Hi Y'all... http://www.soundclick.com/bands/page_songInfo.cfm?bandID=908328&songID=11607988This is a 1995 4-track demo I recorded while living in Nashville, and heavily under the influence of Guy Clark and Townes Van Zandt. It never graduated to full production cuz it seemed out-of-sync with what was coming out at the time. Then I forgot about it for a dozen years or so, and only found it just now while in the process of trying to gather my pro stuff to upload to my future host, Bandcamp. So I thought I'd share it! I haven't been doing country lately, mostly modern classical for music production libraries. Please feel free to critique! Oh, btw, that last written verse is a "facsimile" of what I remembered writing for a possible second version, around that time. It never got recorded, but I included it, here. Thanks... ************************************************************** Magic Music Box (Michael Zaneski, 1995, All Rights Reserved) When I was ten I had a pocket radio I knew the words to all my favorite songs I listened with it underneath my pillow and all my friends would sing me all night long It was me and ma but they were just like family Buck and Marty, Dolly, Glen and Merle And ma was worried how I stood by Tammy Yeah Tammy was my very first best girl She was gentle on my mind Underneath my pillow Pickin' up Tulsa time far away as Amarillo I know Billie Jo's just layin' low Down in the boondocks It was more than just a radio My magic music box Oh I loved to tune it in to far 'way places The static sounded like how spacemen talked And I tried to picture how music could travel Could fly into my magic music box But then one day I lost my magic radio I kicked it running for the ice cream man And momma said "no big, I'll buy another" Oh momma momma you don't understand It was gentle on my mind Underneath my pillow Pickin' up Tulsa time far away as Amarillo I know Billie Jo's just layin' low Down in the boondocks It was more than just a radio My magic music box It was more than just a radio My magic music box

I love how you wove all the songs of that time into the chorus, a tapestry of memories for all who lived in that era. Very nicely done. This song is timeless. And the hook is superb, that transitional/transistor radio. great instrumental as well Mike. Guess I like this one lots.~~lol~~MFB III

A really cool tune Michael. Can't go wrong with Guy Clark and Townes Van Zandt...or Robert Earl Keen or Lyle Lovett or any of those Texas singer/songwriters. I'm not into Country per se but love those kind of people who defy categorization if categorization is a real word, lol. This fits in nicely. It's got some noise and hiss from the four track but that can be taken out. Be happy to do it for you if you can't do it yourself. I like the song references in there by the way.

Well done Michail in every way. It was hard critiquing this song because I was enjoying the wonderful melody and clever lyrics so much. I would like hearing this song arranged and recorded by a truely high end production studio! This one's ready to be pitched. steady-eddie.

Just a few lyric tweaks below, keep or sweep I listened to it underneath my pillow and all my friends would sing me all night long Oh I loved to tune it in to places far away (seems to fit meter better)But then one day I lost my magic radio

You don't look that old? You must truly have a love of country music, then, to know those old tunes. I don't think Billy Jo Royal's "Down In The Boondocks" was a big country hit, though, that one was a pop hit, I think, and may have then crossed over. Great song though! Thanks again. Mike

Donna On deck, and batting "clean-up" LOL...having tons of fun, for sure. Thanks Donna! I wasn't ever a good soloist. I remember having to break that solo down into like, 8 parts, and it took me 4-5 days to finally do it in one take. I was actually a big Glen Campbell fan when I was that young, and did have a transistor radio, which I adored, around the age of 13-15...I eventually came to love Buck Owens and all the other greats I mentioned... See ya 'round! Mike

Hi Michael, This is a very cool traditional country song. I noticed you didn't sing the last verse and I agree you don't need it but if you wanted to you could change the structure a little and make a cool bridge out of it. I love this line; Oh momma momma you don't understand I can feel so much emotion in that line. Anyway I think you have a very cool song. Dottie

How can I not like a song with the name "Tammy" in it? But, it did remind me of a relative that used to call me "Tammy Wynette" in a terrible fake southern drawl....LOL! Enough about my psychosis!! LOL!
I really liked this and could connect with the lyric, nice one!!

That is a very interesting reverie song with a lot of detail.
I am gonna have to look up some of those names, but those little radios were cool. I had to put mine by the window to get a clear tone though.
Cute little song, Michael.

Hi Mackie, Can I call you "Capsman?" I think that would be a great nickname for you! Me, it was actually KHJ in Los Angeles, mostly, a top forty station. But I listened to some country too. Thanks for the encouraging words. Mike

Stevie Wow! A fellow Guy and Townes fan! I also love Keen (have you heard "Merry Christmas From the Family" ? That song changed my life!) and Lovett. I just realized...about the song references, that "Billie Jo's just layin' low" maight be confusing, since "Billy Joe Royal" sang Down in the Boondocks" --the next line in the song! So maybe I should change those lines "I know Billie Jo Mcallister's/down in the boondocks" Anyway, it's great to know you are a kindred spirit of the Texas roots music scene, or whatever they're calling it these days... Mike Hey Mike. Yeah I'm really familiar with Merry Christmas From the Family. I've got about every song REK has recorded and ALL of Lyle's. I've got cassettes of Lyle's that I need to replace with CDs. Still have several of his in CD form. Saw Lyle in concert back in '96 and had second row, center seats. Best concert I've been to along with McCartney, and I guess you know what a Beatles fan I am so that's saying a lot. His Large Band is amazingly tight in concert and goes from Country to Jazz to Rock to Big Band in a flash. Get your hands on Lyle's Step Inside This House double CD. He put it out about 10 years ago but he recorded it in tribute to many of his fellow Texas songwriters from Townes to more obscure writers like Steven Fromholts. He does great renditions of all their songs. A couple of Guy Clark songs on there as well including the CD title Step Inside This House. It's great. Stevie Stevie

Hi E Swartz,
These things run in cycles; I'll probably wind up making country demos again, especially since moving back to Nashville, one of these days, remains a distinct possibility.
Glad you enjoyed it!

Thank again, Mike

Tammy Okay, Tammy, a big smile on my face with the ipod comment. Did you ever hear Tammy Wynette sing? Of course you have, at LEAST "Stand By Your Man"....it's like...she goes to the Mohave Desert, then walks through it while listening to...maybe George Jones and Patsy Cline...I mean...she sounds SOOOO dry mouthed when she sings, that some of those vowels just don't want to come out! They're saying "Tammy, this is your 'e sound' I'm on strike 'til club soda..." ...her and Emmylou...they just sound like that...I can't imagine they actually dehydrate themselves to sing? Thanks for brightening my day. Mike

Cute little song, Michael.
Doug Hi Doug, "how I stood by Tammy" refers to Tammy Wynette's big hit "Stand By Your Man" Glen Campbell's "Gentle On My Mind" was the first album I ever bought. Wallach's Music City, Los Angeles, Ca. 1968... "Livin' On Tulsa Time" may have been Don Williams, and anachronistic, if it came out in the seventies... 'Billie Jo' refers to the girl who jumps off the bridge in "Ode To Billie Joe" which still haunts me, to this day, when I hear it... "Down In the Boondocks" was a cross-over hit for Billy Jo Royal, and that fact might confuse some people, cuz "Billie Jo" is in that same line... Glad you enjoyed it. Mike

Stevie Stevie Stevie, Of all the Texans, Lovette has been the hardest to warm up to, and it's because he is like the Randy Newman of Alt Country. Maybe too damn clever for his own good. I think his voice is fantastic, and I know that he's a great writer, but I haven't been able to bring myself to his work...and maybe that's because I am a little intimidated by it? That sounds about right...I will listen to those you have named... For Keen, "West Textures" is still my favorite. How can you beat "Sonoras Death Row", "The Road Goes On Forever" and, for something more tender, "Jennifer Johnson and Me" ...to me, everything he has done since then has been good, but not great, like "West Textures" --that album walloped me when it came out... Never been a big McCartney fan; preferred GH and JL...Scorsese just produced a fantastic documentary on the life of GH--George Harrison...my love for the man grew tenfold... Thanks for the fun conversation. Mike

I like the gentleness of the music and sway of the melody. I also like how you sing it...there’s something in your voice....and the “far away” in the chorus sounds so cool. It’s definitely one to share (meaning “live” too!)...I think audiences will love it! Kristi

Kristi Hey there friend, Yeah, I was trying to emulate Guy Clark's background singers from his early albums, for their country swing feel...doing that on 4-track just meant standing about a foot further from the mic...back then I had a decent falsetto for those parts; years have tended to Leonard Cohen-ize my voice, somewhat... Thanks for the nice thoughts, Kristi. Mike

Good tune Ive listen to it well Ive lost count of how many times.
Your vocal reminds me of Eddie Rabbit on this tune.
What did you think of that alternate ending?
Cheers Paul

Hey thanks, Paul,
It's a 17 year old four track demo; I like the idea of the only solo going there, and then a repeat of the first verse after that, with another chorus, and then a final ending on "box"
That way I get to fit in v4 where I kick the radio...
So while I wasn't crazy about the sound of the same solo in two places, I would never have considered a third version, where v4 goes where the first solo is NOW, and then where you put a solo/fade, that would be the actual (only) solo, then a repeat of v1...I only got that thanks to you putting that solo there...of course I am talking about picking up a 17 year old project, and pursuing it...maybe one day when I have time...but look what I mean:
V1/V2/Ch/V3/V4/CH/Solo/V1/CH/Ch & end on "box"...
So big thanks on that!
Mike

Howdy Mike
Its a fun tune, and I needed to learn how to use this recording software, like I said in the email wasnt trying to step on your creative toes.
After looking at your projected structure for the tune, Im wondering if a bridge rather than a verse wouldnt work better... Just a Thought.
Cheers Paul

Cheers Paul Paul, I presume you mean after where the projected solo would be: V1/V2/Ch/V3/V4/CH/Solo/ V1/CH/Ch & end on "box"... It's worth thinking about...but begs the question, what else could the singer talk about, there? Whereas a return to V1 there is the singer, having told the whole tale of his radio and how it finally broke, decides to go back to the beginning of the memory, and focus on that happier part of the story... Technically a bridge would be what's called for there, in most country tunes...but I'm not sure that it would work in this one...I'll give it some more thought, though! Mike

Mike,
I really enjoyed this one a lot. It definitely brings back memories of the old transistor radio. Graet lyric, it is wonderfully crafted and brought back long forgotten memories.
Thank you for possting.

Hi Mike
Actually I was thinking the fourth verse has a bit of a turn in the story and as a bridge itself I believe it would work.
The radio gets broken and for the first time in the story he is trying to convey the Magic Persona to another player in the story by saying "you dont understand". A new event I guess a new element to the story.
Maybe Im reading it wrong.

Cheer Paul No, you read it right. He's saying "you don't understand" to his 'momma'. By turning V4 into a bridge, you are basically saying change the music there, make it "lift" etc...sure, that would work, and for the very reasons you mentioned. At the time, I was going for simple & old-timey; but I could hear a bridge there, that goes to the relative minor, and then maybe resolves through the major 2 to the 5. Mike

Hi again Mike
Sorry for being vague the first time on the bridge suggestion, Im new to songwriting and sometimes vague is as clear as I can be. Im always surprised when someone thinks well of one of my songs.
But yeah you get it, thats what I was hearing as well, the attractive sidestreet on the landscape of the song.
Cheers Paul

Danny Thanks for listening, Danny, and I'm glad you enjoyed it. I may have to actually put some energy into a proper demo, when I have time. Mike

Cheers Paul Not vague at all, Paul! I might actually find some time to work on this again soon. Singing like that comes easy to me. I play a few Guy Clark albums, and I fall into his laid back sandy voiced style. Now, the background singing is another thing altogether. I don't have much falsetto anymore--I'd have to rethink those completely, or maybe have Ms. Morris help out on that. Mike

Hey Michael, very catchy and well done! Singing and harmony is spot-on. The type of tune one will be humming all day after listening to it. Best, John

Best, John The way I wrote back then was a) listen to a song you really like ... b) get the rhythm of the melody strongly in your head c) write a new lyric to that dummy melody d) (to paraphrase you...) recompose the damn thing...haha... Thanks John. I found a bunch of goodies on old archived DATs and CD's that I am surprised still played. I was wise enough to transfer every tape I owned to digital about a decade ago--then promptly moved on, forgot about them...ah, the memories! Mike
