Hey All,

I thought I would get on, and put some work into a feature film script I've been working on the last couple of years.

Along with the script, I have to put together a music sample mix ( it's a film with music, not a musical, think The Blues Brothers ) but more importantly, a budget.

I've downloaded the template from here ... http://www.screenaustralia.gov.au/filmmaking/budgeting/a_z.aspx but, oh boy, is it complicated.

Would anyone have any experience in this field ? Or alternatively, got the time to have a quick look ? It's a 926k download in Excel format. The summary can be found by pressing the "budget" tab at the bottom.

I guess what they are saying is, "if you don't know all this stuff, then you're not ready to present a script".

Any thoughts would be most appreciated. *shaking head in dis-belief*

cheers, niteshift

Geoff, I would think what you wrote about not ready for that yet might apply. BUT, if you can find others who have done such things, that might help. I will see if I can put you in touch with the secretary for a Hollywood director, to maybe get some kind of a guideline. But man,,,a feature? Why not a short film first, to then enter in all the film festivals. That way, being a short film, it will be included a lot faster and at more festivals. The two I scored played all over the US and even in Public TV in one state. The director and writer were able to build off of those successes to do more work and so on.

Less money to put out too. Less expectations as well, which allows for much leeway in the short film market of at least the festivals. Many college students enter their shorts in them, and some go on after college, based on that experience. Why try to climb over your own experience? That might be a setup for learning the hard way. Trust me on that! I did that with trying to make two song releases to medium and major market radio. OUCH! Still hurts when I sit.

Like Mike Appel, who is working on his musical, to hopefully take it to Broadway. By doing smaller things before, and actually Broadway once with a decent hit, he knows all the what's where's, when's why's, who's and costs, starting with the first steps through completion. A MAJOR undertaking, to know all the steps, and what to expect for the costs.

Baby steps! Also, like on here, when someone will ask how to copyright their song, for they want sell their hit to the world! That was me before this site! Man,,,and I still made mistakes with the radio promotion dream. I forget to be awake and do all the baby steps.

Het Johnny,

Yeah, I'm hearing you mate.

Thing is, I've been to London and studied script writing. I've done the short films. I've done the "lets all be poor and be creative" type stuff. I've been on the tele and sat in numourus green rroms, I've been to the parties, and all the rest of it.

BUT..... I was always the paid talent. In other words, you just showed up and did your piece.

The other side of it, is that, how does all this work ? I don't have an answer for that, but what I do know, is that folks want you to have an overall understanding of how it works.

As a script writer ( in this case ) I'm out of my depth. But, hopefully someone will be able to fill me in.

Yeah John, I've got a hard road, but one that I'm willing to try, because my background tells me to do so.

Heaven help me !

cheers. niteshift

Ahh, Nite, Nite, Nite...You're shaking you're head so hard I can hear the rocks rattling:-)....If you're going to produce the film yourself, then yeah, the budget is a necessity. But if you're looking to find a production company, then you're worrying needlessly.

ALL "THEY" WANT is a killer script, budget be damned!

Either way, get thee to the Forums here: http://donedealpro.com/default.aspx

Lots of fellow Aussies hanging out:-)

I'll chime in more later, but I've been on the back porch since 6:00 & my singers are starting to go numb.

Happy New Years Mate! Tossed any good thongs lately?

Hey Midnite,

Hehehehhe..... yeah, kinda crazy huh ? The reason for the budget is that it is one way of getting inital funding, in this case government funding, so it has to be done. Never mind about a great script and all that.. beauracrats LOVE paperwork.

Produce it myself ? Nope, ya gotta be kidding. That would be like a poet... who thinks he's a lyricist... who thinks he can get a song demoed at Paramount..... then sell it to a big star.. and then get a Grammy and make lots of money. Possible, but highly remote.

The idea is to team up with a producer and director, and see what happens. Problem is, it's a film with music ( not a musical ) so, I need someone like Baz Lurman, with a younger Hugh Jackman as the lead.

What a dreamer huh ? That's Ok, I wrote my first stage musical about 15 yrs ago, and it was a terrible failure. They say you've always got to write a stinker first, to learn how to write, so I'm well on the way to a padded cell. grin

Thanks for the links, very informative.

Oh, and this....

Good grief ! When did the producers' couch move to the back porch ???!!! eek wink

Thanks mate, good advice, and I'll keep reading your notes.

cheers, niteshift

Ahh...So it IS related to Government funding. I know several writers who've talked about moving there simply because the Aussie Government is so movie friendly.

Good luck!!...If I come across any tips, I'll pass 'em on.

Midnite

P.S....The back porch is where the hot tub is----I WISH

P.P.S....I know a very talented young Hugh Jackman look-a-like with an extensive acting and music background who you could get for the cost of air-fare and beer money...Lemme know if it get's that far and I'll track him down:-)
