Hi Scott ! I am SO glad that you like it (although you are so nice, you'd probably be graciously sweet even if I posted dog dewdy!) I tried to make it conversational and match the words with the music to the best of my ability...did you like the little "march of a champion"? the intro and outro? -----------------------------------------------------------------
Joice and Ricki, nice simple solid versions...Wendy had that "off the beaten path" feel, that was coolly simple....and Big Jim...Well I have to tell you, I smiled the instant I heard the opening chords and didn't stop....you are REALLY much more talented than I thought...I have now listened to you on ourstage and nowhere man and this...you are my official "across the big pond" brother ! ! This has been a fun experience !

Herbie,
Wish I could play guitar like you. This was way cool. Now I'm gonna go listen to Big Jim!
Mark - I listened to yours too. Great power ballad version.
It's so much fun getting to hear these.

Big Jim!?
How cool is this? Loved that piano roll and the brass coming in there on the musical break. This one is awesome too.

Joice,
I saw your post this morning and just wanted to pop-in quickly to say I really enjoyed hearing your version too. I always like the way you develop such pretty melodies for your songs. Lately, I've been striving to get out of my comfort zone and knock around on my guitar and keyboard more. You (and Ricki too) have been an inspiration to me for that, so I thank you both. I'm not around much on the forum these days because I'm always struggling to "balance" between work, kids, life, and songs...and dropping stuff along the way.
Wendy Thanks for noticing my melodies - guess I have always bent notes and melodies (to extreme even) without knowing what I was doing......
Well there is just mutual admiration going on here - 'cause everything you And Ricki do is Top Shelf!

Hey All,
Well, what a blast. A real licourice all sorts of texts and styles. I reckon that's what it's all about. Different takes on a very well wriiten song. There's so many diferent harmonics going on, and eveyone used them in a different way. A few quick comments.......
Bob - smooth as usual, and in your own style. Real classic T-bob.
Colin - like what you've done with the chording and phrasing. Real mellow. Gotta love the acoustic nature, and especially the lead break. Very natural.
Joyce Marie - intersting take on the chord structure, it brings out different harmonics on the same vocal melody. Playing outside, then bringing it back to the root notes is very effective.
Calvin - real subtle, could be easily backed up for a toe tapping roots version.
Ricki - really heartfelt, and a pure , pure vocal.
Wendy - haunting, and subtley sublime. Easily placed in film.
Mark - Arena sound and classic soul. Gotta love the b/v's. Magic.
Jim - I'm thinking either 60's or 20's here. Either adaption would fit equally as well.
Herbie - yep, definitely Herbalised . Can tell you're a live performer. You make the song your own, and "entertain" the listener with the results.
For my own, I just wanted to do something simple that could be thrashed out on a guitar, or sung with those dreadful duo's we've all heard in a bar, or worked up further to a band number.
Scott, you've got a great munber there. Hope all the different takes can give some inspiration. There's not many numbers that are "usable" in different contexts.
Before anyone complains about "back slapping", it's quite easy to see that these are all ideas, and good ideas which can be used further by the writer if he needs them in the future.
Best of all, good fun huh ?
cheers, niteshift

I want to thank everyone who did a cover of Champion. I loved each and every version - each one truly unique!
I took Niteshift's idea and created a Soundclick station where all ten covers are posted in the order they were submitted, followed by my original version - just in case anyone has the hankering to play them all in one shot.
Here is a link:
http://www.soundclick.com/members/default.cfm?member=scott59&content=station&id=731616
Again, thank-you everyone. I hope we continue to do these kind of things because I would like all of you to have the experience that I've had. What a great time!
Scott

Niteshift - Nice job. Whoda thunk it would fit with that beat?
Listening to the station is really fun. Same song 10 times? Not a problem.

I think you were thinking this would be cool as hell, which it is! Great mix too...might ease up just a teensy bit on reverb.

Mark, There is a little bit of reverb on a lot of things, but I just deleted the "tremolo" from the vocal depth line (hmmm, a little delay is there, too). Tremolo's still there on the harp, organ and guitar so the trem on the vox was probably too much. I never can really tell (ha, ha).

Hey Kevin,
Well, if you can't do a blues version, then life isn't worth living. Very cool, and real cruisy. That definitly goes in my "sitting under the plum tree, listening to JPF songs" file.
Not so crazy at all huh ?
cheers, niteshift

Thanks for the listens to mine and the nice comments.
niteshift: Loved that opening sequence. Quite the pro demo here. Vocals were solid -- was that you?
Herbietunes: I kept waiting for you to break into "Girl Bomb..." or something like that. Cool guitar parts. The lyric mods worked well as did the entire "How many times ..." section.
Big Jim: Was this a "Queen" inspired version? Cool brass section part. Very inventive.
Mark Kaufman: Nice piano opening and the guitar fits right in, too. Really liked it when the entire band kicked in. I was expecting a 100 part choir (LOL!). Good harmonies. Nice to bring the last section back down a little.
Wendy D.: Woah, a really laid back version. Very introspective and with vulnerability in the vocals. Quite nice and the guitar sounded good, too.
Ricki B: A "singer/songwriter" version, like something you would hear in a coffeshop. Good singing and playing, as expected.
Calvin Stewart: Definitely a "calvinized" version. You like to bounce everything along. Well it does work here.
Joice Marie: Hey, a new guitar style for you!!! Very nice picking, it really sets up your voice very well. Keep experimenting with that. Very enjoyable. Good singing, too.
Colin Ward: Good guitar playing here and your voice sounds perfect for this one. Good job with the band kicking in. You need to consider writing more tunes in this style. Excellently done! Very nice tone and note selection on the lead part.
Bob Pickens: Always a pleasure to hear you sing. You've turned this one into a comfortable song that you want to listen to with the fire going and everyone hanging out in peaceful reflection. Good one!
Scott: Yours seems to be a lot like a few of the other versions ... Oh wait .....
