pspencer1@embarqmail.com I entered some lyrics I had written in what I thought was a contest. I was immediately sent a contract by Paramount Music. I have tried to check out this company but have read a few emails saying the don't really do anything for you. Can anyone help me, has anyone had experience with this company? What would my next step be in trying to market my lyrics. I don't have the music, although I do play the piano. So I guess if I don't go with someone like that company I will need someone to write the music and make a demo. I wrote a couple of songs over 40 years ago, even had one published. I know things have changed since then, and I don't even remember the steps I took then. Please help.

Hi, PatS and welcome to JPF. There have a million discussions about this company. I think the jist of it all is to stay away from them.

Yes. I sent them songs last year. They said " Your songs are great but.......... we can make them sound better if you send us ....... $ for a proffessional demo" or words to that effect. I checked out their demo samples and thought they were pretty average. My advice is to post your lyrics on the lyrics forum here and ask if anyone is able to put music to them for a 50-50 share. There are talented folk here who may jump at the chance if your lyrics appeal to them. Vic

Please take the above advice....many sharks out there.....You can find ones here that will work as stated above and pros that can produce a simple guitar/vocal for as little as $50.00. Before you spend any money there are folks here that can help you...post what you have on the lyric boards and digest the comments you receive.....if you feel your lyrics are ready then you can make the next step....but you need to define your goals...are you writing for a cut or do yo just want something you can be proud of for friends and family. You need to answer those questions IMHO before proceeding into a serious monetary investment.

As the folks above stated, Paramount is not what you need. Lyrics are not marketable by themselves. You have to write music for them or find someone else who will. Post some on the lyric boards here and see what happens. You will also need to critique the work of others in order to get anyone interested in yours. Good luck.

Or you could just avoid them like the plague.... your choice.

Paramount will do exactly what the contract says they will do. But you may need to read what the contract says. And even then you may not understand what the contract says.
You may be agreeing, with your legally binding signature, to cut them in on your Publishing Royalties, Songwriting Royalties, and first-born male child. They know what they're doing. They count on you being a dreamer with cash who doesn't read the contract carefully or think about things like the duration of the deal, or just what happens when they fulfill their contractual obligations, whether you are satisfied with it or not.
I'm curious about why you thought it was a contest. Is that their usual modus operandi or is this some new tack they're trying?
There will always be another song to be written. Someone will write it. Why not you? www.garyeandrews.com

It was advertised as a contest with "prizes" going to the top winners. There wasn't anything on the website where I registered about them trying to get your permission and money to write your music. I thought it just didn't sound right, when they replied so quickly, offering a contract. It was then that I decided to do more investigating.
