Hi,
technically I live in Seattle, but find myself about to move to Phoenix for various reasons. I started checking out local open mic opportunities. I will post my findings here. I got the addresses from AZopenmic.com if you want to go & look for yourself.
----------------------------
The Coffee Bean and Tea Leaf 4740 E Shea blvd. NW corner of Tatum & Shea SAT 6:30p-9p Hosted by Larry Jensen. nice place, well lit, although people walk by in front of you to get to the counter. Larry is a great guy & very supportive. The PA is good - no bands. The day I went there were comedians as well as quite a few acoustics. 2 to 3 songs each and more if time permits.
---------------------------
Gino's Homestyle 13623 N 32nd St - SE corner 32nd St & Thunderbird THU 8:30p-MID Jack Couchman a little cramped, a little dark (great for those with stage fright), sound system is alright (Jack is a professional and brings in a couple of good JBL speakers and a PA with a dozen plugs), lots of regulars, 3 songs each to start. one of the best things is that there was a really good fiddle/mandolin/banjo player that will jam along with you if you want him to. not room for a band. they had a nice fire pit out front in the smoking section. Jack hosts more than one open mic in the area and seems to be a great guy.
I will post again when I check out more.

Ok, I now live on the west side of the valley. I think the Gino's one went south a mile or two and is at Playa - 32nd street and Shea.
on the west there's one at Tim Finnegans just south of Metrocenter on Wednesday evening at around 9pm. the guy has a good PA and will lend his guitar if he trusts you. Mostly younger crowd.
in central Phoenix there is Fiddlers dream coffee house. every thursday - signup is 6:30 playing starts at 7:30 - acoustic only - they do not allow amplification - but its the right size for it - feels like playing in a grade school classroom, but the audience is almost all musicians. $3 or 3 cans of food. there is a piano to use.

I forgot to say that the fiddlers dream is on 17th street and Glendale in the Quakers meeting place.

"If someone is truly a jerk, or truly is not deserving of any positive reply from you, polite indifference is the best response you can give. Do not insult. Do not slam. Do not follow the urge to be nasty. Simply be politely indifferent." –Brian Austin Whitney
