a couple years ago I went to the race track. In between 2 of the horse races, they had a weenie dog race. When you're watching a bunch of weenie dogs running along you can't help but smile. When the race was done, I sat down. I noticed that many of the other people were still standing and pointing yelling 'c’mon, c’mon' and children were jumping up and down and pointing. I got up to see what I had missed, and saw a weenie dog with lame hind legs propped up in this harness with wheels. He was pulling himself along with just his front legs. Even though it was a good minute after the other dogs had finished, when this dog on wheels rolled across the finish line the crowd went nuts. They were cheering twice as loud as they had for the winning dog or any other horse race they watched that day.

That inspired me to make up a story which became this song.

I have a tune for the song I am trying to record. My guitar playing and singing are not cooperating. In the mean time, here are the lyrics.

Roll Along Little Doggie
Copyright 2012 David Hunkins

The runt of the liter was weak and sick and lame
Jim took him anyway and chose Chester as his name
The dauchshund wouldn’t last long according to the Vet
But the dog’s heart knew his time was not done yet.

When it was clear the hind legs never would be right
Jim worked in his workshop on a harness every night
When he oiled the wheels, adjusted straps and carefully fit it on
Chester raced around the house until the break of dawn

(Chorus)

Roll along Little doggie
Roll along Little Friend
A life’s not measured by the ribbons
But how hard you try until you reach the end.

The next year chester ran his first weenie dog race
The crowd gave quite a cheer for the dog that won first place
Then louder yells and louder cheers and children’s delighted squeals
When Chester rolled across with his hind legs propped on wheels

Through the years chester raced many times more
And every time he ran the crowd would cheer and roar
He mostly fineshed near to last, but a couple times actually won
But chester didn’t care, cuz he just loved to run.

(bridge)
So much time and worry deciding who is first
Who’s the best, who’s the rest, who’s last and who is worst
There’s wisdom in a brave dog’s heart that could ease the minds of man
There is just only one true best, and that’s the best you can.

(repeat chorus)

Some evenings Jim would be working late, and chester was alone
So he got another dachshound and brought it home
She had sleeky fur and floppy ears, and the biggest deep brown eyes
Later she was due with pups much to Jim’s surprize

Jim worried that the pups, might inherit a lame trait
But the pups were born just fine, long, and strong, and straight
Some evenings jim have to laugh, as he sat and watched it all
While chester and his pups raced up and down the hall.

(repeat chorus)

I am a fan of little dogs. They don't know their small.
This song shows off their character.
Well written dogs tale.:)

It's never too late? Yes it is, so do it now.

If, given time, a monkey can write the complete works of Shakespeare maybe there's hope for me.

What a charming - in fact, quite moving - lyric. smile
