I would open it to everyone currently registered on JPF, simply because what may be considered a good/moving lyric to an experienced writer may not necessarily be seen in the same light by someone else. Granted that everyone here is somewhat involved or at least interested in the music industry - but what a publicist, lawyer, manager, or musician might see is probably going to be different than what a songwriter sees.

Block voting is when a bunch of folks agree (outside of their independent review of the lyric entries) to vote for a single lyric or group of lyrics. An example: if you went out and told 100 of your friends that your lyric was number X and asked them each to come here, register and vote for your lyric. It would turn the contest into an internet popularity test rather than the peer contest it is intended to be.

I'm not worried about newbie JPFers grouping together and doing block voting - the concern for manipulating the result is someone who is in the contest soliciting votes outside JPF. Those folks then come in and register solely for the purpose of voting for a single individual's song. It is also possible for an entrant to log in from different computers under different names and vote multiple times.
If you restrict voting to folks who were members before Feb.1, 2004, no one could now go on a campaign of soliciting non-members to obtain votes, or re-register themselves under a different name to vote repeatedly.
Also - I think giving AT LEAST two weeks to vote is essential. Not that it will necessarily take two weeks worth of work to vote, but on any given week many of us may not have any free time to devote to properly reviewing 50 lyrics to pick the winners.

I think the idea of restricting the voting to those registered to post prior to a certain date is a good idea but Feb. 1 might noty be the date I'd pick. How about only those who were registered to post at the time the contest began, excluding the 50 nominees. Would it be too much hassle to have a secondary level of registration so that those who wanted to vote would have to register to vote. Probably a dumb question, of course that would be a pain. Sorry, just thinking out loud.

I don't know how you keep it all straight Brian. My initial reaction was open up the voting to all and a one week voting period, but whatever method you feel is best is ok by me. I'm just glad to be a part of it all. Well wishes to you and your family.

I'm not really concerned with the specific method that is chosen as I know you will ensure the integrity of the process to the extent that it is possible to do so.
The only restrictions I would put on the voting are (1) a 2 week time frame in which to vote and (2) anyone registered prior to 1 Feb 2004 would be permitted to vote.
As Cindy (TINK) said, I'll go with the majority, as this is *OUR*...not *MY*...forum.

I like Alan's suggestion. I'm sure that whatever you decide will be fair and equitable.
As far as the time frame given . . . 2 weeks sounds fine, but people will need only as long as you give them. How many categories and winners in each this year?

Hi Brian, I have been judging Karaoke contests in the Cleveland area for several years and This is my experience with the process. We have four to six judges and use the one to ten scale in three catagories. Each contestant has three scores on the judges papers which are handed in to the tally master. When the competition is very close, I am sometimes surprised at who has come out on top. Not always my choices, however, always one that deserves to win and in my top three picks. My point is this. I don't think it matters much if you have 170 judges or 6 to 10 judges. If they are all judging fairly, the best lyric will come out in the top three and most often in first place if it is a shiner. Brian,I also want to thank you for the time you have put into this project for us. We all want you to know that your efforts in making sure this group remains a class act are not going un noticed
by any of us. We truly appreciate you and what you do for the wonderful world of music and it's creators. I am confident that whatever you decide to do about round two will be completely fair. I was not at all surprised with last year's winners. I have read all of the entries and have chosen ten lyrics that I feel should be in the running. I look forward to seeing how close my favorites are. There are three lyrics that I thought were first placers, though they were not on the page that I judged. Good luck to all who have entered this year. There are some fabulous lyrics on these few pages IMHO. Idamarie

I hope things are going okay on the family front. Personally I think 2 weeks allows for enough time for people to take care of other commitments whilst allowing adequate time to give the lyrics appropriate attention.
I also agree that opening the voting is a good idea; I believe you would possibly have a membership list and I would suggest that voting be restricted to all members registered with JPF on or before the time the lyric submission post was closed.
Of course this would mean each post being checked. Whatever you decide I am not concerned so long as I can still vote even if I didn't make the cut.

Hi Folks,
I am going to post the Round 2 Lyrics sometime today (Thursday, Feb 26th). Please keep in mind that no matter how long we give folks to vote, we won't be announcing the nominees until the other categories are ready and that will be AT LEAST May, 2004. So we have plenty of time for the process. I agree that 2 weeks is the right length for people to do it. The big hitch is the newsletter. AOL will no longer let us use their service to send our newsletter. (The group has gotten too large for them). We are going to have to pay a service (most likely Topica, as they are the cheapest and most likely NOT to get blocked by AOL spam filters) but it costs a lot of money to send as many emails as we do and I've been working on coming up with the finances to do it. Fortunately our friends at the Future of Music Coalition are sharing part of a grant they got with us to do a survey (which you'll all get via email soon) and with that money, I can pay for a year of the newsletter service we need.
I want to be sure we have time/chance to announce the voting in the newsletter.. so I might post all the entries for a while before actually flipping the switch on for voting. So people can read them at their leisure for a time).
I have some factoids to go along with the results. The voting was really close for the last couple spots. I feel bad for those that came close but didn't make it.. but I have that same feeling whether we have 5 slots or 50.. (and probably would feel bad for the 101st lyric if we recognized 100.. ) so keep in mind that our goal is to bring positive attention to some cool lyrics and hopefully by doing so, everyone, including those not chosen this time around, will benefit from that positive attention as a group.
