went to a Pat Pattison Songwriting workshop tonight hosted by http://AustinMusicFoundation.org
Found a great singer who's going to Berklee in the fall, hope to cowrite with her.
Here's a few things PAT said that resonated with me
1) He wore a black T Shirt that SAID "Write Fearlessly"
2) Be completely and absolutely willing to write CRAP, because CRAP is the best fertilizer, allow it to come out. you can make judgements about it later allow it to take you there, let connections happen
3) a chord is a very emotional thing, it creates a feeling
4) When things start moving, it starts moving you. Motion creates emotion.
5) use your rhyming dictionary as an idea stimulator
6) Just because you write a verse first doesn't mean it's your first verse.
7) sing a lyric line the way you'd say it, meaning: have the melody stress the same words in a lyric line that you'd stress when you speak it. sometimes a line says what you want it to say but if you use the wrong melody it might not say what you want it to say When you put a line to melody it should GAIN emotion not Lose it

found this interview with Jamey Johnson and Randy Houser inspiring, maybe you will too
John from Abbotstown, Pa., writes: "Jamey, your lyrics are powerful and poignant. Most songs it feels as if you know the emotions first-hand. What's the one piece of advice you would give to budding songwriters?"
JJ: Quit writing because it's Thursday and you have an appointment. Start writing because you have experienced life and you want to share what you've learned with other people. It's too easy to fall into the trap in Nashville -- you want to set your schedule, to write with people every day. After a while, you run out of material, and you go in and write a song just because somebody came up with a neat hook. You end up writing this whole song that you really don't know that much about, and you're just piecing together things from all over the place that really doesn't mean that much to anybody. But if you come at it from just a slightly different approach, you can take that same line that you and your co-writers thought was cool, apply it to something personal and end up with a way better song than if you'd done the opposite.
Songwriters tend to be the most guarded people, which is kind of odd because they are also the people who are expressing so much. A lot of songwriters have a problem with breaking down that wall and exposing part of themselves. They choose to remain faceless, nameless or anonymous, and they are afraid that element of their creativity is gonna go away if they let people in too much. The most prolific songwriters that I've been around have found a way to take that wall out of the way.
Letha from Stockbridge, Mich. asks: "Given that both of you are accomplished writers yourselves, what does it take to consider cutting another writer's material?" JJ: You've got to blow me away.
RH: That happened to me on my first record. The first single I released, 'Anything Goes,' is probably one of the best-written songs I've heard in a long time. It takes somebody knowing who you are. Sometimes writers know who an artist is and what they want to say and how they sing. I will never be opposed to cutting a song if somebody nails my life and what I'm going through. And when I first heard that song, it affected me like that. It was really hard to release a first single of a song that I didn't write. I had to throw down my pride and go, "You know what? These guys wrote a song that really affects me right now." But I had to feel that lyric and sing it as passionately as I can. Otherwise, I won't cut songs that I didn't write.
JJ: We went down to Key West and cut a session down there recently, and I told the guys, 'I'm not even gonna cut a song just because it's a good song.' Good songs are fine -- you've got to have that to make an album. But the best thing I could possibly hope for is something that I want to go out there and present to people as representative of me and where I am right now. There's nothing worse than being out there every night singing a song in your show that you don't really like, or that just doesn't have that much relevance in your life. I need to put together my show with songs that I feel like I can relate to the best, because it's my job to go out there and take that very song and deliver that to those people who came there to see us perform. If you don't connect to it on some level, how can you expect them to connect to it? There's not a hit big enough to cross that border.

I haven't written much for the past year but it's picked up. I went to a friends gig and wrote a lyric for him to consider.
I upgraded my membership with broadjam and loaded a few songs.
Renewed my membership with songramp and added more space so I added songs I haven't had on my site before.
Hope to write more & cowrite more and get some new songs cooking, plus finish up some old ideas and demo several songs, maybe one or 2 a month.
Safe in Your Arms + Halie Loren cowritten with Wake Eastman Performed by Halie Loren http://www.songramp.com/mod/mps/viewtrack.php?trackid=83391

On a Song Ramp forum Wed, Feb 23, 2011 3:46 pm I asked MAB thanks MAB, hope you're doing awesome MAB I'm considering demoing the song I cowrote with you After You Lose http://www.songramp.com/mod/mps/viewtrack.php?trackid=83333 How does demoing work with you? Ande
MAB Replied: Wed, Feb 23, 2011 4:15 pm
Ande,
The problem with me and demos is I cannot be financially responsible for over 2000 songs. So I do the heavy lifting, the creation, moving things along, teaching the process. The other writer is responsible for getting critiques, checking it against his or her catalogue and paying for demos. From there I generally will drop CD's off periodically to my publishers and song pluggers. Many get pitched. But everyone is running into the "inside cut."
So you have to look at it as more than just pitching a song. You pitch overall catalogue, it goes on web sites, facebook, My Space, you Tube, you use it to attract local and unsigned artists. Everything is a pitch.
I am sitting in Canada right now working with over thirty artists who are all doing songs of mine. As I write more with them and add to their catalogue, they will make the same decisions.
People pay me for my experience and abilities.
MAB

I replied: Thu, Feb 24, 2011 3:11 pm
Hey MAB,
I get that. I figured that if I really wanted it demoed that I would need to pay for it.
I was more interested in your opinion of 1) do you feel our song is even worth demoing, 2) what demoing might cost? and 3) if we did demo it, would you be present to give the demo studio some direction?
Ande After You Lose http://www.songramp.com/mod/mps/viewtrack.php?trackid=83333
MAB Replied: Thu, Feb 24, 2011 5:09 pm
Ande,
Costs for the demo at Jay's place is $550 per song. I do direct and produce the song and make sure it is put together right. I am not the final arbitrator of what song is demoable.
I suggest the other writer (who pays) looks at it in the context of their own catalogue.
What types of songs do they not have? Does it fit a slot they don't have? Is it conversational? Does it touch the right nerve? Does it have multiple applications? (Multiple artists?) Does it measure up to other songs out there? Is it clearly written? What kind of reaction has it gotten either live or on demo? Would it be a song that local artists might record? Is it pitchable in a variety of directions?
Is it worth spending money by the other writers? Would I present it to my publishing/pitching contacts?
In all cases for me, it is yes. I would suggest to always get other opinions. Then go with your gut.
MAB
~ ~ ~ ~ ~
so Now I am thinking and deciding what to do, but I thought his checklist was very cool and brought up some great issues.
another question might be: Does this song stand a decent chance of ever earning back the cost of the demo?

It's an interesting dialogue you have here Ande & Marc. Great list of questions to evaluate the potential of a song! What struck me, without making any evaluations of the song itself was, that if you wrote out the coach's name "Swinson", you would have a song that is pitchable for the tv/film market as well, because the lyric then won't have any specifics in it aside from the ball theme.
It would probably make a sounder desicion not to demo, but to record, the song, meaning getting the proper work-for-hire contracts done with the studio, so you can use it commercially. That is a way to increase the potential ROI of any given song, as most songs won't get near an artist opportunity. If it's a recording, at least there are no restrictions on it, if somebody else take interest. And with a lyric as general as this, it almost doesn't take any additional effort at all.

Nashville makes you change the way you view things. In many activities, particularly people from outside the town, most people view everything in the prism of "This might happen." An appointment, a song, an artist, etc. It could always "be the next thing that will happen."
Nashville changes this in everyone. Since you get to know people who have hit songs but still have very little money, people that have deals but go nowhere, people that you would think are on top of the world, but are far from it, you begin to look at it as "nothing is going to happen" so you make decisions based upon what you really feel you should do instead of what you hope will happen.
I have never met a writer that went "When we wrote that song, we KNEW that was a hit. Never. Sure they would like that and believed in it. But that was not the primary thought.
When you decide what to demo, you have to see it as an overall thing instead of just one song. Writer's catalogue, types of songs, opportunities for local and regional artists. It is never about one thing. And at the end you have to demo it because you believe in it for you.
When it comes down to it. that is what is important.
MAB
PS: And if you don't have a single that gets widespread airplay you will probably not pay for the cost of the demo.

Hi Ande....
Just a reminder for you......you posted two versions of the same song ( very nice btw : ) but our TOS states......when posting the same song, different versions, you are to wait at least 2 days.....also....there should be quite a difference between them...I'll send you the info. ( I'll make an exception this time even though they are very similar, just an added vocal )
I'll let YOU decide which one to take down for today......but feel free to post tomorrow.....the reason for this is....it gives all memebers a chance in the open mic.....
We appreciate your understanding- keep creating!

My Response
lucy
I was unaware of that policy
I accidentally first posted the track for you woke up my heart thinkikng it was the full song
I've now categoriezed it in the instrumental category
then I posted the full song with lyrics so I'd assert they are 2 different songs
I don't think broadjam or itunes have such a policy about listing songs and their tracks
I deleted the one I just loaded
Ande

here's Lucy's Reply
Mornin Ande-
I know "other" sites do things different than SR....remember....way back SR was privately owned and the owners did things...their way....their TOS still stands today...cos it works for us here. Like I said...I appreciate your understanding....here's the info I ment to send you.....
Thanks
Lucy
Different versions, same song: It is ok for a member to have the same song on their page more than once as long as the versions of the songs are different. When in doubt, this is open for judgment by Admin as to whether the versions are different enough... also folks let's not get carried away by redoing every song on your play list twice. Thank you. : ) Example: If you changed only a few words, or added another instrument to the mix, then no. The newer (or older) version should be posted using the EDIT command instead of a separate post as explained above. On the other hand, if you have an unplugged version [just a guitar/vocal or piano/vocal version] AND a full blown arrangement of the same song then yes, you may post both versions on your page. If you have a different vocalist sing the song, then yes. Just do NOT post on the open mic at the same time. A couple days should be sufficient.

details on MABs Write Up Songwriting lessons
Email me to sign up at mbarne4908@aol.com Many great ideas have been generated across the country from workshops. One idea in particular that has created a lot of interest and provided a high degree of development for songwriters came from Cliff Nelson of the Orange County Songwriters group…”Write-Up” lessons.
This idea came out of a need expressed by one of their members who mentioned that “It’s one thing to get constructive critiques. That is very helpful. But, it would be even more helpful to learn certain rules and pathways as we are writing, instead of on the backend.” So the “Write-Up” lesson was born.
Now, hundreds of songs later - with a number on hold and / or currently in play – songwriters who have participated in the Write-Up lessons have a much better understanding of songwriting from a focused Nashville perspective.
How do Write-Up lessons work? They are a concentrated 2-hour appointment where the songwriter brings in ideas for songs and I work with them to develop their ideas and teach them how to effectively co-write. The best songs come from conversations and real life experiences. Although each song is different, there are rules that are followed. I help the songwriters to “get outside” themselves and look at the subject in a variety of ways…finding a twist or hook that makes the song memorable and better.
For example, during one lesson a songwriter wanted to write about how he had been hurt by a girl who did not return his affection. The first thought was to write a “poor, poor, pitiful me…you hurt me” song. Instead we gave it a twist, turning it into an up-tempo rocker called “It’s Gonna Be Me.” The guy in the song is oblivious to the girl brushing him off, with the best line stating “What the heck’s a restraining order?”
Another example is from a guitar player for the legendary Frank Zappa. He needed to adjust his guitar playing style to fit a country format. The result was a killer song that came from a conversation he overheard in Nashville. A waitress who had waited on Hank Williams in the 50’s is still remembering him today and is still… “Waiting on Hank.”
These Write-Up lessons have also been very beneficial for songwriters who haven’t written for years and need updating in their form of lines and present tense.
In all cases, my role is to bring sensibilities of looking at subjects in a variety of ways and styles. I’m able to lend my experience from what I’ve learned from the industry’s best through the years and applying it during the Write-Up lessons.
What happens after the Write-Up lesson? We spend time taking an objective look at all the songwriter’s songs. If creating a demo is a goal, we determine which songs warrant a demo and to what extent (Guitar vocal? Full demo?). This helps the songwriter best use their time and money when they take their song(s) into the studio.
Once the demo is complete, I pass all the songs by my song plugging contacts in Nashville. If the song catches the interest of a plugger as being “pitchable”, they take it from there. Because we take the time up front to create the song, then present it at its best on a demo, many songs are pitched. Since this represents people’s hopes and dreams, I take it very seriously and provide the best end product possible.

I see tons of other JPF members other than just Harold Payne (who's one of my best friends... totally awesome guy). Halie Loren, Donna Aylor, Abi Tapia, Tammy Edwards and of course MAB to name a few. Great collection of folks! (And I know you've written with many other JPFers such as Steve Seskin etc. He's a JPF Song of the Year winner and Tammy is a Songwriter of the Year winner as well as Album of the Year winner...
The point is, networking and choosing awesomely talented people to work with (who are all nice on top of it all) shows just how smart Ande is. Folks would be smart to follow his leads.

SXSW is in full swing in Austin TX. Last night (Tue Mar 15th, 2011) I went to the BMI kick off party at Stubbs. The Ginn Sisters played first, they sang BGV's on Hand Over Your Heart that I cowrote with Abi Tapia. Then Gary Clark Jr then Dale Watson.
Next I went to Threadgills for Austin Songwriter's Group Showcase. The highlight of the evening was watching Sonny Throckmorton perform. He is a living legend. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sonny_Throckmorton http://www.nashvillesongwritersfoundation.com/t-z/sonny-throckmorton.aspx
this morning I went to Austin 93.3 KGSR’s Live Broadcast from the Four Seasons http://sxsw.kgsr.com/?page_id=40
I arrived just as Hayes Carll was wrapping up. Darn. http://hayescarll.com/news.aspx He got a mention in this article http://www.austin360.com/music/more-austin-bands-making-money-from-licensing-to-1176151.html
Next was Fitz & The Tantrums, wow talk about energy what an exciting act.
Next was Brett Dennon I love his sound and quirky lyrics. I discovered his music in a ross dress for less, His song She's Mine was playing through the Muzak system and I loved his sound and writing. My wife got a pic with him and he autographed my latest songwriting book. His nex CD comes out in April.
Finally was Kat Edmondson, http://www.katedmonson.com she is a wonderful lovely petite jazz singer with a truly classic haunting voice. Kat is well on her way with a Fan Funded 2nd CD using KickStarter.com http://www.kickstarter.com/projects/katedmonson/kat-edmonsons-second-album
I have many more plans for SXSW
thank you Brian I appreciate your kind words and this wonderful community you created. I'm blessed to collaborate with awesomely talented artists, producers and writers.
Brian
