This is another one from my Kingdom City project. smile

It's a sequel of sorts to "Willie's Gone to Ground" and it unites brothers Frank and Billy (We're Gonna Rob the Supermart Tonight) with Javier, the undocumented immigrant who came north in "El Norte".

I've been trying to write these as independent songs. But I'm getting close to the end and can't resist making some explicit ties between songs on the remaining few.

I'm saying all this because, while I think this one can stand alone up to the last verse, the last verse and outro will definitely have people scratching their heads if they haven't heard the other songs. No need to comment on that aspect - I'm already aware of it. smile

Any comments on any other aspects are appreciated. "We're Gonna Come Out Ahead on this Deal" is here:

http://www.soundclick.com/bands/page_songInfo.cfm?bandID=377550&songID=12043762

I'll stick the lyric below. Thanks!

Scott

We’re Gonna Come Out Ahead on this Deal
(c) 2012 by S.W. Campbell

Frankie says, “Wake up Billy”,
“I got a piece of the Holy Grail”
“There’s an abandoned home that the city owns”
“And they’re putting it up for sale”
“It needs a new bathroom floor”
“They’ll give us two hundred bucks for what I’m sure”
“Is but a couple hours of work”
“Then we can buy them new fishing reels”
“Something tells me we’re gonna come out ahead on this deal”

Frankie says “You get started”
“I’ll come over when I’ve had me a nap”
But when he wakes an hour later, there’s Billy in his waders
Practicing his side arm cast
He says, “Billy, why are you still here?”
Billy says, “I got Junie’s friend Javier”
“To do it for a hundred bucks”
“We’ll make a hundred just for kicking our heels”
“You can thank me now we’re gonna come out ahead on this deal”

Now Javier’s a helluva a worker
But his English skills are kinda poor
He didn’t quite understand when Billy waved his hand
And said, “You gotta pull up this floor”
So when he has all the tiles pried loose
He grabs a sledge and puffing like a charging moose
He takes it to the concrete slab
In a cloud of whirling steel
Starting to doubt he’s gonna come out ahead on this deal

Not long after Javi punches through to earth
He stops to cross himself
While Frank and Billy, just arrived,
Stand there open mouthed
Looking in the hole at a head, a foot
And some other body parts
Frankie sighs, “There’s so much here wrong”
“I don’t even know where to start”

The sheriff says, “Which of you Bubbas”
“Found that body buried there?”
Well from years of habit as the first to rabbit
Billy blurts, “It was Javier”
The sheriff stares Javi down
Says, “Willie’s Mama’s glad that he’s finally found”
“You mighta heard there’s a big reward”
“Well I’m here to say it’s real”
“Looks like Javier’s coming out ahead on this deal”

Scott, This is a real jaunty and well-written addition to the Kingdom City CD. A real toe-tapper and smile maker. I loved the dialogue at the end. The lyrics and music performance are what I've come to expect from you. My only question is when is NPR going to wise up and feature you on All Songs Considered??

Haha!! Man I love it Scott. It certainly stands by itself as I can't remember the stories behind all the other songs but the irony is perfect at the end. I can't wait to hear them all together as a whole, in proper order. You've far surpassed me in writing a whole concept work. Still don't know where mine is leading. I've got three different ideas but nothing much to show for it in concrete form. You should try and get the whole project on college radio stations as well as NPR. I think it would prove to be quite popular. You might even go to the English dept of your school and see if they'd like to play the whole thing as part of a creative writing course to use as an example. You won't make money but you'll get it out there for people to appreciate which is what both of us, in our separate ways are looking for.

No, no, no -- don't listen to those guys up above. I see a TV pilot for a show called "The Mayor of Kingdom City". There really are enough characters and story lines to easily pull off a few seasons, at least. I can be your promoter, and yea, I'm gonna come out ahead on this deal.

Super, duper stuff.

Another huge step on this amazing journey, Scott.
Excellent story idea and execution/write.

I must say the piano runs are very tasty treats.
The arrangement is lusciously full and the mix is, as usual, top notched and full of energy.

I am, as always... G W E(Green with envy).

Merry Christmas Scott

Just like we have always been told about all things Campbell, this song is MMM MMM Good!

I've been meaning to tell you this for a while Scott, when I write I try to channel John Prine (My favorite writer). When Steve and I were writing Mad Maddy, I was channeling Scott Campbell. I think you are a great song writer. When I listen to one of your songs I always feel like the guy that's found it while everyone else is still searching.

Thanks for sharing your talent with me!

Cheers
Paul

I think there is probably as much chance of that happening as Frank and Billy hitting the lotto, Dan smile

Thanks Stevie:

Hey, three ideas are better than none! The path will sort itself out when you least expect it. smile

I'm glad this worked for you as a stand alone piece. Didn't expect that but I'm glad it does.

I have one more in mind and that will probably be it. I had an idea for a second one that would take place 20 years or so after these but I think I'll leave that one go. Once the last one is written, that will decide the final order and I'll put all of them up in order.

Thanks so much for your encouragement on this smile

I dunno - maybe I ought to write one for the CD with zombies in it - that might make it fly for TV smile

Thanks Nelson - that's one of my favorite lines smile

Glad it had some energy for you. Believe it or not I recorded almost the whole thing a key lower and a few BPM slower before I ended up trashing it and starting over. Just didn't have any energy smile

Scott...

You are an entertainer's entertainer! No one tells a story like you! That's some damned fine work!

Interesting yiou mentioned about writing a novel...just had my first major publication a couple of months ago. it was quite a thrill to see my book on Amazn.com the first time!

In an interview, I was asked how I got into writing novels. My answer is probably vbery appropriate to your musical works. I said, "I've been a songwriter and composer for many years. One day it dawned on me that the lyric of a song is actually a novel in a hundred words or less. I just filled in some blank spots and suddenly I had a real book!"

I think you know i used to live less than an hour from Kingdom City, MO. It's a place that always brings two thoughts to mind when I hear or see the name: 1. it's an unusual name. 2. the Taco bell there at the intersection of Interstate 70 and Highway 54 is the only one in Missouri where you can still get green sauce on your burritos!

Very nice work, my friend...very nice! All the best to you & Gwen...

Scott,

Just love it, love all of the twists and turns and characters. I think it would be so cool to write a book with this story and have it come with the cd of songs of the story, that would be such an interesting thing and very creative. I'm so happy you keep going on with this, it is fascinating!

Thanks John smile

Well, there's a male grifter who's evolving, a female grifter who's devolving, a stripper who finds a cupid, a lotto winner who's gone missing, an immigrant who rode some pretty rough rails to get here and is trying his best to make sense of things, a couple of brothers who are either skirting or tripping on the law, a drinking priest and a former nun who's pretty hot. I think that about covers it smile

Glad you liked smile

Hey Al!

Yes, I knew you lived near there and, yes, I agree it's an unusual name. Must have been - it's really stuck with me.

Did not know about the green sauce. Good info. I go through that intersection once or twice a year.

That's very cool about your book. Just went over to Amazon and read an excerpt from it. You certainly got my curiosity up! smile

Thanks for the compliments on this!

Thanks Tammy. One more to go, I think smile

It's a lot of fun smile

The thought of a book appeals but it seems like work grin

Yea tiz cool work there Scotty...As you know I'm like music first then lyrics smile

Love how you add another piece per verse and build up to some very cool harp solo.

Vocals and lyric story...well shades of Garrison Keeler...

Love it! tom

Thanks Tom smile

I started doing that "one addition per verse" thing in an attempt to distract from the fact that I was writing verse after verse with no chorus. That and insisting on keeping the songs under 4 minutes. It's no substitute for having a catchy chorus but it probably helps smile
