Hi, just wondering what you use to record your stuff...but I'm looking for a bunch of posts with the SHORT answer, not all the gear in your arsenal. It might be interesting to get a sense of how many people use ProTools, Audacity, Cubase, Sonar or 4-track cassette tape, etc...
My short answer, these days, would be Cubase SX.
So what do you use?

Naw, I use a Tascam 4 track cassette, two $5.50 Dynamic Microphones I have had for over 40 years and an Acoustic Guitar. Of course I am only making demos of my songs.

Mine is like Ray's only maybe a little newer. Tascam 4-channel portable, records to a digital camera chip that can hold one song at a time. Drafts only--if I want something I'm going to sell, I'll go to a commercial studio.
I do nothing on the computer, but I do have Audacity if I ever want to learn how to use it.

Mainly Protools LE, but sometimes Logic Studio.
The converters are an important part of the recording chain. I use a Digidesign 002R, but rarely use the converters. I have an RME ADI-8 for the converters - big difference.
Have used in the past: Cubase, Digital Performer, Cakewalk (pre-Sonar. The first CD I produced for an artist (Jon Batson) was done using Cubase back when it was called Cubase VST.

I've used the Alesis ADAT with a Mackie 1604. None of it's been set up for a couple years. I think I want to go computer based soon. I just need a pet-free room to set it all up again.
Nice post, Mark - kind of helps me decide with more of an informed opinion what I want to do next.

Home studio is a Korg D1200. Portable gizmo is a Zoom H-4, which I've been using a lot. I have a version of Cubase that I don't use and audacity. I really like to use Protools but I'm still learning it.

Microphone (varies) -> Chameleon Labs 7602 -> EMU 1616m -> Cubase 4.1.2 running on Vista
It's taken me a long time to learn how to use each of these items in the chain, but it's been a labor of love and I think that my work sounds a lot better now than it did when I first started on a portable 8-track unit.

of late, it's been Cakewalk Home Studio (2004) and Music Creator 2 (2005). good, cheap studio mikes. decent Dell 2400 computer and a Behringer MX 1604 mixing board. the current CD, DIGITAL ECLIPSE, was recorded via the Dell, but mixed onto analogue tape, most of which was 1/4 inch. a few tunes were mixed on 1/2 inch tape. hope this helps.

SONAR Producer Edition, Waves and Sonitus Plugins among many others, MOTU 828mkII interface, pro mics including Neumann, Stedman, Shure...
Started a long time ago with Otari 24 track 2-inch, then over the years have gone from that to Pro Tools to my present Sonar/MOTU setup. The audio quality is awesome!

I've read so many good reviews of Reaper that I might make the change to it from Cubase SX one of these days. Free fully functional download to try, something like $50 to buy if you like it...several reputable producers and engineers that I chat with online seem to agree that it rivals any of the big guns, using a much smaller footprint.

Haven't heard of Reaper yet. I'll stick with Sonar PE, I've used cakewalk products as I say since version 1.0, way back in the eighties.
I'm certain an entry-level price like that will attract a lot of home-based studio customers. For me however, the formula of good gear, software and a solid, back-of-hand knowledge of your gear and and a set of good ears yields a pretty decent sound in the end.
I would love to hear something you've recorded with this software just to hear its capability.

Hi Ben T! Well, I found a great deal on the latest Cubase version, so I haven't learned Reaper. But I can assure you, its quality is every bit as good as any other DAW out there. But like you say, the important part of the formula is to learn whichever DAW you choose like the back of your hand.
The trouble with me is I'm not very familiar with the back of my hand.
