Hi Folks,
We had requests for a forum for people to share short stories, poetry and other creative writings. So here it is. Please only post original works or educational and informational posts related to creative writing. Perhaps we'll even do some creative writing excercises and shared story writing if this takes off.
Have fun!
Brian

I agree with Vikki...very cool, Brian. I've written more poetry and short stories in the past two years than I've written songs. Which is not really something I planned...it just happened. When the lyric well dried up, I still had these ideas for songs but I couldn't make them work, so I redirected that energy somewhere else. (I do hope to get back to lyric writing someday, though. ) A quick question...(and this may seem like a silly one, but...) Is work posted here for critique or just for sharing? I only ask because of the way your post is worded above: people wanted to share... I assume people posting still want critiques, but wanted to know for sure before I gave someone feedback on a piece. ~Christine

You should probably preface it with "I'd like feedback on this one" or "this is just to share a story I wrote" if you're worried about that topic. It's really up to you. But I love the idea of giving our talented members a chance to share some other sides of them. And down the road I bet we have some cool cross-pollination.

Brian, this is the first I've noticed this forum and it is great. Not that I can share anything but what an outlet for the talented folks 'round here. Thank you from the audience.

Thanks John. My thought here is exactly that.. let's create some simply additional ways for folks here to share their other talents. As it develops, my hope is that we attract others to come here to intermix their talents with our talent pool and then see what new stuff develops. Multimedia.. musicals.. new inspirations for new projects on the internet... etc. It also lets me learn a lot more about members of the community.
Thanks for noticing!

i just had a quick question...is there any "rule" about posting a little colorful language? im not talking about every other word being a cuss but i have a few peices that do contain adult wording simply to provoke a bit of emotion to the reader. i just wanted to know before i posted. thanks. and by the way i think this a great forum and i hope it really takes off!

There's no rule. Just common sense. If it's gratuitous (i.e. expletives for the sake of it and not to say something or to represent real speech) then I'd think twice. If it's just part of the work.. then go for it.

So we've had this up for a few months now. Does anyone have suggestions on how to improve or adjust it? Should we find a moderator to get more folks involved in tips or lessons or ?
Let me know.

I just found this site. Sounds like this could turn into some fun reading. Don't know what type of creative writing you are looking for but I have an idea of starting a fun post and, hopefully some fun reading.

Brian this may sound like a silly question, but what exactly does a moderator do in these forums...i never really paid any attention to much besides lyrical/poetic posts. sorry for the dumb question. i would love to see more people involved here though and i and a few others have been trying to spread the word to generate more traffic and participation. so i guess anything that gets more involved would be a good thing...just my thought... by the way...i am not sure that i have ever said this to you before, but thank you. thanks you for all you do to support this craft and providing a safe and informative place for people to share, collaborate and make new friends. so, again thank you from the bottom of my heart. i hope this finds you well.

Hi Nicholaus,
Just noticed this post. Moderators have the ability to edit or delete posts mostly. In some cases, if we have an interested member who wants to develop the board more, give some educational lessons (assuming they have knowledge and skills to do that.. like Scott on the Photo board) we make them a moderator as well. I am all for developing this more. My #1 talent is actually as a writer long before and since being involved as a songwriter/musician, so I particular would love to see this board take off. I know most musicians have other skills as well and I am hoping we can get folks to share those creative talents with us as well as their music.

brian i do have some knowledge and a litte skill (or so i like to think so), and i am always looking to better my self as a writer. i would LOVE to see this forum take off. i have been trying to spread the message and it seems to be working slowly. there have been some wonderful peices submitted recently from some new faces. if you would like to have a moderator, i would be glad to lend my time. if you would like a moderator for this forum, just send me a PM or an email. again thanks for all you do and i hope this finds you well!

HERE IS A SILLY POEM FROM MY COLLECTION I love you dear Burrito. Encompassed in your tubular crepe, rocketing my taste buds and neurotransmitters into a field of delight. I love being drawn metaphorically into the conflict of the human condition. The condition of you Burrito being drawn to my tummy. Your crepe lips collide with my flesh lips, and your bean content becomes one with my stomach content, in a play of unity - unity with a hint of disturbance. When your crepe lips and my flesh lips collide, You bring me joy and pain - joy and pain. You're a GI rocketship you crazy burretto! You're a GI rocketship you crazy burretto! Kiss my GI system into submission with your dance of taste and nutrients. And help me to submit into the knowledge that I love you crazy burretto. Like a long lost lover, I love your crepe lips despite the pain. So I wrap my lips around your lips, and consume you with love and pleasure. And chew you, and absorb your bean soul into my effervescent soul, residing in this house that God built. SO SOON WE MET FAIR BURRETTO - AND SO SOON WE SAY GOODBY. No praise to the phallic images of man. striving for immortality. Just a salute to you, and I'll not forget you you wonderful, tubular, pleasure crepe! paul adams www.pauladams.org--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Hi Paul,
Try posting this on it's own (don't worry, you can simply post it again as a new post). That way folks will know to check it out like the other offerings.
Welcome to the boards!

Hi Brian, I have some know-how and experience with writing. I started publishing my work in lit magazines about ten years ago. Since then I've taught at writers' workshops and conferences and co-written two books on writing.
I wanted to volunteer sooner but have just been bogged down. I can be "around" to answer folks' questions on how to get their work published, and so on. I would be happy to help in whatever way you need.

Because I've had an impossible time trying to put a lyric together, I find this forum fantastic! Sometimes if I write poetry, prose or stream of consciousness it will spark creativity. Thank you for reaching out in so many ways, Brian!

Hi there brian! Well im just a newbie in this site and I got interested to this forum because I love creating poems but right now I want to share to you a very sad poem that I made for my best friend who passed away because she committed suicide,a sad poem because I got it from her suicidal note but I change something to make it nice to read I also posted this poem to itzamatch and a lot of people there like it,hope you like it too The Agony of Dying It was a rainy evening I was in my room weeping Tears flooded in my pillow And so my room is filled with sorrow I just can’t accept the reality That we will never ever be Do I have to suffer the pain? That keeps me crying in the rain? I realize that I have no purpose in life And so I got myself a very sharp knife I stared for a moment at the blade But memories of him still wouldn’t fade I pushed the blade unto my wrist The great pain I couldn’t resist I threw the knife away and stepped back Later my visions went black When I woke up it was so quiet strange and odd Like a paradise and home of a GOD I saw angels playing and smiling I was shocked and ask myself “am I dreaming?” Then an angel told me that I’m in a place free from earthly sufferings and lies When I heard these tears flooded in my eyes I just can’t believe that I’ve exchange my big happy family For someone stupid, worthless and silly I thought of the foolish things that I’ve done But it’s useless my chance of living is gone It’s because of that sharp knife That wined me up, and took my life

Hi Nocturnal D,
Welcome to the site. You should create a new post for this poem so others might take note and give you some feedback. Sorry to hear about your friend. The artist community (music, writing, art, acting) suffers too many suicides.

My bachelors degree is in Comparative Literature, but I use those skills to write lyrics ... I've often considered writing a book but my chapters usually turn into songs.
What if we had a contest for the best "song lyrics that can stand alone as poetry"?

I have a quote somewhere where I say that I think a good song lyric has much more in common with a great short story than a great poem. I see them as two different sensibilities. I'd be more interested in seeing who could take a cool short story (which they'd post here) and then turn it into a cool song lyric in the shortened form.
But I am up to anything.. if you want to head up the project you describe, set up some guidelines and post it and we'll see who is game. = )

Hi Folks,
I am wondering if folks enjoy using this board and want it to remain? We're looking at adding some new boards and when we do that, we usually move the "New Ones" into a permanent new spot or remove them if they aren't being used.
So let me know by responding here.

My friend lacy Talked to people One day And he said he was planting Planting seeds Planting whole fields Planting joy Planting love Planting peace And he was pleased With the fruit Of his labor And he knew that it Came from an inexhaustible Source I wondered when I listened I wondered what it would be Like to be declared organic To be certified By this One Substance This One Mind, It could say of me She has cleaned the soil Of her mind Of all the false ideas No more are there Pesticides to protect her From pestilence or her good She is growing her ideas In soil I have certified organic It’s safe to plant there Surely only good rises From her.

Hi Brian great idea for those writings not meant for song development......this is a poem or poetic story or whatever the hell-lol......i wrote it long ago as i was trying to see if i could even organize my thoughts into a understandable format........because i figured that would be a good way to see if i had any basis to pursue a writing career.....duh.....and though this is a great forum and i LOVE the internet-theres also a website that actually helps writers link up in person for sharing any kind of writing........its called www.meetup.com you go to the website-punch in your zip and it shows you all local meetings of writers groups in your area.......always nice to get out of the cave and blow off the dust for some live in person stuff.......the groups have poetry/fiction/nonfiction subgroups usually-depending on demand and desire of the local members...i am myself in both the nashville writers group and nashville songwriters group.....always trying to tell folks about any good stuff-so check out the site and see what may be near you........excuse my digression but it was related to creative writing.......heres the thing i initally started to talk about-lol......... Wrote this short story after having a discussion about animals and their ability to feel 'love', and their emotional sophistication. It is set in mid 20th century, in mid [fictional] America with it's sensibilities. Hope you enjoy it. Peace Gilles Chiasson PS Sorry for the script malfunctions!
Ferris, Sybil, and Ole’ Whiskers. By Gilles Chiasson 2009
The sun rose over Cracker Hill revealing a thick, humid dew. Ferris grunted and snorted, lying on the old rug by the rocker. Billy Whiskers wasn’t feeling well; he was old in the bones. Sybil was by his bed nudging him to rouse from his sleep. “OK damn it! I’ll feed ya. Just give me a second.” Billy threw over the covers. He was wearing old long johns, quivering from the cold floor he reached for his fleece night coat and knitted slippers his godmother made him. Ferris and Sybil were excited to get the day going, another adventure to take on. Billy wasn’t so sure. They had to go to town for this months mail at Cherry’s General Store, to pick up some supplies, and to pay down the tab. Billy made it to the cupboard and pulled out some dog chow and poured into the mixed breed mutts’s respective bowls. They were wagging their tails and pleased to feast while Billy put the water on the stove to make some coffee. He got some eggs out and went on to make scrambled eggs and toast with a side of bacon from the icebox. While the smell filled his tiny back woods shack, he could feel a draft from under the door blowing in. He stuck his face next to the window to see if he could tell what the weather would be like today. It seemed like the rain was breaking over the last few days. Today, the lousy weather should be gone. After the dogs had their fill, they were ready to run out and empty their bladders. They popped open the spring-loaded door and let it snap back closed with a slam. Billy’s head was pounding; his drinking days were numbered he thought. He got drunk three days ago, and he was still hung over. After breakfast, he threw the dishes into the wash bucket to attend to them later. He changed into his clothes and slicks. His boots from the day before were still a ways from being dry, so he broke out his back up pair. They weren’t as broken in but would do in a pinch. By now the dogs were barking and playing chase outside waiting for Billy Whiskers to come out. Billy picked up his bag, the colt.45, driving gloves and he left the house. The old red Fargo needed a top off; he emptied the Gerry can into the gas tank, and added another item to the list to get at Cherry’s. Ferris and Sybil were already seated in the passenger seat, patiently waiting for Billy to start them on their way. He threw his bag in the bed and looked over the scene. Cracker Hill was always a lovely place with its firs and pines framing the ridge above. “Now listen you two, no goofing around. Sit still and no barking, my head is still hurting.” The pair of dogs almost nodded and agreed to be quiet. Their leader was a strict but generous one. But Ferris grunted a little, followed by a sneeze that sprayed the windshield with canine mucus. “Damn Fer’, what did I just tell you?” Billy pulled out an old oil rag from under his seat and wiped down the glass clean, then fired up the truck and off they went. Wipers flapped irregularly, there was still a shy drizzle of cold late spring rain. Sybil and Ferris were silent, panting, and drooling while surveying the bumpy road before them. Billy was lost in his thoughts as he slowed the truck down, turning off Parker Road, heading onto Abigail’s Route. Soon he would pull up to Cherry’s General Store. Once there, he let the dogs out. “Be quiet! I’ll be backing a few minutes.” The two dogs sat by the front door, respectful of Billy’s command. They were under his absolute leadership. He grabbed the Gerry can and went inside. “So how’s by you Ginny?” asked Billy. Ginny wasn’t her real name but no one knew what that was. She claims she got the name for being a big drinker in her youth. But since her husband Cherry died many years ago she chose to sober up and continue running the general store. “Ah not bad, can’t get rid of that damn cold. What d’ya need there Whiskers?” “Well gonna pay down the tab a bit, get some gas, and pick up some of that fine coffee, and well here’s the list!” He tossed it to her, while he left out back with the Gerry can and filled up on gas. Ginny was packing everything in thick brown shipping paper just as Billy made in back in from the back door. “OK, let’s see here, your tab is now $14.40 so what’s you’re pleasure?” Ginny stated with her gruff, smoke filled voice. “Well here’s a ten-ner, and I’ll pay the rest before the end of the month. By the way, can I get my mail?” He was hoping to hear from his sister out in Lowland County down south. The health of his beloved but illiterate brother had been a concern lately. “No such luck but your Sears catalogue came in.” She tossed it at Billy in her usual charming way. “Here’s a couple pig’s ears for your dogs!” “Thanks! Any news about Molly?” asked Billy, it was his job to keep on top of the roaming bears in this part of the world. “Yeah I heard he was last seen just over Parker’s farm, out back last night. You want to bring him his mail while you’re at it?” Billy didn’t care for such treats but the dogs would wait patiently until they got home. If he gave it to them now, they would make a mess in the truck. He tossed the package in the bed as the dogs watched dutifully for his command to get in the truck. With a signal of Billy’s left hand Ferris and Sybil scampered into the truck. The news of Molly being so close to town worried him. He was the Cobb County Animal Bounty Hunter and that old crafty brown bear had been stirring up trouble for ages. Turning left off of Abigail’s Route, onto Parker’s Road, the dogs became agitated. Billy could tell they had picked upon the scent of Molly the bear. The hairs on their backs were straight, rigid, and tails low. A quick look over the Parker Farm range Billy noticed that trouble was brewing. Molly had Jim Parker in his grip by the red barn, and it looked pretty bad. The dogs were starting to growl. Billy quickly turned down the driveway to the farm, stomping on the brakes; he pulled out his colt and let the dogs out. He wished he had his 30/06 rifle, but the .45 would have to do for now. Molly had to be run off at the very least. With a whistle, Billy signaled to the dogs to keep Molly from going left and darting into the woods. It was only good old common sense to force the bear to stay out in the open. He fired a round causing Molly to drop Jim into a limp pile. Ferris by then had forced Molly to start running off as Sybil was more diplomatic, trying to coerce the brown bear over the open range. Billy checked his pockets to see if he had any spare rounds in but no luck. So he was down to five shots. His aim would have to be perfect if he was to have a chance at bagging the massive bear. Tragically, Billy came across Jim and he was dead. His throat had been ripped out, blood was down to a slow drizzle. From the corner of his eye, Billy could see that Molly was going after Ferris now. So Billy sighted the bear as best he could and took a second shot, hitting the brown bear in his right rib cage. But the bear managed to strike Ferris pretty good and sent the dog well over thirty feet into the air. He landed with a thud, just as Sybil had managed to take a chunk out of the bears left ear. Billy had come up another twenty yards and took another shot at Molly, this time aiming for his throat. Another good shot, blood spewed freely from the throat but Molly didn’t slow down. Billy’s concern was for Ferris. Sybil managed to distract the wounded brown bear, long enough for Billy to check Ferris out and it didn’t look good! He wasn’t conscious. Just then Sybil barked another warning, Billy turned, emptying his gun into Molly. The brown bear grunted in a death howl and fell to the ground like a big bag of rocks. Billy was taking deep breaths, his heart pounding faster than it ever had before, and sweat flowing freely. Sybil rushed over the bear, barking madly. But Ferris needed tending to, he was still alive but barely. He had a large v-shaped gash running along his right flank. Billy removed his jacket, tearing it into pieces to bandage the wound as Sybil was now concerned over her friend’s wellbeing. One last glance over to see if Molly was down for good, he was. Billy wiped the sweat from his forehead and picked up Ferris, carrying him past Jim Parker’s dead body, over to his truck. Slipping Ferris barely conscious body onto the seat, Sybil scooted by onto the floorboard to guard her friend. Billy ran around the front of the truck, hopped into the drivers’ seat and took off in a mad rush for his home. They were back at Cracker Hill in a matter of a few short minutes. Sybil jumped out of the truck, following Billy and Ferris into the house. Billy laid the dog onto his bed and had a quick look at the injury. Removing the torn jacket turned bandage, the cut was a good one. Billy started to heat some water to make it clean. He then pulled out his sewing kit and some cotton, iodine and linen bandages from his medical kit. Ferris was whimpering is his semi-conscious state. Sybil was anxious and spinning around, feeling helpless as dogs can be. Then Billy soaked a clean towel into the heated water and began to wash the wound as Ferris jerked. Picking up the sewing kit, Billy began to thread a medium size needle with some strong cotton thread. Sybil had then hopped onto the bed as if to survey the situation. Billy pinched the wound at the joint of the cut, and jabbed the needle in to join the two parts of loose flesh together as it once was. Ferris meowed and winced in some near conscious pain, but Billy kept sewing the cut together. After forty-five minutes the gash was closed nicely. Billy poured out iodine onto some clean cotton and wiped the wounded to cleanse it as well as he could. Meanwhile Sybil was a model of attention, she observed everything he had done. She seemed particularly amazed at his composure. Billy finally finished by wrapping the wound with some fresh bandages. Exhausted, Billy emptied the bottom of his whisky down his throat as he flopped into his old rocker. Sybil cuddled up to Ferris, keeping him warm all the while keeping an eye on Billy. It was an eventful day contrary to Billy Whiskers’ expectations. A couple days later, Sheriff Rod Harris and his wife Annie came by. The county had paid off on the bounty for Molly’s demise so Sheriff Harris had to pay Billy off. But there were questions that needed to be asked and Jim Parker’s death had to be conclusively investigated. They parked outside of the Cracker Hill homestead, exited the car and knocked onto the flimsy door. “Come in!’ answered Billy. He was in a better mood. Ferris was coming around very nicely and eating food today. “Well howdy do there Whiskers?” asked Annie who always had a fond spot for Billy’s scruffy ways. “Fine Annie, how’s yeah doing Sheriff?” The sheriff handed Billy an envelope with the bounty money inside. “Here’s your pay Billy. Gonna have some questions about what happened at Parker’s farm to be able to file my report.” Billy nodded with a sad confirmation, “When the funeral?” “Early next week in town. His daughter is taking care of everything, poor soul!” Replied Annie. Sheriff Harris finished his inquiry with Billy, leaving him to conclude his own affairs. Meanwhile Ferris and Sybil were playing quietly outside. Later Billy Whiskers came out to fix a loosened fence with some rebar wire. Peace had returned back in his life. He was amazed though at just how much he loved his dogs, and he got the sense that hey loved him too.

Hi Gilles,
This isn't the best place to put your story. Trying making a new post and then folks will more likely see and it and respond. This is just a discussion about the board in general.

Does anyone have time to sort through all the entries here and assess whether there's enough for a book project?

Here's a short one guys.
When selfish action steals the love-light from my eyes and the gift that lies within my heart denies I'll glance across those shallow fields where seeds of copper give praise to gold and I'll curse the ground where frozen hands throw dice where servants lives have rolled.
I hope I have posted on the correct thread?
