6 LOCAL ROCK BANDS UNITE TO FIGHT LEUKEMIA
Six local rock bands will perform to raise money for the Leukemia Research Foundation on Saturday, January 5th, 2008 at Subterranean (2011 W. North Ave.), starting at 7 pm. The 4th annual winter wingding 2008 "Winter Wingding 2008" will feature some of Chicago's favorite bands, the Commodes, the Polkaholics, the Locals, the New Duncan Imperials, Smile Say Hello and the Long Gone Lonesome Boys. Although Leukemia is a serious disease that affects family members young and old, the benefit show showcases bands that are perhaps better known for their sense of humor. The Polkaholics are notorious for their amusing mix of punk and polka that really gets you off your seat and onto the dance floor. The Commodes follow the same footsteps as their comic-rock peers with "trucker-influenced" novelty originals. The New Duncan Imperials have amazed crowds around the globe with their high energy live shows for over 10 years and continue to perform cleverly written songs that they call "trash rock." While not as comical as the other bands on the bill, the Locals are a loud and fast female-fronted acoustic band inspired by No Doubt, Ani Difranco, Elvis Costello, and the Pretenders. The Long Gone Lonesome Boys bring back country music's roots with their style of western swing and rockabilly. Smile Say Hello are a group of young guys whose brand of rock sounds as if they have played together for years. Subterranean is one of Chicago's favorite music venues for emerging original artists. Located in the heart of Chicago, Subterranean is a hotspot for up-and-coming acts like the Redwalls and the Killers as well as nationally-recognized masters like Junior Brown.
Proceeds from ticket sales go to the Leukemia Research Foundation, whose offices are in Glenview, Illinois. Their mission is to conquer leukemia, lymphoma, and myelodysplastic syndromes by funding research into their causes and cures, and to enrich the quality of life of those touched by these diseases.
