Sub, (Mike Caro), has finally some relief from his secondary symptom, Pain. Not all the pain in his back but from a trial nerve block in the Thoracic Spine, (the middle back). Arthritis was found by a doctor that bothered to take Mike seriously. Massive amounts of it too, throughout. Others just said there was "some" normal arthritis, with one "Kessler Institute" Joker not even looking at the MRI's said. (You'll have back problems when you're my age"). How's that for a top doc in a top place? That sort of thing is what Mike has been having to deal with for years. One told him it's all anxiety. Really? Is having 250 pound truck tires being lifted with the stress on his neck and back for 5 years, day after day in the extreme cold or heat an anxiety issue? We should have brought one full tire and wheel as Mike had to lift and move to have the doctors move it just once to see how much anxiety played into destroying his neck and back! And these people hang their doctor plaques on the wall for what? Not to show they can think and care, that's for sure for a lot he and I have seen "at work". Pitiful, actually.

I made an amateur possibility diagnosis document for Mike that I gave to the PR's at the last place. I think "maybe" between "that", but mostly what Mike had said to them, (and this time, THIS PLACE LISTENED), he got full attention and TIME and CARE for them to think as to what to do. They all, (two PR's and the doc had a meeting for a while before all coming back in the exam room). It was a pain management place that Mike had already been to a couple of months ago, and was not seen by the doctor then for it was the day of just a pre-exam, with the doctor being off. This time, with the doc there, and armed with our new document to make clear what WE think is wrong, and Mike's clear, focused symptoms and circumstance explanations, he got a positive process started!

Now, the goal for going back on the first of November, is to have them hear Mike's feedback on the nerve blocks, and then move on to other areas of the spine, possibly with steroids. (The GOOD BATCH of steroid shots where needed, NOT the NECC's chemical, of course). They don't use them anyway.

The hope then is to see if the first symptom complaint of Mike's, (his constant disequilibrium), is relieved or not due to any less compression of the cervical spine from those soon to be steroid shots. (To see if "Cervical Vertigo/Disequilibrium" is a cause, as we suspect, along with a Utricle organ malfunction in his inner ear confirmed by Bloomsburg U.): Crystals could be dropping back from the failing Utricle organ, giving Mike bouts of vertigo of one kind or another, depending on how many crystals are dislodged, and if Cervical Vertigo is at play too. (A One-Two Punch of various strengths, depending).

Mike was, and has been relentless in his attempt to get diagnosed and treated. (16 years)! This approach of correctly treating the symptoms of pain along the spine and shoulders is the first good result of him going to 68 doctors in that 16 year period. One place made him worse, with having to go on THE ROTATIONAL CHAIR! Yikes! That would make Chuck Yeager and the latest Space Jump Man ill)!

Now, more than ever, (however), Mike is battling other issues not of the spine or ear. So, in thanks for your past thoughts and prayers for Mike, please heighten them now, and send as much Love Energy as you can his way, (along with others of course in your life, here, and at home and work). I will do the same for all I know of. (One of my friends just had a vicious fall down wood steps that severely damaged his brain).

Thank You for all your efforts and care for Mike and anyone who is suffering,
Johnny D

Well, halelujah!! A docto who actually "Listened"
My opinion of doctors in general is not very high. A pity that it takes that long to find a decent one. One problem on pain is that thing they give you about "Rate your pain on a scale of 1 to 10 , which is practicaly useless, I was in the hospital a long time once and they'd kept me zonked for almost 3 days cause I was hurting worse than "anybody" could stand--when I could watch a TV again they had a woman on with just a sore nose--How would you rate the pain? --oh about an 8!! that's what i mean.
Hang in Sub.

Johnny, you are a good man. It has been such a long road for Mike. I am glad he is getting some progress. It speaks pretty badly for the medical profession that it took this long to get some progress. Thanks for the info.

Wow, thanks John for caring and sharing, and thanks all you guys!!!

We are still no where near out of the woods. This step was just a case of me accepting and allowing drugs to be injected into my body. It was also our idea to make it part of a test, too see if the spine help would help the vertigo!

Not only do I dislike ALL drugs, I know I'm only masking a symptom. If a drug is a life saving one then I'm fine with it. Or if it will fix a problem.. For me now that is becoming the case in a way... Life threatening and life saving can mean two different things.

Having chronic illness or health issues RUINS your life!!!

That's what it has done to mine, it starts with the problem itself.
Then it gets to NOT being able to get a diagnosis or any help with the problem. Which is a whole new problem. The more years
the worst it gets, 16 for me now.

Then comes the loss, loss of work, loss of dreams, loss of love
and loss of hope.

The frustration makes plenty of room for the anxiety and depression which brings more loss and still you don't why..

The seven shots has reduced pain in one area of my back, the other two are next I guess. Steroids for the neck...We have an appointment Monday at a top place in New York City. To be hopeful would be SILLY at this point. I don't think the 70th doctor is gonna make spit of a difference. I'd bet all I had against it and I'd WIN!

I am going to DEMAND something, some advice, some lead, a suggestion. OR at least I want some stuff ruled OUT. Sorry WRONG!! With super specific symptoms that I explained one million times it CAN NOT be a million different things! I don't want to hear that crap.

I may NEVER get an answer or help, but I'm determined NOW more than ever before to get one....

I ABSOLUTELY must get help get better or die trying period.

PS - John that was 5 years straight of lifting those truck tires
17 years overall on & off ....

Thank you all
and God Bless

Mike/Sub

Thanks!
Peace Mike

Thanks for the updates, John and Mike.

I'm glad you're getting some pain relief, Sub. I sympathize with not wanting to take drugs. I've seen folks take a drug for one reason, only to have it cause something else that they need another drug for, and so on.

But if there is a chance it will improve your quality of life, it seems like a reasonable gamble.

Hope you keep punching, my friend.

Scott

Those injections can make a huge difference. When you say you don't want meds to "mask" a problem, well, if you have a chronic disease or condition that means it will always be there.. so masking the negative results as best possible is the only option and it's counter productive to refuse it. I know plenty about all of this. I don't talk a lot about it, but without masking many serious issues I have, I wouldn't be able to function at all.. not type a note, not talk on the phone, certainly not get out of bed or a chair. So it's troublesome to hear some of what you are saying. Sometimes your body simply won't work as you hope it would and so you can treat it with what is available and move forward, or refuse all but your dream cure and suffer and continue to get worse. No one should drug themselves into oblivion, but if you have REAL pain (which you do) for example, taking even hard core meds will not negatively affect you. The pain absorbs the meds and you don't get high or buzzed or bleary or affected in a negative way. If you are, you're simply taking too much, so back it down until it balances out, don't just rule it out.

Especially when they dont know what it is or whats causing it. It be great to always be able to get to the root of the problem and treat it naturally, but sometimes drugs are all there is.

Anybody in chronic pain is thankful for toxic drug A and toxic drug B, even if the drug might kill them.

Pain is a terrible thing, it can cut your will to live.

I think diet, exercise and natural treatments are all great and should be used, but I dont blame anyone for taking drugs when there isnt much else.

Nice to see the Sub-Man getting at least a little thread of hope!

And I'll also chime in with agreement about the quality friend he has in you Johnny!!....Oh, and another ditto regarding the pain meds. They don't need to "heal", and at this point, "masking" can lead to a much better quality of life.

Prayers, vibes, and an assortment of other positives continuing to come your way from Raleigh.

Just to add, because I originally felt the same way: Pain Meds may certainly make you dependent on them to get through the day. I was very concerned about that. But my Doctors explained the vast difference between Dependent and Addicted. People have a right in the USA to have their pain treated. Abusers take them to get high. Addicted people should not take drugs of any kind because they are not using them to deal with ailments, but rather to alter moods and feelings. If someone is in massive and relentless pain, pain meds, even the hardest legal ones on the market, will mask that pain so you can function. Instead of making someone high, they simply make someone feel normal like they did without pain. If it goes beyond that, making you feel high, or light headed or any other unnatural way, then you need to back off the levels, look for possible interactions with other meds or even alternatives if that doesn't work. But do NOT deny yourself freedom from debilitating pain. There's no reason to and it can certainly help you resume your life.

Wishing you the best, bro'. It's unfathomable to me that after all you've been through, that if they haven't found a cure {or at least pinpointed the damn PROBLEM!} that they haven't at LEAST found a way to improve your quality of life..Sadly, I think Everette hit it on the head

HiDee Johnny & Sub!

Wow..One-outta-68...talk about Incredible Odds, Gents!!!

But Yeah, just takes that ONE..who actually LISTENS...& just Maybe All The Answers will begin a-flowing...along with some RESULTS!!!

You're both in my Prayers, Guys...

For whatever it's worth, I've been huggin'-&-movin' Grandfather Clocks for over 40 years...had some back pain issues after taking a 15-foot-fall off our Street Clock out-front. Got one of those Gravity-Exercise Gadgets at local flea market...to hang by my heels in..every evening...& the pain went away/haven't used it in years now. Might wanna try it..Ya never know what works.

Hopefully, THIS Doc you've found has Something that does!!!

Continued Best Wishes to Both You Guys,
Stan

Thanks everyone!

The main health issue Mike deals or tries to deal with in his disequilibrium. Can not even stand up right, never mind hang upside down! But thanks Stan for caring and suggesting "anything"!!! That is more than most docs seen have done for Sub.

He has tried the vestibular exercises,,,but with the unstableness, those movements just make it all worse. Same with the book one top doc told him to get. One of the simple movements caused and started the head zaps to surge down his back from his back of the head. Like getting hit with a hammer on some cartoon. An electric surge and vibrating Bang. (Nerves obviously being compressed).

Below is what I put together a few weeks ago to give to Mike and doctors. The first place at least read it and maybe talked about it with other staff, for they then focused on his spine and found arthritis, which led to nerve block shots. Soon to try steroid shots. But with this Utricle not being repaired, he may still have some vertigo even if the main cause of disequilibrium is caused by spine compressions at the facet joints.

Possible Diagnosis Pending for Mike Caroccia
10-7-2012
John Daubert

1. "Malfunctioning Utricle In Varying Combination With Cervical Vertigo/Disequilibrium":  (Ongoing And Varying Conditions From Possible Birth Disorder and Degeneration) Partial Dr. Gonzales Diagnosis For #1 Only. Malfunctioning Utricle.
Bloomsburg University Confirmed by Dr. Gonzales. Left Ear. Resulting In Varying, Continual BPPV, (Benign Paroxysmal Positional Vertigo).

2. Possibly Coinciding With "Cervical Vertigo/Disequilibrium". (Arthritis found).
(Also Showing Symptoms of Cervical Spondylosis). Past Continual-Stress-Trauma Includes Degenerative Yet Varying Pain and Stiffness of Neck and Shoulders, With Ear Fullness.

3. Possibly Coinciding Resulting Fatigue: Mainly Weight-Baring Weakness Sensation in Legs. To Have, "No Legs".

As I am not here often, I am so ill informed about these things. I catch myself saying things like "what the hell is going on"...."why are all these things happening"?.....I hope things improve rapidly for glyn and mike.........and I hope everyone takes care......it can be troublesome when absent for a bit and learning of these things upon return.

God speed.

Thanks all you guys, and Brian your absolutely right in what your saying. I'm already under way with the pain management, I took seven injections already. I dont know how many they can give at once yet or to how many areas at once.. I will find out.

We went to Weill Cornell NY Presby in Manhattan Monday. It was the MS Department. She was very nice and she cared. She pretty much ruled OUT MS thank goodness. The only feedback we got was that my MRI's of the past two years were of Poor Quality, and that I would need to go back into the closed MRI machine instead of the open MRI machine. So that was a POSITIVE thing.

She had no thoughts, ideas or comments on why I have had balance issues for 20 years in which 16 of those has been spent seeking doctors help. Or why I was in constant pain from neck to lower back. Or if there was ANY possible connection between the two.

I have NO problem trying ANYTHING as long as somebody gives me a decent reason or explanation why.
You want to trust and accept what medical professionals tell us but still we must have a mind of our own to some degree. especially with NO DIAGNOSIS!

1- In 2003/2004 MY doctor or any doctor I saw would not sign my temporary disability form, "Sick pay"
So a friend recommends a Chiropractor he knows, to to do that and help with my neck & back. All is well, I get the sick pay but he wants to treat me 3 X a week. So he cracks my neck & back 3 X a week for many months. Then says. " I can't help you, you need a Neurologist"

2- In 2005 Another doctors writes on my report, "I Should not have my neck & back manipulated as it could worsen my condition" That dizziness doctor is also in Chiro.

3- 2011 A Balance Specialist says he wants me to take the Rotational Chair Test... I do it! On the last stage of the test they move the chair. I FREAK out and try to hold on, after 10 seconds I throw my headset off and try to jump out. But I'm strapped in. The tester says. "I have never seen anyone do that before" I promise myself I'd NEVER go in that booth & chair again.
He sends me to another doctor in PA

4 - 2011 John & I drive four hours to Bloomsburg University to a leading Balance specialist. First thing he does is place me in that CHAIR... I say oh boy! But I'm desperate to get answers so I agree to try and hold on and do it.. I let them TORTURE me for two hours in that thing. I don't know how I didn't puke all over.
I make it through that and an ear colonic make you super dizzy test, both ears.

5 - The next day I wake up completely unable to sit up stand or walk. NEVER in my life or the last 16 years have I ever felt like this. True vertigo!!! Not my normal quick tipping, rocking in boat sensations, or walking in sand sensation...
Two hours in the bed trying to crawl to the bathroom, freaked out. I get to the phone call the doctor, he's like time your self to see how long this last etc...

6- Since that day June 15th 2011 I have had FIVE more attacks of this magnitude or close to it. NEVER ever before!!!

The doctor who gave me the test said he strongly felt I had a disfunction in my left ear, he would like to do more chair testing!! No insight on the spinal issues. He send this info back to the balance specialist who sent me to him and that guy says "I don't think that is the problem or at least not enough to cause your legs to feel weak and all this obvious pain etc...
HE keeps sending to a Neurologist.... NO SUGGESTIONS!

7- The next new Dizzy specialist in 2012 says' WOW no way they should have put you through those tests!! I could see that problem with a basic balance exam. They roughed you up bad for someone with your sensitive vestibular system.
Your right MIKE it's no coincidence you had that attack the next day or the ones since...

Reminder - STOP doing crap until you know WHAT the hell is wrong with you LOL Everything sounds okay when you are very desperate.
One guy wanted to do spinal neck surgery in 2008 three others since did NOT.

Pain will not stop me from walking or doing exercises hard as that is... Vertigo and weakness will, as will these more recently acquired head surges.

As I type here, my neck and back are killing me, but the spins I'm getting and as I turn pale and nausea is what's making me stop right now. So back to my recliner chair alone all day and and thinking & thinking and watching my life and happiness slip away and just walk out the door.

Thank you all so much and God Bless
Mike

Thanks!
Peace Mike

Hey John and Mike,

Just getting a chance to poke around the General Forum, and I'm glad I found this. John, you've been such a great friend to and advocate for Mike, and I appreciate all you've been doing for him, and for keeping us informed.

As for you Mister Caro, gosh, I can't believe this is still going on. Well, that's not entirely true, I guess I can believe it -- just sad that it is and that you're still in such limbo. I'm happy to hear that you've found at least some relief, and perhaps this is a small step in the right direction. Having someone listen to you makes a world of difference.

It's a shame you've had to fight for all this too. I truly commend your perseverence and knack for not just accepting carte blanche what these doctors tell you. My dad was in for spinal surgery in August...for what was to be a three day post-op stay....but it turned into another surgery and 8 weeks in hospital then several weeks in rehab. The whole time my parents assured us "kids" they were sure the doctors were doing the best they could. ARGH! Blind faith...not good in these sort of medical scenarios.

Sorry for the digression -- I'm still aggravated about that (he just got home from rehab a week ago today).

Anyhoo, good luck Sub baby -- continued healing thoughts headed your way!!

xo,
Beth

Thinking about the medical stories I read here, and the medical issues that have happened in my own family, I have come to a conclusion. We do need to trust our doctors up to a point, but not beyond not making sense. I think it is okay for patients to say NO to something that makes no sense. If something that seems counterintuitive is important, then the pros ought to be able to explain it in a way that makes sense. If it were me, and I was that dizzy, I doubt I would let a doctor put me in a blender or a centrifuge or merry-go-round or whatever. Actually, Mike, there's your answer: get well first, then WRITE A BOOK. Name names, heh heh. You'll make millions.

Well that's the last of it, the last of life as I have known it.
My wife has left me and filed for divorce. It is totally devastating to me, as I simply can not imagine life without her in it.

Twenty Five Years! half of my life....

Haven't had the will to come around or do much of anything really until today. She has detached herself totally from me over the last two years and moved on & nothing I say or do can stop or change it. I have never known hurt, loss or pain like this. Boy do I ever need my health back NOW!

I thank God for Johnny Daubert who has been riding this out with me as he has with my vertigo & spinal pain. And as always I appreciate all you guys here for your kind words, prayers and support.

I have lost my best friend ever in the world, the one I loved & trusted more than anyone, and the love of my life.
I just can't understand why she doesn't think she has too?

God bless & much love

Mike

Thanks!
Peace Mike

I cannot imagine what you are going through, Mike. Vertigo, physical pain and now an almost unendurable loss. I wish I had words to comfort you, my friend. You are a very unique individual and I admire your spirit and will to defeat this malady you have put up with for so long.

I'm not sure if I have any influence with the "Man Upstairs" but I'll sure be talking to Him tonight on your behalf.

All the best, always...

Just got back from Sub's 10 minutes ago. Went to Chilli's! Fun! Great to see him out of his house going to another place other than the doctors as many times before! And, HE took me out! Tough night for him, despite the moments of laughter and going Hmmmm.

He puts Rocky to shame.

But, keep talking to the entity everywhere!

I thought I was tough, yep Johnny, Sub puts Rocky to shame, ...now if I was just about 50 years younger, I'd be chasing Mr. Mike...to me he's the best and what talent....well, now Johnny you're pretty wonderful too....but Mike...man...I still laugh at that picture where Ali wanted to touch his hair cause he couldn't believe a white guy could have hair like Mike...Mike has done so many wonderful things.....

Wish I lived closer, I'd love to see Mike in person and Johnny too, you guys ROCK in my book..

I also wish I knew the words to make all this better...been through a couple of divorces myself....but that was my choice....I can feel Mikes pain and wish I could stop it...love you guys

Thanks all you guys, really I tried to keep this in but I'm not good with this kind of loss. People can see it on my face and in my eyes right away.

I'm so worried for her, and finally when I think of how I'll never see her again I simply can not breathe...

Thanks!

Nothing I can add, Mike, except I've been there and I know it's tough. But I'd like to think you're tougher, although you are not feeling it now.

Thanks guys & thanks Dave...

Again just like the vertigo and the constant spine pain there's nothing I can do to stop it, or say to change her mind. It's just an awful lot to deal with around the clock day after day. An old childhood friend is staying here with me now he lost his home during Sandy..

Thanks!
Peace Mike

Hey Mike...

Been thru it as well...(32 years).
Time and close friends are great healers.
My best friend and his wife are moving in with me as they are losing their home to foreclosure.
Hang in there my friend.
