I had one of these about a week ago. It gave me some pretty mixed emotions...

Solo Piano

Chance Encounter with an Old Lover

All comments/critiques appreciated. I could redo this one, even from scratch if you have a good insight.

"Drifting" emotions is a good way to describe this track. Catchy theme. Nice library track. I'm sure it will be used.

Pam, Dottie, Jan and John - Thanks very much guys for checking out the tune. My main composition question about this tune is whether the B section is strong enough? (The loud section about 1/3 of the way thru) and if it should be repeated? The form of this is basically ABA with a lot of A. Apparently it doesn't bug you guys too much?

Peace,

Ian

I think it works well as is. However...

I can hear the B section (or variation there of) used as the coda. Maybe an ingenious mixture of both sections in the coda???

This track ignites the same feelings I had when I heard Dave Grusin's theme to "On Golden Pond". I wish I composed it. grin

Hi Ian,

very nice and pleasant tune, that I really enjoyed. I think the B section could be repeated, but I would add some strings the second time.

All the best

Jimmy and John - Thanks guys. I'm going to play around w/ this composition, see what I come up with.

Mackie - Thanks much. It wasn't exactly enjoyable, but it did put me in a mood.

John - That's an extraordinarily kind comparison. That comment made my week! Thanks so much.

Thanks guys!

Hey Ian:

I'm not much for critiquing instrumentals - they either seem to work for me or not. This one does. smile

That's some nice playing. And it's cool to hear how a melody can be inspired by an encounter - that's often the way it works for me too.

Personally, I like an ABA structure - it's like a three act play. smile

A nice piece Ian.
I like the structure just fine.
If you decide to repeat, I think strings on the second go round is a good idea.

I've been banging on the piano lately but I can't get to sound this good.

Yeah, this is really nice Ian! No problems with a lot of A section, on the contrary, it gives the track a thick identity, and you provide nice edit points in between sections.

It's just a really nice piece of music. I could easily hear more arrangement a la Dave Grusin or Pat Metheny, but it really works well as is, Imo.

One of your best so far, Ian!

Ps. maybe the title could reflect the mood better? Maybe just Chance encounter is more universal there?

Nice one Ian,

Loved the lift at around the minute mark, very peaceful song would work FANTASTIC behind so many TV/Film scenes. I can see myself watching one with my wife and saying "Pretty song, nice piano"
I do that kinda stuff alot, she does too. smile

All the best
Mike

Thanks!

Thanks very much guys. Sorry for taking so long to respond.

Magne- I like your title. I'll probably use it if and when I submit the tune!

Calvin, Scott and Dottie - Thanks very much guys for the props and good thoughts. I appreciate you checking out the tune!

Nelson - I totally agree this could use strings. I'm thinking about doing an alt version.

Jim - I'm not so sure on the tempo. Sometimes if you step it up it doesn't breathe. Just FYI, I did play around with the tempo after I recorded it and, as I remember, I bumped it up a couple of metronome ticks, but just a couple. It IS a pretty slow piece. That's a bit of the bane of my existence I'm afraid. I do too many slow/medium pieces.

Mike - Do you mind if I put your quote on my soundclick page? That's a terribly nice thing to say. Both you and JLS said really nice things about this tune. It seems to be pretty strong I guess. BTW, I've listened to your album probably 20 times. It's REALLY strong. I hope it goes somewhere.

Peace,

Ian

Superb tickling of those ivories, one can almost hear the reflections of your thoughts in each note. No lyrics??.. would love to have a go at this...but then it might just be meant by it's creator to be an instrumental....~~~Nicely done~~~MFB III

Hey Ian...

I have always admired your skills..I studied keyboards for many years but the piano for only four.
I was honored to be accepted by an exceptional teacher who is very well known here in Portland and he taught me things that a piano could do that were so expressive and techniques that were so amazing it made my head spin.
I told him I wanted to compose for film/tv and he said fine.
He asked me if I could act and I said no I wouldn't have a clue..He begged to differ...
He said an actor has many ways to put forth a performance worth remembering...intonation, facial expressions, physical gestures, and more.A pianist has to gel those emotions through the physical touch of the keys...I was so caught up in the written versions of how to play music that I forgot about how soulful one could be if you felt what the composer might have felt when they wrote the piece. When you have the film in front of you and you are scoring the track it makes the effort much easier than what your personal feelings might suggest...not that they are wrong but you will have different emotions with a visual cue than that which just comes off the head.. Neither are wrong or right but if you are writing for an audience you need to see what they see to create a perfect mood for the film...I hope this make sense to you. To your composition (and this is just a matter of personal taste) it is somewhat bright and it would be cool to hear a little more bottom end.
Larry

Ian, It's such a beautiful piece that if you place it in the right libraries it will turn into some mailbox money at some point for you...I know there are several who have done quite well with library placements over time...I think which library is just as important as which publisher for the film and tv markets...I have only minimal success with the ones I have placed things in...probably the music's fault...ha...Michael Borges may have some words of wisdom, and of course John... Well done...take care...moker

You've certainly put truth to the saying "Music is what feelings sound like." Very nice work. At first, I was leaning toward a shorter title ("Chance Encounter"), but it may work better for libraries with your full title. I don't know that market. Somebody here could probably give you as better assessment.
