Hi Folks- I signed on to WordPress just recently. Not so much for actual blogging, but to learn the ropes, and to place "notice of copyright" on my works. Any tips to make this site better? Can't figure out how to delete pics from my posts- change the font style and size- I read a lot of the help, but it may take a while to figure things out. Or any sites that explain how one can get hits....learn how to customize web-sites etc.? I did submit a few of these writings to GUIDEPOSTS MAGAZINE. The first post BLUEBIRDS CAN FLY IN THE RAIN got an enormous amount of feedback on JPF's Lyric feedback forum several years ago; about 67 hits. I added pics, and it came out really good. I may record it when I get my financial act together. Tnx Cal www.starseeker777.wordpress.com

Hi Cal! I found the package with the pics in it that I got back from the developer, and when I saw your profile pic, it made me smile...that's one of the pics I took in front of the Sutler, back in 2005. I miss that old bar...it's just a vacant storefront now...urban renewal. Ha!

Hi Slim-
Yes...those were some great times.
Thanks for the visit... and of course, I will give you a heads up when I have a chance to get down to Nashville.
Yep; I sure miss that old music town.

Hi Cal, to get "hits" to your site you must be indexed by the search engines like Google, Yahoo, etc.. After being indexed you have to get your site as close to page one as possible. To do that you need some key words included in the text of your articles. It also helps to put the same key words into your URL but it's too late for that now. The URL (http: address) stays with you after creating it. You can't change it. Your site will never get to page one for key words like "Song Writing" (for example) unless you use that term in your posts. I Googled the term "Songwriting Forums", and JPF was on page one/number six. You also need back links from other sites pointing to yours. Not just sidebar links, but links that are included in text, or hyperlinks using your chosen key words in the link. Google gives these type of links authority. Their reason is that if other sites think well enough of yours to link to it for further info, than it has to be a safe site for those key words. Using your name as a key word only gets you on page one for your name. Think of a term that someone searching the search engines might type in to land on your site and use that term in your post headings and content, but don't over do it. The spiders will pick up on those key words and rank your blog accordingly. Remember that they give more authority to sites with prime back links. I have 11 blogs and at least 5 are on page one, some number one on Google for my key words. Here is how I learned about SEO (Search Engine Optimisation). This guy writes about making money with ads, but whether you want to make money or not is irrelevant. The bottom line is getting your site at the top of the search engines. A new industry was created for SEO, and he doesn't charge a dime. Lots of reading here. http://grizzlybrears.com/

Hey Ben-
Thanks for all of the information.
I am building a word doc; and will copy these JPF replies and study them.
I was aware of how important SEO is; particularly in web-site advertising and marketing per a book I read last year; THE COPYWRITER’S HANDBOOK by Robert W. Bly
Now to learn as much as I can.
Tnx

Cal, if it were me I'd register a domain name and use it to forward/redirect to your blog. Since you already have a word press subdomain I'm not sure how that would work, if at all. I have wordpress and other blogger tools in my host's applications list so if I decided to blog and go with that it would be a much easier transition. For any web presence you want the domain name/url to be something that can easily be remembered as well as found by the robots. A good tool for SEO is Attracta They have a free service that seems to work well. Use meta tags as well as other tools you'll find as you go along. Some people pooh pooh meta tags there are plenty of robots who search for them. Another way to get additional traffic is to use reciprocal links to bonafide sites that are somewhat related to your site. You do not really want to link to a subdomain unless it's really in tune with what your site is all about. I have a couple of subdomains on our links page at vasvw.org but they are directly related to our primary goal, to assist Blue Water Navy Vietnam Veterans and other Veterans groups such as Korean, Thailand, Cambodia and Laos, among others.

Anyone have a WordPress site?
I need help with my menu bar....I know there are other tabs available, but I only see two; a house (home) and my About tab...does anyone know how to change the bar to show all of my tabs?
Also, I read through help and support, but the info on how to change my font style, color, and size is real confusing...any help here???
I would like to know what catagories are and how to use them too.
Please be aware building a site like this is new to me.
All help is appreciated.
Tnx

I literally just started using WP too. It's awesome. Made this site for my wife. Http://starbrightmedia.co.uk .If you need any tips let me know. It's pretty easy if you just look through all the options and experiment.

Tnx for the visit James. I had another blog site but it wasn't very easy to get around. My friend who is a teacher at Eastern Michigan University and an avid writer/blogger, mentioned WordPress. So I deleted the old site and am now working on my www.starseeker777.WordPress.com site. Looks to be one of the best around, and as you mentioned, awesome. ~C~

Hi again-
While reading over the input posted by Ben Willis and Darklander, I started doing searches on my blog header,
NEED HELP? FREE PERSONAL ADVICE...LET'S TALK!
and my song lyric,
BLUEBIRDS CAN FLY IN THE RAIN
along with several of my other posts;
Wow! To my amazement, many came up in the number one position on AOL,
and they all came up in the number one spot on my Google searches.
I don't know what I did, but it seemed to work great.
