If any of these point are not met then rejections is almost certain. The last point.... even if all these things are covered the fickle nature of the business is against you. It is a numbers game...the more songs you submit and the more people you submit to the better chance you have...but that said you have to do your homework and submit the right material to the right people at the right time and know that they will listen to it before throwing it in the trash.

Hey Tim,
Is this your first rejection ? Congatulations ! You are now on the first step to recieving at least 99 more before anything will begin to happen to your song.
You could shorten the odds by writing 9 more and pitching them also........ and bsides, it's a long time between musical drinks, so just keep writing and ignore the talentless hacks who will try to judge you.
Write on !
cheers, niteshift
PS - you are now a certified songwriter. Either that, or certifiable.

If you ain't breaking lots of line and losing lots of lures, you ain't catching fish.
And as most fishermen will readily admit, the cost of the line, the lures, the boat and the fuel usually far outstrips the value of the fish you catch - it is the experience that brings us back.
