Hi Everett

I use the online and I don't think there is a maximum, providing they follow the rules.

here is the link to the facts sheet

http://www.copyright.gov/eco/faq.html

I think the sixth one down is what you want

Great as you only pay the one fee $35 for the lot, as long as you upload them at the same time/sitting, so everything has to be prepared.

I slightly edited the title as I think this is a great question and others may want to see it. Thanks Ev.

USED to be ALL Ya could cram onto One Cassette/Now's prolly ALL Ya can put on One CD. (Tho if they're accepting Data Chips...I'd guess The Sky's The Limit?) Does have to have some "Continuity" to make it "A Collection"...like ONE Author (Words..OR..Music) being Credited with creating The Collection.

That's the way I understand it...

But, been ages since I sent a check & Cassette off to them.

i would also like to know if it's best to wait till you have the complete songs, both lyric and music or is it okay to copywrite one or the other,as i am mostly a lyricist. Then would you have to re-copywrite after you add the music/lyrics?What a pain, huh?

Hi Michael

everything is IMO

I hope this isn’t too long-winded lol

Lets see. You can register separate lyrics and then the music at a later date, but in that case, you would have to pay twice.

Basically what you upload in a sitting and pay for, cannot be changed or added to on THAT APPLICATION. Each Application stands on its own content.

Like you I am a lyrics only person and I have found that some composers whom I have co-written with), don't want to copyright their material via the copyright office, that's fine with me, as the lyrics are my main concern.

I still copyright every song (lyrics) that I feel has real merit and to be honest (with the composers permission) I USUALLY INCLUDE THE MUSIC IN THE APPLICATION (with their name), because it costs no extra for me at that time.

How to do it electronically…

You go here https://eco.copyright.gov/eService_enu/start.swe?SWECmd=Start&SWEHo=eco.copyright.gov

And register yourself… you can use any user name and add your password.

What I have done is to set up three templates.
1. Has all my details for when I don’t have any co-writers
2. Has two persons details for when I have a single co-writer
3. Has three persons for that situation.

So all I do is login and select the template, and change whatever details need changing for the co-writer/s if needed or for the song title and date etc.

It is important to have everything prepared, and in a folder, with file names that give a clue as to what each file is. Ie. The song title and lyrics or music.

Once you have gone through each section and filled everything in, you will be asked to pay. After payment has been accepted, you will be given the chance to list everything you want to upload and where it is located on your computer as a file.

So, first I select the lyrics then I have to put a line in that describes what ‘the lyrics is’ for example, without quote marks, etc.

“lyrics document for “blar blar blar” written by “blar blar blar 2012-11-02

Then I select the finished song as a mp3 file that goes with those lyrics and also put in what it is, for example

For example. Without the quote marks.

“music in mp3 file” for “blar blar blar” composed by “blar blar blar 2012-11-02

Once everything for that application is listed then I press upload and it will happen.

If I make a mistake in any file I have pointed to, then too bad, I would have to pay again for another application.

If I was registering a heap of material on the one application, (the application would need a name for a collection (Roys collection CD1 – or – Roys songs from 2012 ) for example, and every lyric sheet and music file would have to be pointed to, and each would have a short description, before I press the upload button.

So in that case, being prepared is most important. Miss a file and its tough.

With myself, because I make music videos as well, and I want to protect the content of the video and images used in the video, I always upload the lyrics, music track and music video, as that is acceptable by the copyright office.

May not actually help in the long run, but its better than nothing IMO and costs no extra at that time.

I hope that this helps and please remember that it is ONLY what I do. Maybe I am over protective of what I write.

God Bless Roy and Helen

CycleGuy, I think merely adding a (C) Bug, 2012 and the "by {Your Name Here}" gets Ya "Covered" when ya post Lyrics HERE. (& adding "All Rights Reserved" legally covers your (C) Abroad..which is why I add that at Lyric's End.) (You've in-essence, "Published" your works...as far as US Copyright Law goes...though this IS just The Bare Minimal Step.)

Of course, "Lyrics-Only"...is also bare-minimum Song-wise, too..heh! CAN staple a Bookfulla Printoffs and (C) that as a Book...or a "Collection"...for a single Check.

& Yes, whenYa add MUSIC, it's now a Different Matter..but not TOO Different. As long as YOU are the Author of all the words, (C) the resulting SongS as a Collection. Single Check again. Just gotta list EACH Co-Writer for Each Song being (C) on Form PA. & mail-in a Single CD for the whole she-bang.

IF You've recorded a CD for-Release, & wanna (C) the CD as-Recorded, get a Form SR (For Sound Recording) & THAT, too, requires another Check... All of Which went UP a few years back... So, yeah, I've not kept UP with the Amount that takes...since I've focused mostly on Creating Lyrics...& posting Here...Gratis.

Good Luck with all the Legalities. Unless You're selling Quantities...it's not worth spending a whole lotta loot...JMO.

Best Wishes/Big Guy Hug,
Stan

When uploading is there a time limit to do it?If you were uploading 50 songs, would it time out before it was completed? Do you receive something to prove the transaction was completed ok? Do they mail you proof of copyright after it is completed?

When uploading is there a time limit to do it?If you were uploading 50 songs, would it time out before it was completed? Do you receive something to prove the transaction was completed ok? Do they mail you proof of copyright after it is completed?

Everette...
No time limit as long as you keep the mouse moving..lol

You can spend as long as you want typing in the file links and details, then when you click finish, it will load everything at once.

You will get 3 emails. One for registration, one for payment and another for uploads that lists the uploaded files.(I think the items are listed according to what you typed in after each file when you gave the small descriptions)

You normally get the certificate about 4 to 6 weeks afterwards.

I hope that helps

God Bless Roy and Helen.

ps. you can do everything and stop after paying and before uploading the files.. then login later and do the uploading, but once you upload, the application is closed.

I think you use the sr for sound recording form, and the cassette(not sure why they think a cassette is safe) amd whatever fits on the cassette is what is copyrighted for that.

I suppose you could submit 20 cassettes, but I believe they would charge for each cassette sent.

Remember though this method has some flaws. You are copyrighting the SOUNDS on that cassette. Everything from the singers and musicians performance, to the actual mix and production is copyrighted.

It should still cover you for your song, but if you decided you would re record the song, and make an album say, only the original performances and mixes etc would be copyrighted, so you would have to do it again, and re submit.

Having said that, simply having a copyright, does not prove you wrote a particular song, it just means you are taking credit for it. You could have stolen it from a homeless guy the day before.

So, even with the copyright, you could still have a hard time proving somebody stole your song, coincidences happen often in music. Especially of you accuse a famous artist of stealing your song....good luck!

If you have a hit with your song, then you are guranteed of proof

The current copyrighting process via the SR form is feeble protection for a song or composition but I suppose it's better than doing nothing at all. The fee is still too high and the process takes too long. I'm hoping our government will see fit to "privatize" the process with appropriate safeguards and oversight.

The Library of Congress is a wonderful place but the copyright office, residing under their umbrella, is woefully understaffed and significantly overworked. Throw in the security disaster associated with the mail process and it is a recipe for failure.

In all honesty, I have not tried the "on-line" process and have heard good things about it.

At least, registering your songs with your "Pro Organization" is still free. Don't forget to take this step once your copyright has been approved.

All my best,

Dave
