Naturally with almost all the guitarists I saw live there were bassists. So these are just a few that stood out in my mind.

The first concert I saw was YES so the first bassist was Chris Squire. How spoiled is that? smile It's no wonder I couldn't relate to The Kiss albums my friends brought over. smile

Here are a few.

Chris Squire 2x
Verdine White 4x Perhaps my favorite (Earth Wind & Fire)

Jaco Pastorious 3x Once with Weather Report and said hi to him in the rest room of The Blue Note. Oh man was he something else.

Stanley Clarke 2x
Abe Laborial 2x
Lee Sklar 2x
John Entwhistle 4x
John Paul Jones 1x
Sting 2x
Tony Levin 2x
Marcus Miller 1x
Tony Franklin 2x
Andy West 1x Dixe Dreggs

I can't remember anymore right now smile

Thanks!
Peace Mike

Paul doesn't even have to play bass to stand out... he just has to stand there!

Paul McCartney. Mike, does knowing Carol Kaye on a personal basis count even though I've not seen her play live? We've corresponded for about a decade on her website forum and via email.

All great,

Come to think of it nearly every group or artist I ever saw was great therefore all the bassist were great. Great acts consist of great musicians who FIT the music there doing perfectly!

Thanks!

Wooot, you have bands overthere who could find a bass player??
I probably never paid much attention (I'm a guitar player)!

Lol

No, I've gained respect for the bass, since I've started playing one. It's really cool, and it brings a whole different kind of attention on the music.

I've seen Nathan East, NHØP, Chris Minh Doky and a lot of good local bass players. But to be honest, I'm awfully ignorant, I can never remember the bass players' names.

Would love to see Marcus Miller and Victor Wooten, though. Love Anthony Jackson too..

Here's my list:

Jaco Pastorius (with Word of Mouth)
Christian Mc Bride (with Chick Corea)
Henry Strzelecki (my main influence...recorded with Chet Atkins, Ray Charles, Gordon Lightfoot, Paul Simon...Henry encouraged me to switch from guitar to bass)
Bob Moore (recorded with Patsy Cline, Elvis, Bob Dylan, Moby Grape, Flatt and Scruggs, Sammy Davis Jr., Quincy Jones, Jerry Lee Lewis...gave me some great advice)
Michael Rhodes
Supe Granda (from the Ozark Mt. Daredevils, Supe used to sub for me on some gigs)
Jeff "Stick" Davis (from the Amazing Rhythm Aces, Jeff subbed for me also)
Victor Wooten (got to see him many times including a gig at a restaurant where he played solo bass all night long...and stunned everyone...back when he was first on the scene)
Lightning Chance (Patsy Cline's band)
Dave Roe (Johnny Cash's bass player, I got to sub for him in Cash's band for some tribute shows)
Phil Lesh
Bill Wyman
Daryl Jones
Will Lee
Bob Babbit (he also came out to one of my gigs, great guy)
Dave Pomeroy
Tina Weymouth
Dick Kniss
Rick Haynes
Kevin McCormick
Leland Sklar
Timothy B. Schmidt
Fred "Too Slim" LaBour
Larry Knechtel (Larry, one of the "Wrecking Crew" is best known as a pianist, won a grammy for "Bridge Over Troubled Waters." He also played bass, and played on "Mr. Tambourine man. I got to do some sessions with him. He was a great guy.)
Joey Spampinato
Michael Manring (at the JPF Awards Show)
Keith Horne (I actually got to play bass for him while he played pedal steel.)

I'll keep editing as I think of others.

You've got to know your limitations. I don't know what your limitations are. I found out what mine were when I was twelve. I found out that there weren't too many limitations, if I did it my way. -Johnny Cash

"The Apostle" Paul Martin (who has been in numerous bands, in numerous different posts, is the son-in-law of Duane Allen of the Oak Ridge Boys, and is now in Marty Stuart's band).
Bee Spears (Willie Nelson's bassist who died in 2011)
Steve Harris (Iron Maiden)
Ollie Riedel (Rammstein)
Danny Miranda (when he was with Queen + Paul Rodgers)
Dean Elliott (bassist for the Spirit Band)

Would love to see: Brian Glenn, Steve Arnold, Alan Bartram (Del McCoury Band/Travelin' McCourys), and Mike Barber (Gibson Brothers)

Would have seen if I had the chance: John Deacon

From my hometown: Paul McCartney (got some good stuff, but not who I would see in concert)

I've Seen a lot of bands with talented bass players, having seen Rush a few times, Geddy Lee comes to mind. Having grown up in the Buffalo NY area I was fortunate enough to see Billy Shean dozens of times. For my money, he was certainly the best I ever saw. He He was truly amazing to hear and watch live. Ironically, the biggest commercial success he ever had was a song called "The one to be with you" while playing with MR. Big. I say ironically, because the bass run in this song is so simple a novice could play it. I guess when he got older he realized a great musician knows when to pull back for the sake of a great song.
