He is amazing. But he did mention something about wishing he could sleep once in a while. I agree with you Terri! I think the least we could do is help him get a little shuteye by showing a little initiative.

Hello! I've been gone for a couple of weeks. I am eager to really get things going. As far as getting coordinators to respond, if someone volunteers, then they should have already considered the time that it takes to be a coordinator. If they didn't, then they should not be coordinating. People just need to be assertive and work on getting things moving. Brian can't be expected to be everywhere.

Hello, everyone - Carey Colvin here, in Washington, DC. Guess I've been a little too busy lately, as I just discovered this board was here! I like the ideas and helpful hints posted - very cool. My own ideas for the Washington, DC chapter are to generate a monthly newsletter, a monthly meeting, and work up some topical seminars. I also plan on doing a showcase. One thing I plan to stress to members is that this is THEIR chapter - I want to hear their ideas, their plans, what they want out of it, and then try to find ways together to implement them.
I just browsed some of the posts here and am now going back to read them more thoroughly - I just wanted to take a moment to introduce myself, mention a little about what the Washington chapter is going to try to accomplish, and say hi .

I think we're on the edge of a roll coming up. Lots of new programs and fun stuff launching and finally Roadtrip Season is back on!

Quite true, Lisa, my feelings exactly. In my unimaginable current schedule, I only have time to go to my local chapter and the coordinators board.
Originally posted by Lisa Martin: Hello All!
I will be co-coordinating the Northampton, MA chapter with Guy-Michael Grande. I'm embarrassed to admit that I am still very new to the JPF boards even though I've been a member for over a year. It's hard to sift through every forum looking for new messages and I'm quite sure there's an easier way that I just haven't discovered yet. So this post comes very late.....but not because I'm unmotivated. Perhaps this is the case for others as well?
Looking forward to working with all of you!

Hi, its me from Albany NY. Getting great results with the Chapter, have about 42 members now and the East Coast Road Trip at Borders in Albany is filling up quickly. Valerie DeLaCruz took care of the Venue, PA and publicity, and I am doing the people work, and we are keeping one another informed. Its working out great and I have had many offers from folks to help out too. It should be a lot of fun! marie taziki acc

We're trying to get off the ground here in Honolulu. We have our first group meeting coming up and after that, lots of possibility.
As for checking the boards, I'm terrible about getting to my computer every day. It's difficult to make the time to write everyday! I'll try harder, though.

Hello All,
This is Dave Rutkofske checking in from Port Huron, Michigan. I recently signed up to be a contact point to start a new chapter but have never heard back if I was accepted or where to go from here. I would welcome any input. I'm active with a small outdoor venue and recording studio. I also worked on a regional music festival this year which is now going to be a yearly thing.
Thanks. Dave

Hi Folks,
As most of you know I am on the road. When I am, working on stuff like the chapters is physically impossible due to time limitations. I do work on them in spurts, but to have a successful chapter, we have to have self starting self motivated local volunteers, otherwise it's very slow going to get interaction with me during Roadtrip season (which at this point will go on through the February of 2003 nearly non stop.)
Brian
PS: But DO post here and email our experience coordinators in LA, Twin Cities, ?Nashville, Orange County, NYC, Philly, SF etc... and they'll be happy to help you out.

Guess that question mark next to Nashville is because I've been too busy lately making little bits of money. Sorry, I've not been up to snuff. I will be most happy to answer any questions I can help on. Anytime,. Just be patient with me. Between my newest day job and the shows I've gotten behind in way too many things but I'm still alive. Hey everybody!
We had our first Chapter meeting on Oahu. I must say, although I tried not to have any great expectations, I am a bit disheartened. Only 3 of the 17 contacts showed up. And we are not really on the same page at all.
They say Hawaii is laid back. It ain't no joke!
If anyone can offer advice, please do.
Thanks, ~Mallory

Mallory, we only had 6 show up I think at our first meeting. But it eventually grows. Just hang in there. Spread the word. Get someone to bring a friend. Get the news out to the University. Leave flyers at venues. They will come. Good luck.

Mallory,
Congrats on having your first meeting. If it is any solace, NYC had only 3 people at their first several meetings.. then it jumped to over 30. We had about 200 people come out to the NYC showcases on the Roadtrip. It has to grow. If you have 3 people who are interested in helping the thing grow, that is a great start.
Remember, we started with 60 people 4 years ago and have over 19,000 now. It will happen!
Please keep posting HERE.. we need to get the feedback going!

Okay I started to leave a message about plans for Indianapolis and I got interupted in the middle of and instead of aborting the attempt I left the stupid previous message:-)
Starting over---
Some of you I know and some of you I'm meeting for the first time (best if read in the voice of Dr Evil)
Arminta and I have a once a month open mic we have been running that has kind of turned into people mostly just coming to watch us do our duet and we thought to ourselves (independantly and collectively) Wouldn't this be a cool night to showcase some of the JP Folks members in this area and get some of the musicians that we know that have not already become JP Folks to take the plunge.
Anyway in the last week we have started the ball rolling I talked to Brian (and numerous other people since) and there seems to be a lot of interest in doing both the showcase and starting chapter meetings.
So our first showcase is going to be on Nov 6 at Utopia 924 N Pennsylvania in Indianapolis.
I'm very excited and happy to find a great interest level right off the bat and I'm sure we'll all have a great time in any event.
I'll keep you all posted as this developes and in the meantime keep up the great work.
Peace
Mike

Thanks for the encouragement everybody!
I have a question about what we're doing: Can our goals be too broad? Many of the people interested in JPFolks Oahu are not primarily musicians or songwriters. I realize that multimedia/multiartist venues are inspiring, but should I make an attempt to narrow down the focus? It is difficult sometimes to explain what we are and/or what we are doing.
Thanks, ~Mallory

JPF is for everybody. The showcases are set up for performing songwriters OR for performers performing JPF writers material and certainly for consumers who want to enjoy the great talent that is in our organization.
The Chapter meetings are another thing. This is where everybody who has anything to do with music networks together. It is up to your members to design your own chapter, following JPF guidlines of course. But those are pretty broad. If you have mainly musicians who don't write their own material , send them to the JPF website. We have a lot of material here that they may be interested in. The chapter is a meeting ground for people involved in studio production, sales, A&R, publishing, people who want to be "roadies", a place to have workshops etc. It is anything you want it to be as long as it has to do with music.
In my chapter, we have mostly performers, but we have two people who are into Artist promotion. They are a great asset to our group. I just like composing so I am not interested that much in performing. I have my eye on a couple of artists in my group who, I hope, will do me the favor of performing some of my songs. When I am ready for my CDs to be recorded and my work to be performed and promoted, I know who I can trust to do these things.
Anyway, good luck to you.
JeanB PS: Don't forget to reach out to the University and colleges AND high schools. I imagine there are a lot of young people that would really benefit from the chapter and be an asset as well.

Hi Coordinators!
Here in Albany New York I am working providing a workshop for our next get-together which will incorporate some very talented local songwriters/performers who will hopefully share their songwriting skills/industry and just all around know-how!
I decided to draw from our own chapters' talent and know-how and when that is exhausted, branch out into the wild blue....
in the spirit of forward motion.... I am, Marie

Great idea, Marie! It's exciting to watch our chapters grow and develop. I will be posting some of the things we have covered in our own meetings. Please pass along what you develop and share with us. Congratulations on your chapter's continuing success and as one coordinator to another, thank you for your hard work.
JeanB (Orange County)
PS:
We just had out first showcase and it went very well. I had to actually shoo everybody out of the establishment to make room for the next show. Even then they stood outside the place networking and enjoying themselves. I hope it will boost up the attendance of our next meeting.

Hi Brian and all,
While I'm perusing the boards for ideas, thought I'd check in and say "Hi!" I just took over the Albany, NY coordinator spot and am gearing up for my first meeting. So how many harpers does it take to hold a JPFolks meeting? Hopefully just one...but if I can't quite handle it on my own, I'll be shopping for a co-coordinator soon.
Brian, how you manage all that you do (1/2 of which we probably don't even know about), is beyond me...
Take care, Donna :-)

Hi, Donna!
Great to see you checking in and saying hello. I feel confident that one harper can do it by herself.
That said it never hurts to have 2 coordinators provided they are compatible with each other, to share the load. It's nice to have a backup. I have had to take advantage of that several times myself. Keep us posted and welcome aboard!

Better late than never eh? We are finally having regular meetings in Pittsburgh on the last Thursday of each month and so far have a few regulars with some others coming and going. It's amazing to me how many people email me and complain about where it is or when it is or for that matter why it is...! I took one's advice and moved to a "better location" only to have 2 people show up and get my car keyed... Soooo... I figure we can ride it out where we're at and hopefully focus on the whole networking thing and let people play. Some of this stuff is overwhelming when you try reading it all. There's not enough time in a day, so I look at the basics, getting people to come play and network. Everything else is optional. It's a start, it's fun, and I hope to meet more awesome players from the Pittsburgh area so next time Brian rolls through he has a place to visit.... See ya..!! Mark Hensel

Hey everyone!
I just started things here in South Carolina this summer and I'm working through a variety of local member ideas to make contacts and have "informal" get togethers aside from our regular monthly meetings on every 4th Wednesday of the month.
We have open mics all over the place here. Gigs occuring on almost a daily basis. I have a few active members who participate in these or know the performers and/or managers at the venues and they are getting our chapter known in the local Columbia SC area.
In Greenville, Charleston and Myrtle Beach, I'm encouraging the same. We e-mail each other with open mic dates and gigs to support each other and build the group.
We've had what I'd say were very productive meetings, with someone new bringing in new ideas or helping to expand the current ones each time. I was unable to attend my last meeting but I've got such a great core membership that it practically ran itself.
I'd love to hook up with the members and coordinators in North Carolina and Georgia to do the same. Swapping gigs and open mics is doing well here on a small scale. Networking really works for us.
I'm more than happy to share my successes with any startup coordinators like myself as well as soaking in the info from the established ones. As Brian says, WERE ALL IN THIS TOGETHER!

Hey, this is Lacy from the Louisville area. I need ideas from other coordinators on stimulating interest. I know people here can not be THAT apathetic. Big up to Lexington, KY. I heard you represented KY well during the tour stop.
