Lucian,
I think some basic music theory does help, but I suppose you can figure things out just by bashing around on the guitar. I'm trying to do that more now than I used to. I think what happens initially is that you pick up the guitar, learn a few chords, and then start to write based around what you know. At least, I think that's how I've done it. The problem with that approach is that you get stuck just using the same chords over and over again. I think that's where some music theory can help. At least I think it's where it would help me. Obviously, everyone has a different approach to working out a song.
It's funny that you can "speak" Catfish. That would be a cute topic for a kids tune, or at least a good line in a song.

Caroline,
Sorry, I didn't mean to imply that you are following a formula. I meant that you are good at writing bridges in your songs. I understood what you meant about the song needing a lift. She should turn him into a pair of boots..maybe I'll work that in somehow.
One of my favorite stories from childhood involved a pair of snake skin boots. My parents were always (at best) struggling financially when I was a kid. One particular Christmas, my mom got some kind of windfall and bought my dad a pair of snake skin cowboy boots. My older brother came home from the Army and decided to clean the rifle to show off what he learned. As you can guess, my brother also decided to try on my dad's new boots and was still wearing them when he cleaned the gun. He shot himself in the foot. I don't think my dad ever even got to wear the boots.
People in my family have actually died after saying, "hey everybody, watch this!"

Guess I gotta join AA....I musta been One Amberbock to da Wind...sayin' this was an "AAA Song"...(& Overlookin' ALL The "B" Choruses!) B-B-B-B-B...Blimey!
Let's edit that other sorty-Gaffe to say "Dolly-SUNG Hook"...too! (With Crediting-Apologies to Mr Mann & Mz Weil!)
& finally, a Thank-You to Harriet for adding "Objective Correlative" to all our vocabularies & mindsets. (Never has a Fly-Covered Snakeskin been so poignant!)
(Thankee Brian, too...lest I forget in the rush to go off & pen The Next One!) This is a Fine Addition to our Learning Experiences.
Big Hugs, Stan

Hi Wendy
I'm way late here, Almost didn't see this. I haven't really been to active at all lately. I lie here until someone gives me a shot then I knock out some ones tune and go right back in my dizzy trance
I like most all of your songs for a few reasons and this being one of them. You have a great style. At first the ending chorus felt a touch too long to me. Like I wanted to here a different close out. than i realized Ah that's also what I like about it, you gave me what I didn't expect. That's what I got something different.
The song has a great feel. Love the chords changes! The lyric clicked for me and fit the style of the song very well. A few things could be tweaked for singing purposes but I'll tell you right now the lyrics as in some of your others are better than Norah Jones's. And I'm not pulling your chain. This is a fact. But what she has is that extra musical touch and of course that voice & piano.
So this is a very "artist" type song as is many of your others.
The bridge for this could be VERY subtle even perhaps a two line, one or two chord change.. See you have a dominating Pre-Chorus... meaning it feels like a change in your verses. And it feels like the songs changes often. Just not too drastic a change.
To me songs that have noticeable pre-choruses that also get bridges added to them can seem to get or feel long. This also happens with songs that have bridges and SOLO"S
So I feel a short and effective little bridge would do the trick. Dynamics will help this baby out lot as well. Who did this drum track? you? it's very cool man... As Lucy says when she tries to join Ricky's band as a sax player. "wild man, wild" That's the craziest man" cool man cool!
