Southern Breakfast - 09/20/16 11:10 PM

I was having fun one night and uploaded this quick idea that Kjell accepted. It's got re-do's and work to go, and real backup coming (hopefully a better singer too). Had a few beers and made a tribute to my 93 year old mam'ma (Grandma in northern speak) Ruth. She can't cook anymore, but boy could she.

Southern Breakfast

Tennessee here I come
I should make it there by dawn
Mam'ma said; she'd have food a waitin
and a pot of coffee on

Her biscuits and gravy, are pure heaven to me,
not to mention, the hot grits, hash browns, eggs over easy
She's the queen of the southern breakfast
the hollers Rachael Ray, but in her southern way
That mornin masterpiece, that's waitin for me
Has made my stomach start to growl
My taste buds scream at me, yellin that their hungry
They want some southern breakfast now

Indiana's far behind me
Maybe I'll go back someday
I highly doubt it. no doubt about it
the south cooks things my mam-ma's way

Her biscuits and gravy, are pure heaven to me,
not to mention, the hot grits, hash browns, eggs over easy
She's the queen of the southern breakfast
the hollers Rachael Ray, but better in her southern way
That mornin masterpiece, that's waitin for me
Has made my stomach start to growl
My taste buds scream at me, yellin that their hungry
They want some southern breakfast now

Steppin on the front porch
the scent reaches me
I know behind that door,
there's biscuits and gravy ,and eggs over easy
Mam'ma hugs me and fills up my plate
It's as I recall, the best thing I've ever ate

I love her southern breakfast

Hi James:

You are right. The vocal is a little "submerged in the mix" but I can sure relate to the song. My Grandmother could make a breakfast to "die for" and her baking was exquisite.

I think Kjell did a fantastic job creating the backing music and you have a really good start on this song. Best wishes for success and I hope you'll keep grinding away at this one.

All the best, ----Dave

I like the subject and you have a lot of good ideas here. One thing you need to do in the re work is to take out words where you are sayingtomuchtoofast to fit with the music. Saying more with less is the true essence of a good song.

Cute lyric idea, James and the music gives it a good home. A solid foundation to build on.

Hey James,

Really enjoyed this. Excellent write. I don't think you give yourself enough credit on that vocal. I thought it was pretty good with the inflections all in the right place. It had me slappin' my knee. Excellent lyric and the perfect instrumentation to suit it. Nice job. Look forward to the finished product.

James,

Your happy groove makes me want to visit your mamma and amybe get in on some of that breakfast..:>)... I liked the whole meal you've served up....thought the vocals weren't in the same room with the instruments...I'd tinker with the mix a bit...Ah, I just realized this is work in progress....Well Done!

Hi James,

The reverb makes it hard to make out too much of the lyric. Maybe try a mix with a more upfront vocal. But I love this lyric; it's got a Greg Brown down-home-ness to it, reminding me a little of his classic "Canned Goods."

This is a really a fun song, well put together and with great potential. smile
