I have a pair of ath-m50's headphones and some Altec Lansing computer desktop speakers with a subwoofer (yea, they are cheapie PC speakers) -- but I am looking at getting a pair of the M-Auduio BX5a's for $149. I see a few threads about them and everyone seems to think they are pretty decent (with a lot of people calling them crap, too!).

Any ideas/comments? I am not sure how to hook them up to my tascam us-224, though. The Tascam has a a) digital out that looks like a single RCA female or b) a analog RCA stereo female out. The BX5a each have a TRS 1/4" (or XLR in).

Would I use an RCA (single for the digital) that Y's out to 2 unbalanced TRS's 1/4" (one cable that Y's)?
Or do I use a single RCA to TRS adapter from the tascam analog out (L & R) into the BXA5's (two cables)?

Thanks,

Kevin

Looking at the back of these speakers of which are making me dizzy, it appears there are either XLR or phone jack inputs. And since they are self powered you don't need a seperate amp to power them. If you have a seperate amp that you use such as a receiver and a CD player, if you burn CD's you might want to get a pair of non powered speakers to listen thru that way. Not sure if you can get a stereo cable to connect the speakers from whatever you are using to play from. I have a stand alone CD Recorder that I make CD's with but play them thru a regular CD player/stereo system.

Speaker design is still limited to the pysicial world no matter what the Ad's say. While the word Monitor sounds great most any speaker the same size and weight will give about the same results. If you buy these speakers you will need a cable to hook them up.

That is what you do. The BX5a is a self-powered speaker with an analog audio input.
Where I work, we have a lot of them for monitoring audio in video editing rooms. They're not bad for the money.
I will warn you that we've had quite a few of them fail after a few months of being constantly "on", so if you get them I recommend turning them off when not in use.

Ray: Thanks for the look-see!

Patrick: Yea, I should have picked up on that analog part!!! Two 'single RCA to 1/4" TRS' cables seems quite logical. Thanks for the tip -- and the warning. The 2-year warranty seems cheap. This will be one of the few times I might get the extended warranty. Thanks.

I probably won't order until tonight, so if anyone else wants to chime in -- go ahead!

I've got them last thursday and they are a definite improvement over what I had. They might be a little light in the bass, but the BX8's would have been too big (maybe) for my workspace.

Right now I have created a Sonar file called "reference tracks" and it is loaded with about 30 songs from the likes of Jimmy Buffet, Ricky Skaggs & Bruce Hornsby, Tracy Chapman, Natalie Merchant, jj cale, Reba McEntire, Nelly Furtado, Shawn Colvin, joni mitchell and the Counting Crows.

I plan to listen to those tunes incessantly for the next few days so I get a feel for how songs I like sound on these speakers.

Well, FAWM starts Wednesday -- so who knows how long that plan will last!
