Of interest to songwriters, bands, producers, managers and anyone else interested in understanding the basics of music publishing from both a creative and business perspective. Topics demystified include: how to get a publishing deal; what publishers look for in a hit song and songwriter, copyright basics; how co-writers divide percentages in a composition; when the producer gets credit; protecting your compositions (PA and SR forms); what publishing companies can do for your career (song-plugging, advances, recording deals and marketing funds); types of deals (exclusive, co-publishing, administration and sub-publishing); getting paid (mechanicals, performance, synch, print and foreign monies); self-publishing and establishing your own publishing company; understanding organizations (ASCAP, BMI, SESAC and Harry Fox); utilizing music libraries and resource guides; and investigating placement opportunities 2005 and beyond (film, TV, games, advertising, corporate videos and DVD featurettes.
