Here's a new old one-- might be likeable

Names

There used to be this bully on my way home from school
He taunted me called me names, sometimes he would throw stones
One day I picked up a Hickory stick, Put that bully on the run
I never let anyone call me names until you came along

chorus 1

You called me Darling and I must admit that took me by surprise
Never had anyone call me that, no one with such big brown eyes
And I will love you for forever, that's one thing that will never change
You called me Darling and I want you to know, I love the way you call me names

v2

Years go by in the blink of an eye, God bless our family
Seems like only yesterday I was buying your diamond ring
Now honey I hear the baby crying I'll go and see what's wrong
Think you'd better come here quick, she's trying to say something

chorus 2

She called me Daddy, it's a miracle, that took me by surprise
Never had anyone call me that, no one with such big brown eyes
And I will love her for forever, that's one thing that will never change
She called me Daddy and for the rest of my life, Daddy's gonna be my name

Bridge

And if someday, some brown-eyed boy says,"Grandpa is there a Santa Claus?"
I will smile through tears of joy and know I got my name because...

Repeat Chorus 1

Outro
There used to be this bully on my way home from school

thanks Lane- probably too clever for my own good, I actually have another version of this where he dies and goes to the Pearly Gates and an angel calls him "beloved" (his new name) and so on. Anyway thank you for the note.

Hi Pete:

I enjoyed my listen. Noted it has existed since 2004, then read your reply to Lane about another version. Many of us "explore" our own work and attempt different versions. I consider that a good thing. Sometimes it works and sometimes it takes us down a path to nowhere. Thanks for sharing and best of luck with your music. ----Dave

Hi Pete.

Nice old fashioned classic country tune for sure! Nice evolving story. Production-wise, I'd reduce the volume on the snare rim shots during the verses a wee bit-JMO. Like the return to the beginning at the end!

thanks Dave - Your comment on versions got me thinking about how other art forms reshape their creative ideas, old masters would add paint to their canvases over many years in some cases, film directors re-edit their hits. Some old favorite songs have verses that are no longer sung for various reasons. I like both versions of this tune - this one is more mainstream. ,,,Pete

Hi Pete,

What a great hook--and the way you set it up with the bully in V1 was totally unexpected and refreshing. and you carry out the overriding idea (of being called names) wonderfully to the end. The song has a kind of Millsap or Twitty sweetness to it but would do well in any era I bet.

Thanks Eddie, I think you're just a wee bit right on those rim shots. Your last comment has my mind going in circles. Ah Dios! .....Pete

What a well written song Pete and a lovely performance.

I think your vocal delivery is powerful and fits the song perfectly.

Nicely done! That's well put together. The "call me names" concept and the switch from negative to positive. The melodic lift as you hit the chorus is really strong and puts the emphasis there in the chorus as it should be. I'm less sure you need to return to the opening lines in the outro - I think the story has moved on from there, but that's a minor point. Well done.

"Two Thumbs Up!" you created quite a story here and the images are beautiful. Good use of the hook and the opening line.

That's a great idea for a lyric Pete! Nice one. Wish I'd have thought of that.

Music is a good fit - meaning country smile

Thought I heard clipping on the vocals now and then. No one else mentioned it though so it might have been my buds.
