I'll be ordering these samples later today. I hope I'm making a wise choice.
On the Logic forum, I've been reassured that these bundles will work well in Logic Pro 8. Any last minute thoughts from the techies here will be appreciated.
1.EastWest Symphonic Orchestra Sample Collection Software - Gold Complete ($445)
2.Native Instruments Akoustik Piano: Sample Based Acoustic Piano ($199)
Best, John

Glad you made a good choice. NOW GET USING THEM. Looking forward to hearing some new stuff produced with these great products and thanks for the interesting thread discussing your thought process whilst choosing the new setup.

Hi John,
Can't advice you on taste. But I think the East West stuff is really great. I've been looking at NI's piano as well, and it is very hard to find great piano samples out there, so that is probably one of the best, though many piano players seem to prefer pianoteq http://www.pianoteq.com/ . But there are 4-5 big players on that market, and choosing is more a question of sound preference, than other things.
As your options now to play with different sounds are limited only by your imagination, you might want to consider getting a versatile platform like Kontakt 3 from NI. It's pretty much the industry standard, very versatile, and Gary Garritan who used to work for Tascam on their discontinued film industry standard GigaStudio, now works for NI on the Kontakt stuff.

Big Jim, my piano samples should be here by Saturday. I got a notice that the East West samples won't be shipped till the 21st.
I need the time anyway to work in Logic Pro. I have the basics down, but need more practice in the mixing stage.
Some good sounds build into Logic Pro. Crappy strings though.
Magne, I'll definitely consider the Kontakt 3 bundle - looks good.
Best, John

I take the "crappy" string comment back. Some of the synth strings are very good!
This DAW is AWESOME!!! I can't wait for the samples. Layering the strings with different samples, panned opposite adds a whole new dimension to my string orchestrations.
So far everything couldn't be working better. I'm totally mind-boggled with Logic Pro 8!
Best, John

Best of luck John. Even crappy strings can sound great if they are LOVINGLY edited properly. LOL

As John knows, I'm also looking for better samples/sounds. I found this interesting site:
