Hi, two things.
Entries aren't randomized, in that pages are presented in chronological order. Who knows, there might be some factor favoring early (or late) submissions. Might there be some easy way to create new pages with the entry dates randomized? Maybe not a big deal at all, but worth contemplating.
Also, I submitted a lyric on 5-28. When I just looked at it on 6-05, I saw that all the apostrophes had somehow changed to babble characters since I last looked at my lyric in this forum. So without thinking, I edited the post to fix the apostrophes. Hopefully this late "edit" won't disqualify me!
Cheers, Hoagie

Brian, I thought that the thread for submitting new songs has been closed. Why are there new songs being entered? Is the thread open again? Some of my friends would like to submit their songs but thought the submission date was the 31st. Frank V.

The thread is open for several reason. First, so that a few people who had problem posts could re-post correctly. These include folks who had sent me lyrics directly via email instead of posting them. Throughout the entry period I re-directed many folks to post correctly, but when the deadline hit, I had to lock the post. So I gave them the same chance to post correctly that I gave everyone else. Also, it is open so that people missing lyric author, title and copyright info could correct it. We still have 21 lyrics missing title or author info that needs to be fixed for us to leave them included in the entries. As for the question about fixing stuff on your post, I don't mind if you do that while the post is open, but once posts are numbered, you can't change anything else or it will have to be deleted. We have to have a cut off so things can be judged.
As for early/late posting, since each page is judged individually in the first round against the other lyrics on that page, date of post doesnt' matter. It might affect if you posted with many other quality writers, but that could have happened on any given day. Also keep in mind that people who tried to post at the end of a relatively weak page might learn later that they posts have shifted because of duplicates or invalid posts and their strategy might backfire. We try to keep "strategy of position" irrelevent the best we can so that the only criteria being judged is the quality of your lyric.
That's the scoop. Once post #'s are included things are locked in. And without direct permission from me, any new posts will be deleted before we start. Of the 3 new posts, only 2 were authorized.
Brian

Hi Brian,
In the listing above, my entry, #438, "In the Great Desert of Brazil," is listed incorrectly, as "Lyrics by Astrud Gilberto Hoagie." Actually, I'm Hoagie Hill, sole writer. (I noted Astrid Gilberto just as a stylistic reference for the music.) Please correct this, or let me know who I should ask to do so.
Cheers, Hoagie Hill

Kaley,
That's just a glitch when I hand numbered all the posts. (Even that was a pain! hahah). So it shouldn't affect what you are doing. Thanks to everyone so far that is helping out. If we're all set today, I will send out the instructions and assign voting pages for everyone. Right on schedule!
Brian

I've never entered another lyric contest. (No offense taken) I just think this is my best lyric. Next time around I'll try another one.

You still have my lyric listed incorrectly -- now in both threads that contain the listing. The correct author of No. 438 is "Hoagie Hill" (me).
Meanwhile, I see that my stylistic reference to Astrud Gilberto has been removed from the lyric itself. That's a shame. By analogy, if one wrote a sonnet and subtitled it "in the manner of William Blake," one would consider that an integral part of the work. Ideally my lyric should retain the subtitle, "Sung in the manner of Astrud Gilberto."

Hoagie,
This database means nothing beyond being a tool so that you can find what page your lyric is on. That's why no one was rushing to correct it. It serves no other official purpose. Since you know where your lyric is located, it's served it's only needed purpose.
As for extra comments being removed: This is a lyric category. Lyrics are judged on their free standing merit. Some people added mp3 links.. some people gave background stories as to what it was about, others explained what motivated them and still others made references to the style of the lyric and music both. If we had allowed it, I bet someone would have posted a video for the song or impressionistic paintings inspired by it. None of that extra stuff is relevant. Let your lyric do the talking.
Those other things are beyond the scope of judging it for the merit of the lyric. Without opening it up for everyone to include background info and thus making reading the posts that much more difficult and time consuming, it's not fair to let a few have "extra" factors alone. If someone was influenced based on your stated influence or "in the style of" versus what lyric you actually wrote, that wouldn't be appropriate. If they wouldn't be swayed by it, then it served no purpose in the first place. Either way, it had to go.
Brian

Brian, I take your point that lyrics should be judged on their "free standing merit." Mp3s and such definitely represent a slippery slope.
But here's some food for thought. With respect to future contests, I would argue that the edge of that slope is further beyond what you would assume to be the purity of the lyric. By your take, even the many "V's" and "C's" that writers have inserted should not be allowed. These are performance directions -- not unlike "sung in the manner of." (The singer doesn't sing "V.")
At the same time, a lyric is itself an elaborate set of "performance directions," a map or recipe of what essentially exists to be sung. It's ultimate form is not text on paper. It is analogous to the printed notes in a musical score. If the contest were for printed music, would directions like "molto adagio" be disallowed?
Again, for future contests, I would appreciate being able to read directions like "in a bossa nova style," or "minor key, 6/8 time," for instance. Brief annotations like these -- categorically indistinguishable from "V" or "C" -- could help lift the text off of the page, while retaining the emphasis on the words and avoiding the slippery slope of mp3s and the like.
Ultimately it's a question of whether a lyric can be said to exist apart from its song. If it can, then maybe what you've got here is a poetry contest. ;-)
2 cents, Hoagie

poetry and music, now thats novel. while i see the points of both sides, i think all is fine, and if this is only a poetry contest then let it sing to your heart. ( unless of course you have a mp3 handy.) cheers dct

Hoagie,
We've been doing the awards since 1999 and over 50,000 people have participated over the years (over 25K this year alone). You're one of the few people ever to have a problem with our format. But I am happy to explain where we're coming from. We have over 150 awards categories that we recognize this year. The only one that is solely for words is the Lyric category. For you to suggest that a posted lyric without extra direction and guidelines is a poem is bordering silly. Would a Lennon/McCartney song need the extra words such as "to be sung in a rock and roll format" or "inspired by Little Richard" for it to NOT be a poem? Obviously not. Nor is it the case here. There are certainly all types of lyrics entered. Some might be better suited as poems. But the obvious intent of all who entered is that they are song lyrics. Among the entrants this year, we have hit writers, Grammy nominees, many previous JPF award nominees and winners and a lot of seasoned pro's. We also have entry level folks taking a shot. That's one of the coolest things about what we do. Everyone gets a chance, famous or unknown, talented or just getting started. Your use of "Poem" appears to be derogatory. I think that's short sighted. And it's simply not accurate. Is your entry a poem because that line of text was removed? (Not to mention the reality most folks wouldn't know who Astrud Gilberto was in the first place. For those wondering, she's a famous figure in the Brazilian Bossa-Nova world). It even confused the volunteer to mistook your words to indicate that someone else contributed to the verses. That's distracting and un-needed. The point of having a consistent process is simply to be as fair as we can to everyone and make it as simple and straight forward to pull all this off using volunteers as we can.
If you wanted to present your work with musical and performance attributes, you should have submitted it as a recording and entered it along with the other 350,000 songs. (And perhaps you already have.. I don't know if you entered anything else or not). That way you can present your lyric with someone performing it in whatever style you please. And just for clarification, we don't allow additional material/info/bios/accomplishment etc.. to enter into the judging process for the music categories either. The music is judged directly on the merits of the recording. We have Grammy winners, #1 writers and hit major label artists mixed in to the entrants this year. Allowing extra info would likely allow for biases based on things not music related which defeats the entire point in our opinion. There are plenty of other awards that give out prizes to the famous or most popular.
Back to the lyric category, if we allow one addition, we must allow ANY addition to be fair. If we make judgement calls, you, ironically, are living proof that someone out there would cry foul. (Just as your suggestion that having the letter V or C crosses the line.. to me a ridiculous claim.. but it's a perfect illustration why allowing YOUR particular choice of an "extra" to enhance the perception of your lyric for voting purpose is unfair unless we allow all of them). Using a signifier for Verse or Chorus is a fairly universal part of most song structures. References to a famous Brazilian Bossa-Nova figure is not.
A great lyric doesn't need to be "in the style of" anyone to be a great lyric. In fact, just the opposite should be true. It should work GREAT in ANY style of music or performance. This year alone we received over a dozen different recordings of the Rolling Stones Paint It Black. From Bluegrass to Gothic/Industrial, to Country to Jazz to an interesting Dance version. The lyrics and in these cases melody as well, both worked in all formats.
So, I am sorry your disappointed in our process. We've been fairly successful in keeping everyone happy for the most part over the years, but I am sure now and then we'll simply not see eye to eye with someone.
Brian

Hi Brian,
Nothing derogatory intended, nor am I disappointed -- having only recently discovered this site and the contest(s), I'm delighted to see it happening. I just thought I'd point out what to me seems to be a curious discontinuity in the types extra-lyrical info that can be included. Since you appear to be conscientious and detail-oriented, I thought maybe you'd appreciate my perspective.
Cheers, Hoagie
