Hey guys,
This thought just popped into my head after reading from a thread I started about different types of Songwriting Strategies, people found themselves in.
Polly, commented about writing when 'Inspiration' hit's her, and couldn't relate to how some write by appointment:) So it made me ask the Question..
Do you lead with 'Inspiration' or by what I would call 'Motivation' (By appointment, or alone)at a specific time. when approaching your songs? I expect it could be a bit of both, but it would be great to see which method most here use:)
I was hit by 'Inspiration' the other day while doing 'Dishes' I so NOT wanted to Do! lol But I'm so thankful I did them because, I think I might have written one my strongest songs ever!
So, who wins out? -Dana

Perspiration brings out the inspiration, which brings out the motivation, then comes the aspiration, effectuation and implementation. Finally maybe the Californication or Nashvilliation.

Hard work trumps luck so motivation more than inspiration.

Being always inspired, or damn close to it at down times, (what's a down time?), inspiration brings on motivation, which brings on more inspiration and so on.
I see it "all" as a non stop intertwining circle of stuff going on, even when one might think there's nothing going on upstairs in me.
If the incredible happenstance of being alive isn't enough to get any juices flowing, DESPITE what ya got going on, then one's wake plans should already be in progress. Otherwise, have EVERYTHING else be in PROGRESS! That's Inspiration meets Motivation!
The switch should already be on and staying on since day one of banging on an empty Quaker Oats Box to get drum sounds! Otherwise, one may be battling themselves, and may need to find their real calling.
Passion = Inspiration = Motivation. Or else it's crap! (Inspired by Big Jim)! I was motivated to say that, from having passion.

i find that you have to have inspiration to come up with good songs and motivation to come up with the drive to get the inspiration so therefore i thnk both are important and without one or the other writers block could be in your near future
im a country songwriter i also write hip hop but im focused on country right now ive won awards for poems since i was very yound my mom still has my first ever poem saved im a great writer alot of heart looking to get into the buisness with a bang

Hey Ashland VA. I lived in Herndon for 20 years!
Anyway, for me its inspiration which sparks the motivation. Once I’m inspired, I’m in a zone. I’ve been known to go days without sleep just working on a song. Then I crash and burn.

And here is just one song that IGGY spoke about, with him burning the midnight and all other oils to write this GREAT song he kindly put in Sub's and my hands to produce and play on. OUR pleasure, this signature Iggy number with the message of great devotion. Sub and I were certainly inspired with the first FEEL of the chords and singing Iggy played for us from his simple home demo. Chills! He said we did good. If so, it was from being inspired and motivated all at once! Not thinking about this or that way of doing things. But just reacting to the song itself, letting the feel dictate what we should play and how it should be produced, to be in sync with THE SONG. Here's our inspired production of the Iggy inspired song for his wife: "I DO" http://soundclick.com/share.cfm?id=11384343

Hi Dana:
Please consider this as more of my cockeyed humor. You bring up an almost unanswerable question... LOL! Which came first, "The Chicken or the Egg?"
IMHO, both elements of your question are paramount ingredients. It isn't enough to be inspired... ya' hafta' do something with that great song idea. All the blood, sweat and tears in the world will go absolutely nowhere without the spark of inspiration. If you happen to have a spare bushel of inspiring song ideas, I know a few folks at JPF who'd jump at them.
All the best, always...
Dave

Forgive me for "hi-jacking" your thread, Dana... but I need to respond to Johnny, Iggy and Sub's Song Collab. Iggy, no doubt this comes from the heart. So well written. Sub and Johnny, great job. The song has tremendous potential. My best wishes for success against such madly long odds. Regardless, I hope to hear it on my radio sometime soon. It has a "Beatlesque" vibe to it in places... and to me, that is a real good thing.
Nice!
Dave

I think they go hand in hand. Being disciplined to set aside the time to write opens up the opportunity for inspiration to hit. Every single one of my cuts has been an appointment write that turned into an inspired write.

I have read this dissertation Gave it great consideration To deliver explanation of my songs Do they stem from inspiration Or arrive from motivation Both I’d say, but either way, it’s never wrong If you asked entire nations Over very long durations From which station they would write their work of art You would find a variation In received communication But a song's foundation starts with that first spark!!!!
