The Top Ten Things I Missed About JPF

I was gone three years, and I honestly don't know how much time I can spend these days, and having just thought about all these things, I am overwhelmed with emotions--a strange mixture of joy and guilt, with a knowledge that I might regret posting this in the morning. I hope I don't embarrass anyone too seriously, cuz I love you all, and missed you horribly. smile Anyway...top ten...

10) Having "animated discussions" with Big Jim...

Big Jim and I are alike in many ways. He equals my passion when it comes to expressing how he feels about things. He is also part of a singing heritage that I admire greatly--Dick Gaughan, Robin Williamson, Paul Buchanan (of The Blue Nile)...he has taken some "shots" from me, and come back, unflinching. I thoroughly respect him, and hope one day we can sit down and have a pint together.

9) Trying to get Tampa Stan to incorporate my words/ideas into his lyric...

I love Tampa, and I think I am a much better writer, because of him. We used the same "method" with each other--we'd offer words and suggestions (keep or sweep) that we thought could improve the other's work. I think alot of the time I was just trying to impress him...maybe trying to get his fatherly approval...this was often frustrating, but ultimately rewarding, cuz I got real good at coming up with great stuff. He bit once or twice. Tampa would offer words and sugs to me, as well...I'd bite, now and then, but mostly not...I imagine more than a few of those times, his sugs/lines were better than my own, the ones I kept.

8)Reading Robert George

The quality of this guy's work made me very jealous, at times, but mostly, it was a source of endless inspiration.

7)Getting wired by JPF, and forgetting I had a life

...or perhaps, realizing that I had NO life, LOL? When I did JPF, I did it like crank, and often was a bit neglectful on the home front. As my health care provider duties increased, this became problematic...still there was nothing quite as fun as jumping in, head first, and swimming for hours and hours...

6)Listening to Louis Twinn's voice

Technically not a great singer, but Louis had a way to connect to his songs that would nearly always move me, often to tears. Scott and Rikki told me I wasn't alone. smile

5) Listening to Kaufman's demos

If I was an indie producer with my own label, I would attempt to woo this guy out of his pizza parlor or bedroom--where DID he record? Because of the quality of his work, I learned how to make myself go that extra mile, striving for quality, with "however-long-it-takes" as my mantra.

4)Collabs

Collabing with Kristi was such great fun! We worked well together. What an adventure that was!

Getting many of you to shout "hey!" so I could incorporate that into that deviant version of Calvin and Joice's "Good Girls and Bad Boys" --how much fun was that! Then faking a Siberian radio station that had just played a Mark Kaufman song! LOLOL...

Getting that collab going where the musicians chose and set lyricists--that might be my favorite overall thing. I pushed for that to happen, and I came away knowing that it made lotsa lyricists proud and happy. I studied Jagger to try to sing like him (Bottle of Jezebel)--it was the most fun I ever had with a vocal, and I realized how uptight I was, as a singer, cuz singing Jagger is all bark and swagger, and I have neither. LOL.

3)Discovering new talent

How often I would read or hear something amazing by someone new. I remember this one guy did this big choral arrangement through his awful PC microphone, but it was this really beautiful, unique, mostly choral piece. The guy had obvious compositional talent. He uploaded the one song, answered a few critiques, then he was gone! Never to be heard of again...but I just spent an
hour, and found him on Soundclick! Bobby Buoncuore - "Save Me Some Daylight"

http://soundclick.com/share?songid=7286260

2)Feeling Immersed In Beauty

Almost daily, I would find something that made me feel glad to be alive. Ian Ferrin set a lyric written by his ten year old niece, called "Inner Tubing", and it just made me cry, every time I heard it! I still think about that, and wished I could understand how a piece meant for a child could move me so much. Ian connected with that vocal, and perhaps I felt childlike and innocent and full of possibilities, when I listened. Only Tori Amos' "1000 Oceans" has moved me as much, listen after listen.

1) The ladies

For some reason, the gals just generally wrote a more personal song, and I connected to that. There were so many...I'll just mention a few...Ricki had layers to her lyrics that made me read and reread them, getting new understandings with every new reading. Beth seemed to hide a tad, at times, behind her wit, but was as equally deep. Kristi is as unique a "voice" as they come. Donna seemed able to write in any style, but it always felt real. Joice Marie's more than a songwriter, she's a true artist, in the sense that she has absorbed all the hidden rules and now just writes "herself", and it's a beautiful thing. Lynn's lyrics were usually so metrically perfect, I'd hear singing with them, from the very first read. Wendy. Wendy and I both dug Leonard Cohen, and we understood what we were both trying to do artistically. I just loved her singing so much! She would be the other artist I would try to sign to my label. With her and Kaufman in my stable, I could die happy. smile

Three years went by so fast...

Mike

Nice list and welcome back. It is hard to moderate our addictions, but I try to find some balance in all these internet musings.

Glad to see a veteran slip back in. Nice tributes too! I hope new folks coming through will read them and realize this isn't some flame war board or filled with anonymous jerks, but instead real people who form a real community. I reminds me a little of some of the small rural towns we'd stumble through in Ireland where everyone is a character and even the rivals and enemies were friends when it was them against an interloper, but who also warmly welcomed in anyone else who didn't pee on the carpets and spit in the snacks. It takes a little time and effort but once you're hooked, it can really change your life.

Thanks Michael,

Brian

Hey Mike:

How nice it is to see you back! I too miss the passion that drove both your music and your postings here.

I have been missing in action for a couple months now - driven by responsibilities at work. And, like you, I feel a huge hole... smile

Glad to see you are still as passionate as ever!

Welcome home, Mike:

Your post was a "peek into the past" and you mentioned a few names some of us have never heard... plus a few who continue to "plod along" relentlesly here at JPF.

Thanks for sharing all that with us. You have real writing skills and may be missing your calling as a web-logger or novelist.

Most of us have had the privilege of being able to argue with Big Jim. Though I disagree with him on a few areas of discussion, I enjoy and respect his willingness to "plunge on" ...unmoved and unphased by my attempts to "save his soul."

Good to have you back.

Hey Mom go tell Dad
Hey Dad go tell Gran
I made the top 10
I got me a fan
I’m perfectly metered
Songs sing off the page
Now how’s that for news
It’s quite the big rage
And you think that’s something
Well listen to this
I’m with Hall of Famers
Yeah I made the list
Like Bethie and Rickie
And yes Joice Marie
Wendy, Kristi and Donna
Yet he mentions me
I’m gushing and blushing blush
But humble as pie
Cause Seuss is the master
That’s why he’s my guy
And though he’s not with us
But up in the clouds
He loves a good meter
So I’ve done him proud!!!!

Thanks Mike!! smile

Hey Nige!

Thanks...I think you're right...two years and change...I was using my mom's stroke, when she became bedridden, as my point of reference/departure from JPF, and that was in November of 2009. I became overloaded by duties a few months before that...maybe I did both for awhile.

I've been learning how to cope with taking care of my mom whose been bedridden and whose Alzheimer's makes her quite scared/paranoid/confused...she has two, three good weeks, then out of the blue it gets bad. The hard part for me was getting used to that pattern, so I could kinda brace myself for that.

I gave up making serious demos, and just started making "art music" and visual art. I love art that results from transforming one thing (pre-existing movie scene, a field recording, a photograph, etc.) into something else that, because of the process involved, comes out looking/sounding completely different...I guess it's "trasformative art" ...letting my inner Eno shine forth. I just got tired of left clicking notes onto a piano roll, which got to be too linear for me, at the time.

I always enjoyed your music; it's usually fun stuff, reminding me to not take things so seriously...a little like Julian Cope's stuff, before he got into big rocks. grin I'll try to find some time to give a listen to your recent work. Cheers!

Mike

Hey Kevin!

You never struck me as one with any manic tendencies.

I quit drinking and smoking cigarettes and pot at least a decade ago...but then hanging out here started to give me the same kinda dopamine hit that I used to get elsewhere.

So I felt the need to focus completely on my health care work for a while, and try to re-organize my brain!

But we are who we are, and I will always be a thin-skinned guy who throws himself, maybe a little too much, into what he does...lol...it does have its perks, lol...

I remember your songs, and still hear your walking song in my head. James Taylor can take a bus. grin

Thanks Calvin,

I've enjoyed your work, as well...from your lyrics I gather you are a concise, complex, mysterious, and off-beat guy...one-of-a-kind, for sure...I'll be listening. smile

Brian

Thanks Brian,

When I see new people come through, I am pushed and pulled in so many ways; especially when they give off signs of wanting to learn and grow, and have obvious talent.

Like Bobby Buoncuore, who was that "new talent" I talked about. Here was a guy who had obviously studied music--coming up with all these outside harmonies that seemed to work in his song. But his recordings were so horrible, and I focused on that, when I critiqued him, and I think I may have scared him off! Then upon going to his Soundclick, I notice that he writes sporadically, with nothing in several months--that kinda depresses me, cuz I feel like--here's this amazing talent that's pursuing something else. Then I think about the events in my own life, in the last few years...so it all makes sense that I return, now...

You mention jerks...compared to other places, JPF has always been relatively jerk free, and that's in this practically anarchic environment that you have created, that pretty much lets us be who we are, very few holds barred. That says alot about its founder, cuz a place's personality tends to trickle down from the top. There will always be a certain jerk element. Hey at times, the jerk was probably me, grin ...

I hope you are in good health Brian, thanks for the warm welcome back!

Hey Mike,

It’s great to see you around these parts again! You are always so passionate and your crits so generous and helpful. I have learned TONS from you....and your energy is contagious and adds so much to the work you do. And I have missed that energy here.

JPF is like a soft place to fall, and whether we come here every day or every few months, it’s a wonderful place to share our love of music and writing with everyone and genuinely help one another. AND have a little fun too! Once you’re a part of that...you’re always a part of it I think! smile

Thank you for the very nice comments in your Top 10...hey! smile Collabing with you was such fun....I think you have a unique "voice" too and we have some great songs now, don’t we? I agree with Joice to sing, sing, sing your heart out!

Keep creating, keep contributing, keep ‘em comin’!

Kristi

Hi Donna,

Thanks, Donna smile

Well, you are an amazing lyricist and songwriter, and your versatility is rather humbling. It's usually a bit difficult finding something helpful to add, when critiquing your work, without feeling like I'm being a little nit-picky.
See ya round campus...

Hi Joice,

I have thought about you often, and am so happy to hear from you!

You are too kind, JM...listening to you, and you & Cal...was ALWAYS fun. Your songs came from a lot of the same places I'd been...we share many of the same influences...I was sometimes a stickler on your musical renderings, I'm glad you see I was coming from a caring place with that.

Ha! You know me too well...yes, I have no confidence in my singing...I do everything short of autotune...you know that I composite several "takes" together--and I still believe in this--for "vocalists" like me who are not real singers...

Well...I can understand not posting a lot; I DO hope you are giving your creativity an outlet of some kind, though. You have an abundance of it--and you don't want your muse to wandering off, now...

Really REALLY good, hearing from you, Joice. smile

Mike

Hi Scott,

Great to hear from you, too!

I'm sorry to hear your work is stealing a bit of your creative time away. Life can become meaningless pretty fast without it!

You have kept the "folk tradition" alive for me, by choosing material you really had a lot of feeling for, and then always shedding some new light...it was easy to hear your enthusiasm...

And your songwriting! You continue to grow as a songwriter and performer...I'll be listening to the work of yours that I missed, while I was gone...I do a lot of art, these days, and I find it's a perfect listening environment!

Good to hear from you!

Mike

Thanks Dave,

I am flattered you see novel-writing chops in my musings. I would need a Harper Lee kinda set-up, a year free and clear of any other duties, just me and the book. Maybe I will go crazy writing up grant proposals, some time, couldn't hurt!

As for plodding--I'd call that "sticking with it" --a good quality to have. One can avoid great, Sisyphean falls by choosing smaller inclines, but where's the fun in that? I say, plod mercilessly up that hill! Go Dave, GO!!!

Hi Lynn,

LOL...

You're so funny!

I can see you singing your way through the day, like that!

It's true, you take the cake, you are a composers dream. Any composer who can't hear music while reading you, can't hear music, period.

It's great seeing you so happy. smile

Hey Glyn,

Thanks! It feels good to be back; I hope you've been well.

Hey! I finally got a broadband connection, after all these years, and it's completely wireless! It looks like a USB flash drive, just shove it in a USB port, and instant internet! I mention this, cuz as I remember, you and I were two of the last to have dial-up, but that was a few years ago...

See ya,

Mike

Well...I just hope it's not a health issue or something like that?!?

Just remember to keep doing something with that creative brain of yours.

Like I told Scott I'd do with him, I will certainly grab a handful of your songs and listen while making art, and perhaps send you a PM or email, letting you know my favorites and maybe even a nit here and there...

Take care,

Mike

I saw your "welcome" on the Christian thread, and did respond, I hope you saw it!

But yea...lol...you gotta love an "official welcome" lol...thanks...

Hey! I'll check out your work, for many reasons--you being one of the few who pursues instrumentals...have you been keeping up with some of these fantastic virtual instruments? I am so glad I held out for a good "strings" package, cuz I bought LASS (L A Scoring Strings) which runs through the Native Instruments "Kontakt" engine, and the scripting makes them instantly playable. No more tweaking and tweaking for hours. In fact you can throw an "un-arranged" piano part at one of the full section scripts (legato, staccato, spicatto, etc.), and it automatically sorts them out, and in the case of the legato ones, creates the right amount bending up, into the target note, and sounds pretty damn authentic and tone wise it's verrry full...so I'm pretty happy about that...been going crazy with Eastwest stuff too...OH! have you heard some of the physically modelled pianos? If you're sick of samples, at least SOME instruments have great "physical models" (read: small footprint, math based software) Modart's "Pianoteq" can sound like ANY make or build of piano, and any never built piano, simply by tweaking a few controls...and all the Wallander Wind instruments...oh man...

Anyway, I sure there will be "shop talk" in our future!

Good to hear from you, and I'll pull up some of your recent work and give it a listen, when I can. wink

Thanks Stan,

You are too kind. I need go to Amazon to see if there exists a warm fuzzy thermos, so I can save some of this feeling for later, when I might need it!

Coffee and smoking prevented the onset of you prostate cancer? I always new that Woody Allen's movie "Sleeper" was prophetic!

Right now I'm doing a lot of visual art. The few musical projects have been all of the modern classical/experimental variety...I just got totally burnt out on linear writing...but these things tend to run in cycles...so...you never know!

Yeah, I was raised Catholic, went to Catholic school, and though I still think Catholic women are generally hotter, I have otherwise completely "abandoned my faith" which is just the stupid Catholic was of saying I actually thought a little about it. But seriously they have made some horrendous, unforgivable mistakes that I won't get into...and I feel a little bad...because those nuns were REALLY good teachers. The best.

I'll be around!

Hugs backatcha, big guy!

Hi Kristi,

Our songs will be heard around the world, if I get a chance! There must be an El Cheapo Supremo way to "blog n' busk" through England/Europe, without dying in a slasher hostel!

But for now, this is it...care-giving and visual art, and maybe a little music...singing? hah! if you gals only knew...I might make it through round one of Idol, but I am just a mere vocalist, not a "true" singer...woe is me!

Later on... smile

Well Hey There Mike!

Wow, there must be something in the water these days! Or maybe it's just Spring...the Time of New Beginnings? Everyone's coming out of the woodwork it seems!

I too have been MIA for ages...but everything happens for a reason I figure...so I'm hoping to dip my toes back in a bit more soon.

Sorry to hear you've been having such a trying time with your Mom. It's so difficult to see our parents aging.

Still, it seems as though you have a new handle on the process somehow, whereby you're able to revisit your old stomping grounds around here. I was thoroughly impressed with your exhaustive Top Ten List! It served as a nice stroll down memory lane for me, and I'm sure for the other JPF'ers who reviewed it as well.

Anyhoo, welcome back. I look forward to seeing you around smile ....

Beth

P.S. I will confess to being a bit bemused by your suggestion that I somehow "hide a tad, at times" behind my wit (gosh, I can't think of many people who like to talk about themselves as much as I do blush )....but since the assessment in its entirety seemed to yield a net compliment, I'll take it! grin

Hey Mike, not to deviate from your topic but besides being the "metermaid" I have a passion/interest in healing foods. Since you are pre-diabetic I didn't know if you knew the virtures of cinnamon. Apparently a half to one teaspoon a day can help regulate your sugar levels and naturally. You can add it to your tea or applesauce or whatever your fancy. Here's just one article but if you do a search there are dozens. Best of health Mike! Hope this helps!! smile

Cinnamon for Diabetes? A Half Teaspoon A Day Could Help Control Cholesterol
Posted: 04/ 3/11 09:49 AM ET
Submit this storydigg reddit stumble Researchers have been investigating a number of powerful natural agents that can help you stabilize your blood sugar, and once again, cinnamon has proven itself as a viable contender in the fight against diabetes, as the study in Diabetic Medicine reveals.(1)

One of cinnamon's most impressive health benefits is its ability to improve blood glucose control.

For example, just half a teaspoon of cinnamon a day has previously been shown to significantly reduce blood sugar levels, triglycerides, LDL (bad) cholesterol, and total cholesterol levels in people with type 2 diabetes. (2)

The more you can make use of natural therapies such as nutrition and exercise, the better your health will be.

However, as helpful as supplements like cinnamon can be, they should not be misconstrued as cures. They are not substitutes for proper diet and lifestyle choices. You cannot properly address your diabetes if you still maintain a sedentary lifestyle and poor dietary choices -- cinnamon supplementation or not!

How Cinnamon Can Benefit Diabetics

Below are five known ways cinnamon can be helpful to your metabolism:

1. Cinnamon can increase your glucose metabolism about 20-fold, which significantly improves blood sugar regulation. (4)

2. Cinnamon has been found to have "insulin-like effects" due to a bioactive compound, qualifying it as a candidate for an insulin substitute.

3. Cinnamon slows the emptying of your stomach to reduce sharp rises in blood sugar following meals, and improves the effectiveness, or sensitivity, of insulin.

4. Cinnamon actually enhances your antioxidant defenses. A study published in 2009 stated, "Polyphenols from cinnamon could be of special interest in people who are overweight with impaired fasting glucose since they might act as both insulin sensitizers and antioxidants." (5)

5. A bioflavonoid found in cinnamon called proanthocyanidin may alter the insulin-signaling activity in your fat cells.

Other health benefits of cinnamon include:

• Supporting digestive function

• Relieving congestion

• Relieving pain and stiffness of muscles and joints

• Reducing inflammation and symptoms of arthritis

• Helping to prevent urinary tract infections, tooth decay and gum disease

• Relieving menstrual discomfort

• Stimulating circulation with blood-thinning compounds

Clearly, adding ample amounts of cinnamon to your diet is incredibly safe and inexpensive. Just remember, unless you are adding it to a proper diet -- high in vegetables and extremely low in fructose and grains -- it is unlikely you will experience any benefit whatsoever.

Speaking of grains, what about whole grains and diabetes?

The Whole Grain Myth

The American Diabetes Association recently completed a 20-year longitudinal study (6) examining the connection between magnesium intake and diabetes. They found increased magnesium intake is associated with lower diabetes risk and decreased inflammation. Magnesium is required for the proper functioning of enzymes involved in your glucose metabolism.

Some have interpreted this to mean you should eat more grains, since grains tend to be high in magnesium. This is a grave mistake!

For example, Reuters (7) makes the statement,

"The results may explain in part why consuming whole grains, which are rich in magnesium, is associated with lower diabetes risk."
High magnesium intake may be associated with low diabetes risk -- but high grain intake is not!

While it is true that you do need a good source of magnesium, grains -- even whole grains --are not a good option, especially if you are diabetic. In fact, grains should be at the top of your list of foods to AVOID, right after fructose and other sugars, if you have issues with your insulin and blood glucose.

Why?

Because, just like sugar, grains are a primary cause of insulin resistance, which is at the root of diabetes (8). Grains typically lead to fatigue, brain fog, unstable blood sugar, intestinal bloating, increased fat storage, elevated triglycerides, and increased blood pressure.

Healthful Sources of Magnesium

Magnesium serves many important functions in your body, including reducing your risk of sudden death (9). It's been estimated that up to 80 percent of you are deficient in this important mineral. If you want to increase the magnesium in your diet, please stay away from grains and opt for healthier sources, such as:

• Avocados

• Raw pumpkin seeds and sunflower seeds

• Almonds

• Green vegetables, such as spinach and Swiss chard

• Raw broccoli

• Raw, organic cacao

• Black beans and navy beans

• Peas

Raw organic cacao might just be the number one source of magnesium out there, and offers a wealth of antioxidants to boot. Just watch out for the sugar content -- read those labels.

Other Great Anti-Diabetic Foods

It is important to understand that the vast majority of nearly all type 2 diabetics can cure their diabetes without drugs or insulin and by properly using diet and exercise. Aside from cinnamon and magnesium-rich fare, other foods shown to be particularly beneficial for diabetics include:

• Exercise. This is the key to lowering insulin and leptin resistance. Avoid the mistake of only using cardio. Start using shorter high intensity Peak 8 workouts and strength training which will radically jump start your metabolism

• Broccoli: Besides being rich in magnesium, broccoli can help reverse the damage diabetes inflicts on your blood vessels. The key is likely a compound called sulforaphane, which protects your blood vessels from cellular damage. (10)

• Probiotics: Researchers have found that bacterial populations in the gut of diabetics differ from non-diabetics, and that modifying the gut microflora with probiotics and prebiotics can help improve the health of diabetics.

• Green tea: A compound in green tea (epigallocatechin gallate, or EGCG) was found to stabilize blood sugar levels of moderately diabetic mice as well as Avandia, a drug that I believe is risky. (11)

• Mediterranean-style diet: A diet rich in fresh, organic vegetables and healthful fats (including saturated fats) and high quality proteins, but LOW in grains, can set you out on the right path.

Ideally, you'll want to customize your diet according to your nutritional type. To help you do this, I now offer my entire online nutritional typing test for free!

Please also remember about the importance of vitamin D as part of your overall health program.

Hi Beth,

I know...spring...something in me has awakened, and I just feel like being involved in stuff...unfortunately it also brings on histamine...oh well...God made Benedryll...lol...

I had no idea you've been gone...I hope you've been keeping your creativity afloat ...life can feel pretty empty without an outlet for that. smile

About my clumsy comment...maybe I should have simply spoken about myself...but the more intelligent, veteran writers among us, may have just one last thing that gets in the way of good writing, and that's ourselves. I know with me, the most difficult decisions often come from realizing that...there are certain lyrics where the brilliant, clever line, just doesn't fit the piece...that it betrays the mood. I come to that "kill your darlings" crossroads often, in my own writing...and honestly...I am usually too damn insecure, and in need of more instant approval, to even "see it" until much later...but I'm am getting a little better at understanding subtle things like "mood" and such...

Perhaps I was "projecting" these things onto you, cuz you are one of the most intelligent writers I've ever met, and you gotta admit, you can be pretty clever!...and...and...YES, when you first arrived here, you just gobbled everything up so fast, and were so "on" that I worried that there may have been some "insecurity" underneath all that...but that was long ago now...I mean, and meant no disrespect. You are a writer that I truly admire... smile

Anyway...I DO hope to see you 'round!

Be well. smile

Mike

Hi Lynn,

Wow! Thanks for all this useful information. I do know a lot of it, by heart, cuz I familiarized myself with the Glycemic Index years ago, since I manage my moms diabetes, and have successfully kept her numbers manageable, in spite of the fact that she is bedridden.

I knew cinnamon, like Chromium picolinate, can be useful in managing glucose levels, but I never was able to find all the info about it that you have provided here, so thanks!

My family has diabetes in it's history, mom's side...but I am sure I have brought it on, by changing to an overly sedimentary lifestyle.

Oh! I see stuff on magnesium. Again, something I knew about, but never investigated...well...I have to get over to Amazon and see if they have and over-the-counter stuff that is a "diabetic formula" with these things in them...I will read about them, here, and know they are on the way!

You are very thoughtful, Lynn, God bless you. smile

Mike
