Ableton Live and a large diaphragm condenser mic, besides all of the spicy stuff. It's a big myth that Live is just for DJ's.

On the road - for live performances I go simple a couple decent mics and a sony MD or Zoom H4. For Computer-based at home - usually Cubase 4 or Protools. Sometimes Logic - and loads of plug-ins. Would rather go to a studio!

Logic 8 Express and GarageBand on an iMac, Mackie mixer, Rode NT-2 mic, Behringer compressor, Emagic A/D/A box, Yorkville YS2 monitors and a Roland power amp. Used to use a Roland VS-880 and MC-500 sequencer: advantage was NO latency, but only 12-bit converters (great effects, though).

I too have changed a bit. Gave up on Vista and got a used fast XP desktop for my Audacity. M-Audio Audiophile 2496 card. PreSonus compressor ART preamp MXL and Shure mics.
Like playing the guitar, I think that knowing how to use the equipment is more important than what type you use (up to the point of a professional studio anyway).

Lately I've been recording "stereo" acoustic guitar tracks on both channels of a Korg MR-1 (actually a blend of a mic, and the builtin piezo pickup).
After that is done, I merge those tracks into a single track, fed into one channel of another Korg MR-1, while I add the vocal on the second channel.
I mix the DSD on my Sony Vaio, with the Soundreality (SigmaTel) chip & Sony's SonicStage.
Korg's AudioGate let's me convert the output format, as needed.
The Korgs were on clearance, $560 for the pair.
The Vaio is a re-furb.

use to use my fostex x 30 but it died.
tried an early version of audacity. but it died!!
straight to my computer, use total recorder, but me techness is rather slow.
downloaded the latest version of audacity and recently purchased the korg d4.
push comes to shove a studio.
Reaper sounds interesting.

Been using Reaper for a couple of years and LOVE it! Though I do not have experience with other daw's.
Studio Projects c1 mic Studio Projects vtb1 tube pre RNC Compressor Line 6 UX2
I am getting a pretty good sound but am curious about getting better interface/preamps.

I actually have a few setups:
REAPER on XP SONAR on Win2K (yep, still running that!) Garageband on Mac OS X
Believe it or not, I'm getting studio-quality tracks with Garageband. I think the stripped-down features actually encourage better recordings. I was planning on upgrading to Logic but now I might not bother.
I have an assortment of mics but my faves are just a Shure SM57 and an AKG condenser.
I use an M-Audio FastTrack Pro as the interface. It's...okay. Preamps are a bit more noisy than I like.
