Yeah, Seven Nation Army I think is his best work. I don't think he's as unique as you think creatively. I hear a LOT of artists who are as diverse but simply weren't able to break through. And he was "known" for being different and he hung his hat on it and rode that wave well, though he's been quiet of late as far as I am aware. In other words, in my opinion, he had the right gimmick, the goods to deliver it to popularity and he rode that wave for quite a while. He also played the media game VERY well and used his outlaw from the norm mantra well. He's as smart a business man and marketer as he is a musician. And he's cool. Until he isn't and people move on. The real question to ask is what is the next marketable gimmick and who has the multi talent chops to deliver? Many have the artistic talents, few have the business/marketing chops. Some have the latter and are so good, they can cram any garbage down the masses throats and they gobble it up. He actually had talent and mad business chops. That is the rarity, not simply the musical talent.
By the way, thanks for sharing those links. That Lazeretto video I think should have won all the best video of the year awards. It was super low budget (very youtube-ish) but super cool and the director had a real talent to build tension, release it within the video both in sync and contra to the music. Even if you're not into the style of music, the video brilliantly portrays the attitude and edge. Any college student with editing software and a talented musician could have made that video, minus the cost of the sports car rental. heh.
