It’s so good to have you home ©2012 MIKE PARRISH
Verse One Coming home from the Gulf after a couple of tours My dad sent me a message and said, “This town is yours” And he was really thrilled about the parade they’d planned But all I could think of was when he came back from Nam He had earned a purple heart and won a silver star With no one there to greet him he limped on to a bar And in that smoky bar room he raised his glass alone Toasted himself saying, “It’s so good to have you home.”
Chorus One It’s so good to have you home Yeah, we know where you have been Sorry about the welcome But we’ve lost so many friends It’s so good to have you home And we’re sure they’ll come a day When time has healed these wounds And we’ll have a big parade
Verse Two So I convinced the mayor and everyone agreed Dad should be riding up on that float with me We didn’t let him know until I got off the bus And said, “Welcome home soldier, this parade's for us” We passed the cheering crowds an a tear ran down his face He embraced the welcome that was several decades late That night with all our friends and war buddies on the phone We offered up this cheer; “It’s so good to have you home.”
Chorus Two It’s so good to have you home Yeah we know where you have been It’s time we had that welcome For our long forgotten friend It’s so good to have you home So today became the day That time had healed the wounds And we had that big parade

I got drafted in 72 - too late to go to Nam thank God - but I felt the sting of the lack of support - good think it has changed now.

HiYa Mike!
Admirable Effort Here, Amigo!
Dunno What to Say...2013's the 50th Anniversary of Ground Troops bein' sent to Vietnam/...I've yet to join in any Parades.
When I got back from the Year in Pleiku, via Oakland, took a busride over the Golden Gate to get to see the Haight-Ashbury District, buy a pair of Bell-Bottoms, & get to know America again. Got lost/was very Impressed by the Locals wantin' to assist a lost serviceman. (Wasn't expecting any Smiles, truth be told.) Been fond of Californians ever-since.
Cleveland, where I Volunteered, finally DID have a "Welcome-Home" Parade, 20 years-After. Just didn't feel thrilled-enough to attend, though I was in the vicinity. (I'd hitchhiked to the Pentagon, got my orders changed from MD to Heidelberg GY/Spent the next 5 yrs in Europe, then, as war was ending, returned Stateside..in '73...Florida!)
Finally got the courage to see The Wall last year...&...yeah, maybe NOW I'm ready for a Parade...Won't be THIS Vet's Day, but Maybe Next.
Fine Song...& Good Luck with it, Amigo! Best Wishes to You & Dad, Stan

Mike, That's a good story and an appropriate contribution on Veterans Day.

"If one man can do it, any man can do it. It is true. But the real question is, if one man did it, are you willing to do what it takes to do it as well?" –Brian Austin Whitney
