Hi, Brian,
Thanks for the update!
This next round is pretty important because the the final winners will be selected from those 20 nominees...I hope that members will vote. Thirty six votes so far seems like such a small number - when you think about how many message board users there are - A LOT more than 36 !!!!
It is too bad that some people seem to have lost interest. In the past lyric awards, my lyric didn't get chosen for the second round...but I still voted. I hope that more people turn in votes in the next few days.

I'd really like to vote, but July has been very busy for me as I suspect it has for many here. But I'm not sure if I'll be able to find the time before Sunday's deadline to give 50 lyrics the attention they deserve. To my thinking, it wouldn't be fair to the songwriters for me to not give as much effort as I did in round 1 (I took notes on each song and ranked them 1-10 and culled the top 12 or so, then re-read each multiple times and reranked again until I felt confident I had made the right choices). Because there are so few votes in, seems that each vote really counts more now than before. Any chance of extending the deadline a week or even a few days?

Gypsy,
I may extend the deadline for people who specifically ask for more time. But to do it just to get a few more to show up later seems pointless. For the most part, those who are interested have either voted, are in the process of doing it or will contact me and ask for more time. If you need more time, let me know how much and I will be happy to try and accomodate you.

Wondering aloud here - in the second round two years ago, did many folks participate in the voting that did not submit a lyric?

Time has been a big factor for me as well. I have only been home 3 of the last ten days. Working away from home and I have been staying at the jobsite. No internet access there, But I will try to get it done tomorrow. Have my granddaughters birthday party here tomorrow so time will be tight.

My votes for Round 2 will be submitted in just a few minutes. I'd like to think the slow response in voting is because people ARE taking their time to really read and mull over all the lyrics. With work and other life things going on, it does take a little time.
I was pleased that four of my five Round 1 picks made it to Round 2. Alas, not all of them are getting my nod in Round 2.
I had the pleasure of taking 2nd place two years in a row in the Lyric contest, so am I bitter at not making it this time? Not on your life. I'm thrilled to be a part of this process and glad to see so many of my JPF friends make it this far, some I voted for and some who were not on my voting page. Way to go, everybody!

I just sent in my vote. It wasn't for lack of interest, but I felt it was so important to take the time to carefully consider each lyric, and they were all impressive, a number of times over a period of weeks before making the difficult choices.
Good luck to all the finalists.

GREAT to hear that more folks are getting their votes in!! I truly appreciate the time and energy that these busy folks are contributing to the process...I agree that it does take lots of time to go over every lyric...but...I know, from judging in a few of the JPF Awards and the past lyric contest, that you feel pretty satisfied when you know you've been quite fair in giving every single entry a chance.
I was amazed at how much time it took to judge - but I was not willing to rush through it. Just as I would want any judge to really give my material a good "listen", I tried to give every entry a fair chance
MANY Thanks to everyone who's voted !!

Hi Folks,
Don't forget Round 2 votes are due tomorrow.
An interesting Phenom is currently happening. The bottom 7 lyrics that made it into the Top 50 are all comfortably in the final 20. I am not sure what it means or why, but it's quite a surprise. And as it stands the lyric that was #50 and barely got in is in 2nd place overall right behind the lyric that got the most votes in the first round of any lyric. Voting is a weird thing.

Hi Folks,
Today is the last day to vote. There's only a handful of lyrics not in the running for a nomination this late in the voting. Over a dozen are within a single vote of making the nominations round. Only a handful of lyrics are pretty much guarenteed a slot at this point. Very tight.

So I assume the votes are in and tabulated - but we wait until some time in August for all category nominees to be announced.

It will more likely be early September before nominations are out. The final haven't been decided as we still have mentor and industry judges to look at the round 2 lyrics. We have a good idea of the top 16.. but the next 12 are all very close.

Hi Brian, thanks again for all your hard work on this, you sure look like an amazing soul from afar...
I'm hoping to make it to the final round... and trying to figure out how to swing a trip to the awards show, possibly booking some other dates in the area to help defray the costs of the trip...
This is a really delicate question to ask I bet... but can you maybe touch base with me offline as to whether I'm in the top 16 that you mentioned above as "fairly positive" to be nominated?
It would help me a lot in booking some shows that week out there and deciding whether to dive headlong into booking a full two week tour on my way up to Sacramento for Far-West.
Thanks so much, and again, the work you've done (and are doing) even "just" lining up a venue (I read your blog) looks incredible. You're an amazing soul. All the best. -Charlie

Hi charliecheney:
Looks like you're new to the boards. Welcome aboard. I also got into the top fifty and believe that my lyric is strong enough to make it to the final twenty..but I think it may not be right for Brian to start telling some people how they have performed and not others. I come all the way from Africa - Kenya precisely..if there is any arrangement I believe I should even start thinking of a flight to U.S.A., accomodation, and such kind of stuff. But If Brian sees it right to tell you how you have done, I bet he should tell me too so that I can arrange.
Thanks and I wish you all the best in the competition and in your future at the Jp Folks Boards! I have never seen such a more friendly board with brotherhood and sisterhood. I have managed to grow to heights I had not imagined musically before. God Bless Brian!God Bless JP Folks members!

Hi Guys,
There's no chance of us spilling the beans before all nominations are done and announced. We also don't tell people who the winners are before the awards show, though 100's of people ask every year. I'll tell both of you guys the same thing I tell actual nominees who are trying to decide whether to come to the awards or not:
If coming to So. Cal. for the Awards show is dependent on you being nominated, best to assume you won't be and make your decision that way. (I tell nominees to assume they won't win and then decide if they want to be at the awards show). We won't tell anyone or give hints as to whether you'll be a nominee or whether you will win. You need to decide based on the assumption you won't. That way there's no chance of being disappointed or feeling like you wasted your money. Everyone is welcome to come to the awards show (until it sells out of course.. which I think it will this year). But if you can't justify coming unless you win (or in your cases get nominated) then don't come. Not that we don't want you, but we want people who want to be there regardless of the outcome. Everyone is happier that way and if they happen to win, that's a huge bonus. If they don't, they weren't planning on it anyway.
Brian

Brian,
I agree ! The best part about attending the 2004 JPF awards was meeting new people and people I've talked to on the boards, hearing a huge amount of incredible music from a wide range of genres and networking...
Can't wait for this year's big event

Thanks Brian
I just needed an answer from you. I needed you to tell us that there is no room for unfairness to certain people, and 'fairness' to others. That is all! I do not expect you to give me any hint..I did not even bother asking for any before I got into the top fifty. I believe in myself and God and I am patient..whether or not I get into the top whatever..I believe in winning in many ways. If I do not get any award, then I will have done what I did not do last year! That is some kind of 'win'. I have never entered the competition since I joined in 2004. I did this year, so it is like I 'won something for myself' this year.
Winning is not all about getting trophies and awards. there is more to competitions.
Thanks Brian and God Bless you for the effort you have put on this site. You see..'you are a winner in so many ways though you did not enter any of the competitions'!

The Flying Karamozov Brothers had a great line they would use early in their career just before they passed the hat...
"...and virtue is its own reward... if you like small change. And speaking of small change!"
They also used to say (when asked if they could change a twenty) "Certainly Sir! We can change it from your twenty, to our twenty."

Hi Folks,
We're ironing out some problems with songwriter credits (i.e. if the person claiming to have written a song actually did, or in a few cases, who wrote it in the first place). We've removed some potential nominees simply because they are unresponsive after many requests for info. Our goal is/was to announce this stuff tonight or tomorrow, but we have to have it right before we can and we have to have all 80 Genres (albums and songs)as well as the video stuff and lyric stuff completely right before we can post it all. Sorry for the delay.
Brian
