I was listening to Richard Thompson's "Vincent Black Lightning" and was inspired by the pace of the song.
Although a totally different theme, this song came from that.
You can listen on either of these links.

Thanks all. Vic

Running through the fire © 2018 Vic Arnold

There's an old man in ragged clothes
in this uptown neighbourhood
Some folks turn and whisper,
"he must be up to no good".
Acts a little crazy now and then
when someone stares.
Not someone you'd mess with
any time or anywhere.
Ch.
"Running, running, through the blood and mire.
Running, running, running through the fire."

I said, "Hey old man what'ya doing here
in this fancy part of town?
I don't mind at all
but there ain't many like you around."
Then I looked him in the eye
and recognised a dear old friend
I said "It's been a long long while
How've you come to such an end?".

He said:
"Running, running, through the blood and mire.
Running, running, running through the fire."

"I was in the army but
I lost it in the head
Now I can't hold a job down
so I've come to you to beg.
I'm sorry about this look
but my situation's dire
and you'd be looking dirty too
if you'd been through the fire".

Running, running, through the blood and mire.
Running, running, running through the fire

Br
He said:
"Now I'm little short on swagger. A little short on style
My hair is growing straggly and my thoughts are turning wild
When you and I were buddies. We walked high on the wire
but there's no net for safety
when you're running, running through the fire".
Ch.

I like this, Vic. A good write and nice production.

(Saw Richard Thompson as the opening act for Jason Isbell a few months ago...)

This one is definitely a cut above. I like the pace and I like the lyric, especially the verse starting:
"I was in the army but...

Good job, Vic!

Hi Vic

What a great powerful soundtrack you've created - high energy. And your lead character's dire situation is expertly conveyed through your lyric. Cool chords and melody in the chorus as well.

Much appreciated.

Thanks Mike.
Unfortunately I no longer have a "rock" voice. Probably never did, but I tried to make it energetic.
Glad it came through for you.

Well done Vic. Good stuff. I get the Vinvent Black Lightining influence. I really enjoyed it. Loved the tempo. the song just moved from start to finish perfectly. Loved the guitar work. The vocal is always tops in my book. Nothing not to like.

This has a great feel to it, Vic. You need energy to keep "running through the fire" so this is the perfect tempo for it...I think slower would have taken something away. Well written lyric too. Nicely done all around.

Hi Dave.
Thank you for that. Probably more the Sean Rowe version than Richard Thompson.

Thanks Ricki.
As you say, it had to be fast. In fact it's almost to fast for me to strum.
I've slowed down over the years. :-)

Good to know Richard Thompson inspired this one Vic i've been a fan of his since his Fairport Convention days.
A good song with an interesting story which move along at a pace very much in line with a couple of Waylon songs as well.
Yes enjoyed it
Good luck with it

Thanks Travis.

I introduced a bit of Waylon into it too, as you observed.

Vic,

I really admire the production on this one—particularly your use of percussion, which really pops on this tune, and especially the electric guitars in the chorus. Nice story and good hook. It’s a good one. Enjoyed my listen as usual.

All the best,

A wonderful write, Vic and as always your performance is stunning.
And that groove___ well done, indeed.

I really enjoyed the way you deployed the electric guitar in the chorus.

Yep, it does have a hint of the Waylon vibe...nice.

Vincent Black Lightening is one of our favorite songs...particularly the bluegrass version by The Del McCoury Band so that made it easy to fall into this song.

The whole write, vocal and arrangement is strong but we particularly liked the bridge.

Kudos!!

Thank you J&B.
Can't beat a bit of Waylon.
