I don't know if I can do it for that measly pay. Thanks Tom! Apparently all one has to do is write the score. A symphony orchestra will record it. Interesting... Bes, John

Not sure if I have the time right now Tom. Between a contemporary classical piano project and the Shout Box I'm quite busy. Unless someone else can look after Wy on the Shout Box while I'm gone. He takes special care - a bit unstable lately. I wonder what kind of film it is? I’ll go back and check. Thanks again Tom. Best, John

And to think I lost my Mozart hat. I bet they could license an obscure work already in the can for those clajones. Do you suppose these folks even know about Mozart, Schonberg, etc.

My friend Ferrell Stowe was flown to Hollywood to play on the soundtrack of a feature film, the composer/musical director for that project told Ferrell that he gets one million dollars per film.
Razzy and I did the score for a low budget sci-fi movie a few years ago. We did the score as well as some foley work just for a the experience or we would have charged more. It was a LOT of work for the money.
Thirty grand doesn't sound like too much for the amount of work. If it's a one-man operation it will take a long time and a whole lot of work, if it's a band, then it goes quicker but everyone splits the money somehow, if it's a producer hiring folks then they'd better know how to time it to sync and be hiring people who play dead on to click.
I was hired years ago to write the score for a Holiday Inn worldwide conference. It took two solid weeks of work to write, arrange and transcribe the score. I made pretty good money for that.
In this case, for a symphony score, that can be done much easier with Sibelius or something similar. Go for it, John, you're a natch.
You've got to know your limitations. I don't know what your limitations are. I found out what mine were when I was twelve. I found out that there weren't too many limitations, if I did it my way. -Johnny Cash It's only music. -niteshift Mike Dunbar Music

There's a few problems with this post. 1. Don't know what the actual budget of the film is. If it's a multimillion dollar film, then $30,000 is not worth it. 2. They're not saying how many actual minutes or cues. 3. There's no mention of the writer keeping his writer share. 4. If it truly is no royalties (which implies no writer's share)... Then it's a horrible deal.
Scoring even for low budget short films is a lot of work. Not only with the writing but the mock ups as well.
Plus this guy wants someone with experience doing feature films. Most composers I know with experience like that already make more than that, knowing the actual work that goes into it.
Finally, this is a craigslist post. That's kinda odd in my mind. Are they looking for professional composers with experience or bottom scraping for students who are coming out of film school?

"If it's a multimillion dollar film, then $30,000 is not worth it."As you mentioned Jodi, doubt they would advertise on Craigslist. They'd probably use one of the elite composers. "They're not saying how many actual minutes or cues."Good question Jodi. More or less work for the composer is an important factor. Also the kind of film would necessitate different degrees of composing. They mentioned being able to write for string quartets. If strings are basically what they're looking for, it wouldn't be nearly as time-consuming as writing for full orchestra. John
