Been meaning to post about it and T Wallace's post reminded me.

Why is TV so obsessed with Judging?

I mean really everyone is in front of some panel... And most times there's a British man ripping into them ever since Simon.

First off there's Judging LITERALLY!

Judge Judy,The People's Court,Judge Joe Brown, Judge Alex etc....

Then talk shows where they put you up there on a stage, and the host and the audience judges you...

Singing Shows X factor/ Idol/ Voice Americas Got Talent etc.. Judging - Dancing Shows Judging - Food Network Cooking Judging - Cup Cake Wars - panels of judges......

I mean really, it's an awful lot of the same concept, it's very tired. Lets bring back some FANTASY stuff like a Doctor who comes to your house with a bag a real sweetheart and he helps you no matter what. smile

Thanks!
Peace Mike

Maybe it's because everyone can't see the elephant in the room. Meaning that constant positive reinforcement that everyone is a winner has failed us. But they secretly like to see people fail, and love to see others shine from doing something well.

Reality is - not everyone is a winner, no matter how utopian the concept is.

Cool I inspired someone, reminded them actually, but I'll take it..

I agree that there is alot of "judging" shows out there. I'd like to say people watch these programs like Idol/X factor/Voice for ther music but I really think it is to watch someones elses dreams get crushed to feel better about themselves. Then again I have beeen accused of being cynical a time or two.

I am now hooked on AMC's Hell on Wheels...its fantasy dark but fantasy

People crave drama and excitement as a relief from their own boring lives. They watch sports not to see an athlete exhibit perfection but to see the wreck on turn three, or the skier rolling head first down the slope or the golfer trying to escape a sand trap. They watch "reality" shows to see if they can guess who will be kicked out in the latest round. They watch Project Runway to see which fashion designer will be kicked off next and they watch Design Star to see which home designer fails miserably......

I met a girl who did well on The Voice although she was not a winner. She still tours the country solo gigging most nights to eke out a living. She is far from rich and famous despite being extremely good and successful on The Voice.

My wife loves the cooking shows and for the most part they are pretty positive. So You Think You Can Dance is quite popular around here also. I don't watch any of them (except for a few here and there).

I have not watched any of the these singing shows in two years - they simply are not interesting to me. The judges are performers more than judges.

Agreed.
However, The Voice is something a bit different.
I like that one, especially the blind auditions.

I know what you are saying Mike. I have been subject to it for a lot of my life. I know what it is but can't really explain it.

We are judged from the moment we are born. Then comes high school, no judging there right? Too pretty, too smart, etc. Into music? Get in a band and the first thing you do is enter a Battle of the Bands! We are always being judged by somebody every waking moment. Welcome to mankind.

But I say bring back TV show theme songs! Everyone can sing Gilliganís Island and Green Acres, etc. I canít think of one show on today that I can sing the theme song to.

If a show doesn't have one or more of the following, I'm not likely to be watching:

Cowboy
Zombie
Alien
Giant Shark
John Stewart
Stephen Colbert
James Bond
Olympic Athletes

So I guess I have no opinion. Or maybe that IS one smile

I think these shows are poison.

I also think most TV is poison. Why? Because it is more detrimental than helpful to people in just about every way. Television keeps most people motionless and effectively hypnotized throughout the majority of their non-working free time. It's the #1 force that prevents us from transforming our personal ambitions into action. More TV means less hobbies, less projects, less interaction with our own children and family, less community involvement. It's what keeps us from knowing the names of our own neighbors. Other than processed food and diet soda, it's what makes us fat.

It also keeps us somewhat brainwashed--90% of the opinions we hear from each other sure do sound exactly like the stuff that was just broadcast the night before. And don't get me started on the local news shows...

Okay, rant over. And even with all that said, I'm not so sure we all just like to see peoples dreams crushed on these talent competitions...the biggest ratings of their seasons seem to be the finales, where a dream comes true. I think seeing someone triumph is what keeps people watching, so maybe our hearts aren't that jaded after all.

The whole attitude has changed.... to quote Jodie,

"Reality is - not everyone is a winner, no matter how utopian the concept is."

And that's the problem. Where are the working musicians ?

There was a time when a musican didn't have to be a super star and could make a GREAT living entertaining in his field.

Now, if you're not an Idol winner, ( or even looser ) "you're a looser and haven't succeded".

Tell ya what, if there is ever a time when live music makes a comeback, and the joint is junping with perhaps 100 people, and that's happening all over town, I'll be grinning from ear to ear.

Judging ? Who needs it. Just give me a venue to play in and a pay check, and get music back to reality.

cheers, niteshift

Mike--

I like the old Perry Mason B & W shows--The JUDGE ISN'T THE STAR--THE LAWYER IS--I ALWAYS KNOW MASON'S DEFENDING THE WINNER--

For some reason, I've always had the feeling MUSIC IS RIGGED!

If you want a REAL reality check and one of the most amazing drama's on TV which shows a real transition from good guy to monster (over many seasons) get on Netflix and watch Breaking Bad. Also on Netflix is another fantastic show, Battlestar Galactica which is likely the finest Sci Fi show ever on TV because it goes so much farther than just Sci Fi to amazing storytelling and engrossing human drama. I had friends asking me to watch BG for years and I am so glad I made the time. All 72 episodes are on Netflix. Breaking Bad is still on air, but the first 4 seasons are on Netflix.

As for judging shows, people think they are seeing an honest process where talent wins the day. They are NOT. These shows are 100% manipulation of results to make you think fairness is involved, but it isn't. Some walk right up to dishonesty as close as they could come without criminal charges, others use every subtle trick and illusion they can to do the dirty work. But it's all unfair nonsense. Worst: Tie: The Voice and The Glee Project. Best (and it's a really really low bar) American Idol. We only know this because so many years, even though they try hard to push certain people, in the end, they often don't get who they really want to win.

There are other shows that have come and gone that were worse. The only show I even peak at anymore is AI and that is only in the final 12-13 just to see if anyone outstanding is there, and there usually are a few who will have success, but they pass over many who were better and push ones who have deep ties to people involved in the show (which has been exposed more than once, the worst being the guy who was currently sleeping with then judge Paula Abdul).

The reason there's so much of it is that it is all DIRT CHEAP to produce. Nothing more complicated than that. Great drama's like the ones I mentioned above cost a fortune. These reality shows do not. And enough people watch them to get a great return on investment. It's like stores selling cheap Chinese made junk, it may suck, but there's great profit in it and people buy it, especially now when the economy sucks.

Havre a nice day. I'm going to the Arc De Triumph and the Louvre today. How about you?

Signing off from Paris,

Brian

For me, TV means Phillies Baseball Games!

Besides that, "ID, Investigated Discovery"). Shows of several types that reveal actual detective work from real cases. Cops work harder than we might think to catch the killers in this nation.

As Brian said, "reality" TV shows are a cheap way to produce entertainment. TV used to be made up of Programs that hired actors and producers with a screenplay. The "reality" TV show is kind of a reflection of today's music industry.

Well, I enjoy Idol, not so much xfactor, for entertainment purposes. I see it as a TV show, as do it;s creators and the audience.

I dont like Idols premise...that music is somehow a competition. That couldnt be further from the truth, NOBODY is better than anybody in music. No matter how good you think you are, somebody is better, somebody thinks you suck, etc.

You dont need to be the best to make a record that somebody can enjoy and get inspired by, you just need to have something to offer.

The judging thing is kind of funny really. If anybody believes that the singers are chosen for talent alone, they are crazy.

These kids are passed through to the final rounds, and then the judges judge them? Wait a minute, you pushed them through to the final 12, now you want to say how awful they are? Well, if they are awful, how did they beat out hundreds of thousands of others?

Any idiot could tell if somebody is good enough to go to the first round, Ive never had one case where I was surprised at what the judges said.

I dont think Brittany Spears can hear a good singer any better than I can.

So judges are the show, they are the stars, they are the celebs.

it appeals to the "know it all" in all of us, many of us long to be in a place, where our opinion counts, in most cases our opinion means nothing.

So the phone lines light up, because people like to have a voice. Their vote means nothing but it's something!

I think it's just the person putting themselves in the shoes of the judge, and living through the judges more than living through the people on the show.

If there were good sitcoms like Cheers or Seinfeld on primetime again, my guess is these stupid shows would be gone.

reality shows got a lift during the writers strike, and they found that they didnt have to pay the people on reality shows nearly as much as a big actor.

Would u rather pay Jerry Seinfeld a million an episode, or would you rather have 12 unknown singers, who will be on the show for free?

I like B-Westerns. My parents (The Greatest Generation) grew up watching them. They walked to the theater downtown on Saturday morning and for .25 cents, got a ticket, bought a Coke, and a box of popcorn and watched a couple of movies and newsreels until mid afternoon. The studios made lots of money with these low budget films from selling merchandise like Gene Autry toy guitars, toy six guns, lunch boxes, etc.

I'm kind of with Mark on the TV thing and I know that he also can put video games, cell phones, texting, and the Internet into the mix. These things have their place, but it seems that excess rules. I loved board games when I was a kid, but you had to have someone to play against. You can play a video game alone. That's not good, but they are good for learning hand/eye coordination and recognising shapes and sounds. My neighbors son joined The Air Force and is now training as an air traffic controller and/or a drone pilot because of his hand/eye coordination test score that he learned from playing video games. Not every kid is planning to join The Air Force, but it worked for him.

I like some reality shows even though they are all phony - the the set ups and editing that spins what happens.

I will almost always watch Pawn Stars even if I have seen the episode 5 times

I think part of the judging aspect is parallel to song critiquing,I think we may like to see if our "judgement" of the song fits in with the experts.
How do we compare our opinions with theirs, would we call it the same way?

Every one is always looking for the "Simon" to tell the singer how terrible or great they did, much like critiquing songs, if your opinion matches the ones on the pedestal then you feel somewhat "validated" like you might actually know something about music/performing ect.

However this type of judging doesn't seem to be personal, it's reflected on the performance of the song, not the actual person.

I must admit, I haven't watched it in years after Jennifer Hudson was given the boot-Something clicked in me that this might not be "real" and so I think I just wrote it off internally.
