I've been writing for a few years with various writers and we are now ready to really begin pitching some songs. I'm on Music Xray and have used Taxi before. Who should a writer be trying to get their songs to an A & R or a Publisher? I'm talking copyrighted, demoed up songs ready to be heard. Just for dreaming if I was to walk up to one's door and Knock on it should it be a Publishing company or what would be best one to use at trying to get your songs to an artist?

Good question. If I knew the answer, I would tell you. I would say if you are capable of self-publishing, go straight to the A & R people. If not, find a strong publisher who can truly help you.

Brandon...
Big Labels are a closed shop for the most part...they have more good songs than they can handle...as the financial pie gets smaller they are not willing to share what's left. Your best bet is to approach an Indie Label and get to an up and coming artist that might like your tunes...

I had my own label. I also spent a small fortune.

Brandon the other thing is too make friends with artists and write with them. since you are going to write anyway why not increase your chances of something happening.

Are you looking to place in TV/film as well? I hear TAXI can be a good outlet if you invest the cash and the time. I've been using SonicBids some and was recently approached by a smaller company about pitching material to those in need of music to license. I'm thinking of signing on with them because there will be no submission fees--they are paid finders fees by the companies seeking material. At the same time I've been working with local artists and also releasing our own music.
You know what? I think it's a good idea to put feelers out all over. in2piano is right about big labels if you're looking to place with an artist. If you're looking to make money, or at least support you're work, licensing is one method.

Go local ---- find some local artists, advertising companies, etc. Remember that there are about 1,000,000 songs written every week - 30,000 each week in Nashville alone.
